EDIT: I've now set up a live stream for volume 2 of this game and will be using real hardware. Don't miss it (27th Feb 2021) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYSvYnifYseSiJI Before edit: So, I was not aware there was a "Vol. 2" of this. Well, I downloaded the file from romhacking.net but I don't understand what I'm meant to be doing. There's patches for Somari and Family Kid and then extras has lots of different patches but I see no vol2 patch. The readme is very vague. EDIT: Never mind, I had to download a different patcher and use a xdelta file instead.

In the original Somari, you need to have at least 100 rings to enter the Bonus Stage. It also used the music from the official 8-bit game.

Yeah, most of the faults that come with this hack are the fault of Hummer Team's original work, like the endless onslaught of enemies, but I do appreciate the efforts of multiple people to attempt to make this bootleg somewhat more enjoyable.

The issues on the edges are due to a hardware limitation. The FC/NES only has enough memory for two screens of tiles, and they have to be either one above the other or one beside the other, no rearranging tiles to get a slightly bigger than the screen rectangle. It actually happens on both sides of SMB3, too, except that takes advantage of a hardware feature to hide the left edge of the screen entirely. Most if not all of this woulda been in the overscan anyway, so it was a sensible enough choice I guess.
@luisjogos8212 жыл бұрын
This also happens in Megaman 6.
@lucianothewindowsfan2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, the palette table is for 16x16 pixels (2x2 tiles) each, which made it a nightmare to fix.
@xtokumaru Жыл бұрын
The fact that the game is blanking a bunch of scanlines at the bottom of the screen means that they could have gone with the "side by side" screen layout (i.e. vertical mirroring) instead and hidden the attribute glitches behind those blank scanlines. Unfortunately, the original developers didn't do that, and hacking the scrolling engine would probably be way too much work.

There are many ways to implement clean 8-way scrolling on the NES (Jurassic Park and Felix the Cat are good examples of two different techniques), but apparently Hummer Team did not care about that.

I honestly think graphically this is really impressive. I love the way the SMS games look, but the graphics here are arguably better, some of the stages look like near perfect 8-bit renditions of the Mega Drive stages, whereas the SMS levels had to go for a very different look for most of the game. This is clearly not a great port, but graphically I like it. Especially the stages after Green Hill. I’d love to see some rom hackers change the level layouts to be less horrible with less badniks someday, maybe even improving the physics.

When I sent them for RGB modding, they all came back but every console jittered. I then sent them all to be dejittered but they all came back still jittering. Turns out it was a firmware issue on the RGB boards. Sent them all off again to be flashed but at this point, the modder received the NA NES dead on arrival. I guess damaged in post. They all came back and all consoles now worked and no longer jittered except for the NA NES which was dead. I then had to send it back for rework and managed to get it working again on composite only. Then after that, back to oldskool for another RGB board but it wouldn't work well and after months, it came back with RGB but jittering. Then back to Duncan for dejittering but no effect. The console itself cost a lot as I had to import it, then went back and forth for several mods and in the end, it just doesn't work except for my BVM.
