I think Ariana could have done a pretty close copy of celine's version, but then there wouldn't be a point ti have her sing it. They wanted a new approach to the song, but i don't think it worked very well

Ariana has a gorgeous voice but I think the upped tempo made the song feel commercial and soulless compared to the original. The original has some tension and sense of longing that is lost in the new version

commercial and soulless is a good description. it sounds like what it is, a cover version for a recent remake of the movie. vocal talent isn't the same as being able to infuse emotion into the song. an imperfect rendering with emotion is better than a technically gifted but emotionally stunted version.

I hate that any music "modernized" means a soulless and commercialized rendition. They think its "so much better" because its technically "perfect" with so much unnecessary vocal gymnastics and runs all over the place that actually ruin it, ect, yet zero emotion or feeling. Like chill. Theres a reason the originals are timeless classics. A lot of the time "simpler" is better. Even the difference in visuals, the original was better

I had the cassette of this as a kid. I would fall asleep to this soundtrack and the Lion King. To me the originals are the benchmark but I can appreciate the new interpretations. But Celine is the queen of DRAMA emotions. Have you heard her make Baby Shark dramatic? Its magic. Nothing against the new one but come on. Now the true owner of this song is Angela Landsbery. I grew up when the animated movie came out so, of course, I am going to prefer that version. I actually have a wonderful memory of going to see it at the movie theater with my mom. It just feels more emotional to me than the version by Ariana and John. And, of course, Angela's version is also a personal favorite. To each their own. At the end of the day, they're all beautiful versions of the same wonderful song.
