On this episode: What really happened behind the scenes at WrestleMania VII? What was the backstory on the retirement match between "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. the Ultimate Warrior? What was up with the LA Coliseum move? WWF's heel turn of Sgt. Slaughter. Oh and Donald Trump ringside??
Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of former WWE executive Bruce Prichard co-hosted by Conrad Thompson.
The show was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes typically range from 2 hours to 4 hours in length, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers.

I've always thought that it was a shame that they killed earthquake's main event push at Summerslam 90. I can't help but think that they could have filled LA Memorial Coliseum if they'd gone the route of putting the title on earthquake (via chicanery) by having him beat Warrior at the rumble then have him pretty soundly defeat Hogan in a non title match on SNME and have Warrior come in to make the save (which would bring in savage as a heel) thus setting up a fatal four way match for the title at mania (fifteen years before they started doing them).
@cretinousjester3475

Hammerhead: I think Earthquake in a way.....threatened Hogan, Warrior and to a degree McMahon. Not like physically threatened them but threatened "the vision" that McMahon had for the WWF. In McMahon's eyes, "big" guys that don't look like Greek gods are monster heels for the face of the company to beat. Earthquake started getting over with fans. He was a monster heel like King Kong Bundy or One Man Gang but unlike them- he started getting over. Something about Earthquake just stuck with the fans and I don't think Vince liked it.

For what America was going through Wrestlemania 7 was a success. This was obviously the hardest mania to date if Bruce is having to argue with Conrad his points and trying to defend what happened. On the True Story of Wrestlemania DVD we were told the reason for the move was the lack of sales. I believe this is the first time that it was mention that the war had affected everything. Very spooky and crazy timing that Ultimate Warrior was losing the World Wrestling Federation Championship when the war was starting. You just dont see crazy shit like that happen.

The LOD vs Power & Glory match is one minute because they were both injured, according to Roma. Paul had fluid drained from his arm and you can see a large pad on the elbow. Hercules had a groin tear and you can see him wince in pain and reach down there a couple times during the match. But the funny part was Paul telling the story of Vince McMahon pleading with them to even have a match in the first place. Give me five minutes, just five minutes. Sorry Vince, can't do it. Ok four minutes you can do four minutes. Vince, the doctor says I could lose the arm. And big man is barely mobile. Three minutes, just give me three minutes!! Vince, we can't do it. Just give me one minute. You can give me one minute!!

Man, I totally understand the heat Sarge would have had but it's surprising to hear all about all the sensitivity around the war at the time. I was just a snot nose 10 year old at the time. I do remember my mom crying when the attack started and there were always a handful of protestors in Omaha's busiest intersection but overall it seemed so little. It was all about wearing a yellow ribbon and having a troop pen pal in school. Other than that it felt like an after thought and it seemed like it was over before it began. Just my ignorance showing.

We about the same age. I remember it similar; they had like trading cards and the nightly report about the war, it was almost like just part of the show to our age. We were too young to notice unless it affected you directly, otherwise we didn't know how serious it was. My friend's kids are the same with 9/11, it was just something that happened they kind of remember. They were 11 and 9 so they didn't even realize that normally didn't happen at the time.

Now...time for a long story so bear with me. I was at WrestleMania 7. And it was a seating mess. Let me start at the beginning. Right after WrestleMania 6. I was super excited after watching warrior vs Hogan. The LA Coliseum was in my back yard so I bought tickets the next day. My thinking was in order to fill the Coliseum it would have to be warrior vs Hogan II. So all year I waited... I was for sure it would be Hogan vs warrior. Around January warrior losses the title. I was like wtf? So no warrior Hogan 2? What match are they going to have that will bring 100,000 people? When they announced Hogan vs slaughter I was like oh hell no. Around February I got a letter from the LA Coliseum saying that there was a venue change to the sports arena. And that I would have to go to the ticket office to exchange my ticket. Now my original seats in the Coliseum we're ok. I spent about $50 to sit on the middle across from the hard cam. But on the day of the event I was seated in the nosebleeds in the sports arena. So I went to guest service. There was a huge line of people there for the same thing. Seating transitions. People were pissed. The lady at guest service basically gave the same answer to everyone. "We tried to transition from where you would be in the Coliseum to where you are on the sports arena. We won't change seating go f yourselve" But alot of people had the same argument as me. Where I'm sitting now is the $8 section. I paid $50-$75 for my tickets. How does that translate as being the same? But the guest service lady said sorry seating is already set. We can't make any changes. So I waited a year for a Hogan warrior 2 that I didn't get. And a negative experience at my first WrestleMania. Thank you for listening to my story.

