Didn't Another World do a similar story in the early 80's where Alma Rudder would dress as a giant Raggedy Ann doll and hide in the closet to terrorize Blaine and make fer think she was crazy.

VistaTiger, I realize it's a year after you asked, but I can confirm you are correct about Blaine being terrified by Alma Rudder dressed as the Raggedy Ann creature. (Chase)

Lois Kibbee was on Somerset? I don't remember that. I remember Heather and Jerry Kane and all that drama.

I had heard rumors that organ music was used as late as the 70's, but the Internet has once again provided proof of this horrid production "value" (more like de-value!). I guess "The Doctors" was way ahead of it's time after all with a proper musical theme.

What's so horrid about organ music? It serves its purpose. Plus it's more economical.
@Historian2124 жыл бұрын
The organ music was a leftover from an earlier era, before TV. Soaps started on radio in the 1930s, not sure if they already used the organ on the earliest ones. Since many of the housewives of the 70s were still from the Depression/WW2 era, that organ music would've been familiar to them, and probably comforting. A reminder of their younger days.

Dark Shadows didn't use organ music. The main theme was played on a theremin

I always liked that Another World didn't use music heavily back in the 70's over the scenes. I always heard their writer Harding Lemay didn't like it. Another World was like watching a play back then. Brilliant story line's and dialogue that was like real life conversation.

Who writen this episode, Henry Slesar, or Roy Winsor.

Kenneth Washington Henry Slesar was writing for the show. He jumped on board in 1971, possibly in part because Lois Kibbee was on the show and she was also an associate writer on "Edge of Night."

Actually, Mr. Slesar became head writer at the request of P&G, the production company that owned both "Somerset" and "The Edge of Night," which Mr. Slesar was simultaneously writing. P&G wanted another mystery serial in the vein of "Edge" and who better to transform "Somerset", a traditional soap, into a mystery serial than Mr. Slesar, a celebrated mystery novelist and teleplay writer for "Alfred Hitchcock Presents"? Unfortunately "Somerset" as a serial never really caught on, probably because of intense competition from already establish serials on CBS and ABC. As for these scenes, they're beautifully written and acted... IMHO.

Kibbee was on Somerset because of Slesar not the other way around. He wrote her part on Somerset after he wrote her Geraldine Whitney character off Edge in 1971. She didn’t become a soap writer until much later.

okay so now I remember now that Somerset was a spin off of another world in which case Sam and Lohomea was on both shows. I rememeber they attended the marriage of Lenour and Walter in bay city. I believe it was shortly after that when Sam had married Lohomea after breaking up with Lee Randolf John's daughter. i remember Lohomea's sexy voice . i got hooked from watchin g in a spare moment when Sam had bludgeoned Lohomea with a paper weight . not sure if he killed her or not but it was the firsr time I had witness violence on a soap opera. must of been in the early seventies. i was about 9 years old. I felt so bad for what he did to his wife who was also nagging him quite often. Does anyone remember that storyline?? I also remember some of the gingle's killer clown storyline that was quite frightening to me at that age.

"So what do you do for a living?" I'm the organist on Somerset. The soap opera." "Oh--really?" "Yeah, I play to transition between scenes, and just before commercial breaks. Sometimes in the middle of a commercial break, to remind people the show's coming back soon. The opening music, the end music. Sometimes when something really dramatic happens, like a woman getting gaslighted by a guy dressed as a scary clown to drive her mad. That requires more creativity. Pay's not much, but workload's light. I moonlight at a local church, and there's always the ice skating rink." "It doesn't sound like a very secure job." "Oh nonsense! Soap organists go back to the early days of radio! It's an enduring tradition that will last for generations. What are they going to do, record some canned synth music, and play it over and over? Where's the artistry in that?"
