i remember years ago when I WAS christian, my church did the weekly "donations to repair the roof" pass around. After the service, I spoke with the father and said to him "Father, I'm a roofer. I can repair it for you. Free of charge." He refused to let me do it, instead insisting i donate more to pay for the repair. Few months of donations, roof still wasnt repaired. I started doing the mental math every sunday when the plate came to me, adding it all up and by the eighth time, I spoke to him again and told him "Father, we've donated more than enough to repair the roof. I've even offered several times to o it for free and at half price, in service of The Lord. I hate to sound accusatory in the House of God but i'm starting to question YOUR intentions with this "charity" plate every week. He advised me to not return until I apologized to him, and our Lord. Shattered my trust in him. Spoke recently to a friend who still goes, they are still asking for donations to the charity to repair the roof.

"That is deemed worthless by the state" was pretty funky to me. Like, he's blaming God as his motive, but he knows enough about the law to know how far to go. That being said, reminds me of prosperity gospel like Kenneth Copeland who made his congregation fund his private jet and literally gaslit a news reporter on camera over a very easy quote that he doesn’t want to get into "a long tube with a bunch of demons".
