This would be a great format. On the other hand, you could open some nasty cans of worms - I remember some discussions on some forums about real/fake/franken watches, and they weren't something for the faint-hearted. Still, worth the risk in my opinion.

Very good point Luca. I remember years ago, on a watchuseek thread, everyone piling in on an Omega dresswatch from the early 50's to say it was a frankenwatch. On another thread much later, incontroversial evidence popped up to show that variation WAS produced by Omega! I can imagine the poor sap trying to sell it one day as prospective buyers keep turning up the negative first thread. Meanwhile those who trashed it have forgotten all about it and moved on to other things. Ouch!

@@michaelbedford8017 Typical... It often involves pride, emotions, sometimes a lot of money, and arrogance from trash talking people, a recipe for disaster. But I believe in Tim's hands it's gonna be fine. You mentionned Omega. Quite frankly, I witnessed the worst behaviors on watch forums, on the Omega sections/forums, from the so called Omega nerds. They trash talk people who got genuine watches but are versions they don't value, let alone a potential fake one. They're absolutely at the opposite of the image of the luxury watch for more laid back people than Rolex fans. It's actually the other way around, from my experience.
@michaelbedford8017
@michaelbedford8017 3 жыл бұрын
@@H0kram I don't want to be negative about this proposal, but it could turn sour. On calibres I normally consult Roland Ranfft's pink pages but even he doesn't have examples of every variation of every calibre When I buy a vintage watch it can be well over 12 hours of searching before I can satisfy myself that it is entirely genuine. I don't mind doing that as it's the best way to learn, but making a sort puzzle out of it can be risky. Also when you're doing it for yourself you have the watch and your tools next to you. I'd hesitate to do it based on photos, no matter how good the quality.

Great idea for a series of video’s. My impression is the dial has been repainted and the hands are likely not original. The case may be legitimate.

Looks all original but has re-finished dial & hands. LeCoultre Cases were mostly made in the USA & are often different to Jaeger LeCoultre's. The printing & marker lay-out on the alarm disc is correct. Crowns look original as does the movement, also the "timed in the USA" marking on the Caseback is correct for a LeCoultre.

None of the vintage memovoxes have an applied marker at the twelve o’clock. Plus those baton hands are all wrong. But that case is weird, because getting the dual crowns to fit into an alien case is nigh on impossible. Yet I can’t google a memovox case with those lugs. Odd... I’m guessing more of a home made mod than some evil frankenwatch. Movement is original...

I really like the idea for the reasons you stated. As for this watch I’d want to know the price paid and more about the seller & advert but of more interest to me now is when the owner began to doubt it. Whether that was before or after it’s service leads to too many questions to list here! Btw crooked is pronounced crukid with two syllables. I wouldn’t normally interfere like an unelected English usage police but I remember you saying one reason you began this channel was to improve your English. The rule is complicated unfortunately and not all words are treated the same way, for example the past tense of book as in booking a concert ticket is booked but pronounced bukt using just one syllable. Lol I’m beginning to regret getting into this now 😆😆
@michaelbedford8017
@michaelbedford8017 3 жыл бұрын
Oh Lordy! What a bastard language English is: Verb, 'Crooked', pronounced 'crookt' as in 'I crooked my finger round the trigger'. Even native speakers get into a mucked sweat when asked to lay down the law on this kind of stuff, as I know from bitter experience.

This sounds like a good idea but maybe we could have multi part videos where you present the details of the watch(preferrably physically present in the studio) with hogh res photos and viewers give info followed by a conclusions video to keep it interactive. Like others have said youll have to watch it in case things turn toxic or something in the comments. I'd hate caseback to become another "positivity" channel. I am starting to hate that word for various reasons. I'd also suggest you consult your lawyer and draw up a disclaimer for any such segment... an example for instance of potential problems could be that someone tries to use a video which concludes that a watch is fake or redone to get the money back or sue some dealer etc etc and you end up being sent some notice... any well drafted disclaimer could easily get around that.

The watch looks a mix of original and Poljot parts but it is most likely a badly restored original. Iam sure that all the nice boxes and paperwork are just fake. From my 40 years watch collecting experience most watches coming with this kind of original docs. and boxes look like new and will cost some 3 - 5 grand.

Why would anyone go to all that trouble to sell a watch for $200. I have seen a very similar JLC Mvx from the sixties where the logo did move around the dial. Of course, that may also have been a dodgy piece.
@shaharyarsheikh5291
@shaharyarsheikh5291 3 жыл бұрын
the franken and repainted watches come from different places after being sild at flea market rates due to a messed up dial etc and bought by a seller whondoesnt know much about vintage watches or the seller or watchmaker may have had them "redone" themsleves for that reason. This jappens a lot in Asia because ypu have a large pool of people who can do this cheaply as well as a lot of vintage watches swiss watches going around in good condition or ok condition without a proper market for vintage watches . People would prefer to have a fixed up poloshed watch that has that brand name on the dial than a watch that looks vintage.

That waranty card looks like it comes direct out of a printer. This dial looks indeed a bit strange, way to modern. JLC is a somwhat conservative manufacturer. I don't think they made such a modern Design in the 60s. I think we have a to some point restored watch and the "restorer" adapted a bit of his own phantasy. I restore old phones and my son tube radios. We find often things from the 50s or older which were restored in the 70s to look more modern. It seems to be a 70s thing to do so.