Chris Terry Well. In General I thought that the crowd was pretty laid-back. It wasn't the WrestleMania 3 type of crowd that I was expecting. Everyone was pretty quiet with isolated areas of screaming. However the loudest match that everyone was into was Hogan vs slaughter.. When Hogan came out and real American came on....it was the loudest thing I have ever heard. I can't describe it. you know how when Jesse and gorilla used to say that you can't hear yourself think or you can't hear yourself. It was true. I had never heard. Anything so loud. But the crowd was really into the match chanting USA USA. It was alot of fun. Also I rember the crowd doing the wave before the Tito Santana vs mountie match. I wish wwe would have shown the whole thing. It was really cool. But you can kinda see the fans doing it before it ended on the ppv or network. Right during introductions. Also the crowd was really loud at the beginning of WrestleMania because Howard finkle told the crowd that we are going on the air in 10 seconds and to scream really loud. You would think people would really be into warrior vs Savage. But for the most part everyone was rather quiet. With episodes of screaming. I mean people were watching and interested. But not like the Hogan match. I remember when Elizabeth got in the match. If you were not in the front row or closer you had no idea who it was. All I saw was a woman jump the railings and get involved in the match. She had chopped her hair and didn't look the same since we saw her last. So it was like.. who's that? Then at the end we knew who it was. The funny part was except for the the 4 people caught on camera that were crying in the front row. No one else was really crying.

@@HereIsWisdom1318 because..... 1) It's sports entertainment. So they don't always stick to a certain ruling. It could have been over turned. There have been flip flops on decisions or rulings before. 2) The statement Jack Tunny made did not sense. "Due to the chance of serious injury there will be no rematch?" Waaa😕 what serious injury? Just didn't make sense. I figured that because they are talking about it means, that their will be a rematch. They just want to hold off to wm7 so they can fill the Colosseum. 3) Hogan and Warrior 2 was the logical match to put in the coliseum. To fill 100,000 seats. I can't think of any match at the time that would have come close to selling out. 4) From wm6 to wm7 the WWE would drop hints. All through the year. Hogan would drop hints that he wanted his belt back etc. Hogan even said at SummerSlam 90 that he wanted to beat earthquake so he could become the #1 contender.

Howie Heres why there was no re-match: I didnt hear anyone say this. This is my assumption: Hogan didnt mind doing the job for Warrior cuz he was going to go do movies and he needed a break. But i bet Warrior said he would never job to Hogan, and fearing that Warrior would just leave as champion (VKM didnt know Warrior would fail as champion), they satisfied Warrior by announcing there would be no rematch. That is the most likely reason they squashed a rematch from the very start.

Warrior was a one dimensional character. Maybe they could have done something different with him but they didn't. Everyone else wasn't on the same level. Keep in mind that WWF was struggling a few years later with Bret and Shawn as champions. Slaughter had been hot 5 years earlier. He and his angle didn't draw at this time. Beyond all this the economy was bad in the early 90's, people always forget this. It was very good in the second half of the decade but the first half stunk. The main event could've been great and maybe they still can't sell it.

Conrad really kills this with his attitude sometimes. One moment I'll be really into what they're talking about, and then he starts acting like a smart ass or has some sarcastic comment, and it just annoys me. Still watch the show for Bruce, though, and to hear him talk about wrestling.

The story I read about Dino Bravo, he was executed basically because he "retired" from wrestling, and was no longer able to smuggle cigarettes supposedly and he was apparently killed over it...he must've owed money to bad people and the cigarettes thing was prolly a way to pay it back, so when it ended, they ended him...that's not the glamorous life that it appears to be in the movies.

Wether people want to admit it or not: Brett and Shaun were great talents, as tags or as intercontinental level talents, as part of the show, they could have main event level matches I won’t ever deny that, however they just weren’t ever the guy that could carry the company, were not even close to what hulk was, what the rock, Brock, or stone cold became, as good as they were they just wasn’t the big larger than life monsters we need to believe could beat anyone.

Modern wrestling could use a Jake the Snake + his level of commitment too. Tbh the only other blindfold matches I've seen were booked by Dusty and were a far cry from the one mentioned here. Its status in history is due to Jake and Martel making it unique, because the other blindfold matches just don't carry the same water, even the gimmicky ones with more than 2 iconic wrestlers in the ring.
