SONGO
The creation of SONGO, from the drum set perspective, is attributed to José Luis Quintana "Changuito", although the same "Changuito" recognize that Blas Egües (first drummer and timbale player of Los Van Van) had an important and fundamental role in it's creation.
In my humble opinion, "Changuito" is the Elvin Jones of Cuban percussion. To better understand what that means, here is what legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter stated in the 1979 video documentary Different Drummer:
“The only way to illustrate or accurately define Elvin’s contribution is to play a recording of a pre-Elvin Jones drummer, play a recording of Elvin Jones, and then play a recording of a post-Elvin Jones drummer. I think these three examples would best illustrate all of Elvin’s contributions to the drums better than words could ever say.”

"Changuito has done more to influence the Latin percussion world and the role of the timbales and drum set in the world than nearly any other artist in the last century.”
