Nascida em 1983 em Londres de um pai gambiano e mãe inglesa, Sona Jobarteh é a primeira mulher virtuosa Kora a vir de uma família Griot da África Ocidental. Rompendo com a tradição, ela é pioneira em uma antiga tradição hereditária dominada por homens que foi transmitida exclusivamente de pai para filho pelos últimos sete séculos. Sona é reconhecida por sua habilidade como instrumentista, voz distinta, melodias contagiantes e sua graça no palco.
A Kora (uma harpa africana de 21 cordas) é um dos mais importantes instrumentos pertencentes aos povos Manding da África Ocidental (Gâmbia, Senegal, Mali, Guiné e Guiné-Bissau). Pertence exclusivamente a famílias griot (famílias musicais hereditárias), e somente aqueles que nascem em uma dessas famílias têm o direito de adotar o instrumento profissionalmente. Sona, que nasceu em uma das cinco principais famílias Griot, tornou-se a primeira mulher a adotar este instrumento profissionalmente em uma tradição masculina que remonta a mais de sete séculos.
A família de Sona tem uma grande reputação pelos renomados mestres Kora, especialmente seu avô Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, que era um ícone na história cultural e musical de Gâmbia, e seu primo Toumani Diabaté, famoso por seu domínio do Kora.
Sona e sua música têm a capacidade única de tocar o público de todas as origens e culturas.

The Kora (a 21-stringed African harp) is one of the most important instruments belonging to the Manding peoples of West Africa (Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau). It belongs exclusively to griot families (hereditary musical families), and only those who are born into one of these families have the right to take up the instrument professionally. Sona, who was born into one of the five principal Griot families, has become the first female to take up this instrument professionally in a male tradition that dates back over seven centuries.
Sona's family carries a heavy reputation for renowned Kora masters, notably her grandfather Amadu Bansang Jobarteh who was an icon in Gambia’s cultural and musical history, and her cousin Toumani Diabaté who is renowned for his mastery of the Kora.
Sona and her music has the unique ability to touch audiences from all backgrounds and cultures.
