Son Shoots Dad With Bow and Arrow in Freak Accident

A man was in need of help after he got shot with an arrow. Jeremy Clingenpeel and his son Colton were shooting targets with a bow at home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, when something went wrong according to Jeremy’s wife, Tracy. She says the bow malfunctioned and sent the arrow off course. It struck Jeremy through the left side of his body. Tracy is a nurse and when she saw her husband’s condition she knew it was serious. Life can literally change in the blink of an eye. I spent the afternoon at Subway today, and I just learned that there was a fatal head-on collision on the highway in front of that Subway approximately three minutes after I left. Had I simply used the restroom before leaving, that would have timed me to be involved in the accident. 💔 The male driver died, but the female driver in the other vehicle (my son’s third grade teacher) survived uninjured. Live every moment and tell your family you love them.

Dude I’ve had several (well not trying to exaggerate 2 times maybe 3 really) near death experiences. They always shook me and made me wonder if I just got lucky or if guardian angels actually exists. I was in a car crash off a cliff, thats the one that sticks in my mind. Edit: I should mention the other 2, id be curious too. I nearly drowned in the ocean at about 4. And a car tried to run me over, i did nothing to warrant that fyi. In fact i did nothing at all.

As a long time archer... I can't imagine the horror they both experienced. Sometimes a nock will split or simply just not get seated onto bow string,and a massive amount of energy launches an arrow into doing something odd. From what they said, it implies that the father was close enough behind the target to get hit. If that is the case that’s very unsafe. I wish they went into more of an explanation of how the arrow could do that. You never fire towards a person even if you’re aiming at a target. That’s archery 101... I hope the son mentally heals and the father physically heal. I also hope the son learned a valuable lesson about archery/firearm safety here.

I shoot archery and I have no idea how that happens. Did the arrow's nock slip off the string? Did the arrow come off the drop away? I've seen multiple bows explode and arrows explode but never seen an arrow get shot parallel.

Wow. I really feel for this family. It sounds like they have had a lot of misfortune in the past couple of years with her illness and financial burden and now things just got even harder. I really hope things get better for all of them. Can someone that knows more about bows and arrows explain to me how he could have been aiming at a target and this could have happened? I would assume dad was standing next to or behind him, I see no reason to stand in front of him unless he was off to the side too and really thought he was out of danger.

The arrow struck the bow upon release and in doing so became a sideways projectile. Possible malfunction or mishandling of the weapon can cause this. You're correct here - essentially the father would have been standing to the side of his son, or the side and a bit to the front, possibly just trying to watch or take a photo. I think sometimes folks get comfy doing things and will forget basic safety because something like this hasn't happened to them. Hopefully they'll get help from the community to endure through this.
