Along with Sega of Japan&America at odds.. Genesis wasnt a huge success there as it was in USA, SOJ had the Saturn out quickly, an here in Usa we got the 32X The writing was on the wall considering how they abandoned the Sega Cd as well Nintendo leaving Sony at the altar for Phillips, created their biggest rival Sony even tried to work with Sega an were shunned as well That said 9/9/99 last time I ever bought a launch system, zero regrets Still the best launch lineup of games ever Sonic Adventure SoullllCaliburrrr Nfl 2k HOD2, Crazy Taxi, Blue Stinger, Expendables (best Contra clone) Zombie Revenge vmu useage!
@Arthur-uu3px3 ай бұрын
I think that an even bigger factor was Sega releasing the Sega CD and the 32X, two add-ons for the Genesis/ Mega Drive that in hindsight should have never existed in the first place. Sega should have unified their Western and Eastern sides (something that they were notorious for not being able to do back in the day), and put all of their support behind the Saturn in all regions. I think that would probably have had better results for them instead of trying desperately to extend the lifespan of the Genesis. The Sega CD in particular was almost prohibitively expensive as an add-on since it cost $300.00 in 1991. I strongly believe that the Saturn was a great console that never got the chance that it deserved to thrive in Western markets due to Sega's incompetence at that time.

Before the Dreamcast came out, my local Electronics Boutique had a demo of Sonic Adventure running on a tiny monitor in the middle of the store. I took control and played for an hour straight without interruption. I went back each week for a month straight and played. I thought about it every minute of every day, reading all the media I could, pouring over screenshots and reading all the information. That Christmas I got a Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure and I was ecstatic. I didn't get a VMU, so I played the game start to finish a few times until I could finally get a VMU. When I found the Chao garden and the little mini game to take Chao on an adventure, I brought it to school with me and checked on it throughout the day. I love my memories with the Dreamcast.

I can't even begin to explain how massive of an impact Sonic Adventure has had on my life. There was a Dreamcast demo disc I have from forever ago, and on it was a demo of Sonic Adventure. Emerald Coast was the one and only level for the demo, and I think that's probably the level I connect with the most across all gaming I've ever done. Everything from the visuals to the music to the amazing movement of Sonic in SA1 just feels perfect to me and evokes such a deep emotional feeling that makes me never want to leave that place. I'm still there mentally to this day and every time I get to go into any beachy environment, I hear the Emerald Coast music in my head and I think it's solidified my preference in environments forever. I dont think any game will ever top SA1 for me just from the pure love I have for the game, and the same goes for a lot of Dreamcast games. They all felt like they were somehow connected and had similar vibes even though they were super wacky and very imaginative and different, and in some instances, they did connect with various references and Easter eggs across tons of other Sega games. Gave me a super good nostalgia rush with this one, thank you.

The anticipation of the Dreamcast was very well received from our peers back in 1999. It felt exciting as the last months of the century were coming to a close and Sega's attempt to repair their relationship with the U.S and Europe markets. Yet, I somehow never got the URGE to buy one in complete box simply because the retro-community had begun to overprice those games in the mid 2000s and like the Gamecube, I lost my desire to collect its gaming library. Even as a Saturn and Genesis owner, Sega lost its relevancy due to the Saturn's poor sale performance and lack of exposure during the 32-bit era. By the time the dreamcast came around, the n64 and playstation were the dominant players in the console race...and the PS2 was released a year later. The writing was on the wall. How lucky we had it as kids, didn't we? Here's to the greatest childhood of our lives. 🍻🥂

The Dreamcast was when Sega finally got everything right: - console with arcade hardware powering it (perfect arcade ports) -4 controller ports (no need to buy a multitap) -the modem was included in the base purchase (they finally learned that selling certain add-ons separately splinters the userbase) -big lineup of games at launch (there have been plenty of consoles before and since with little to choose from at launch) -competitively priced $199 USD, the Saturn was $399 and the PSX/PS1was $299 before it. -Sonic title at (US)launch (Saturn did not have a main Sonic title). It should have lasted officially more than it did. Unofficially people are still making games for it.

I feel like Sega should release a Sega Dreamcast Mini in the future. The Sega Genesis Mini has some success. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 was limited in that it was only available on Amazon. The Sega Dreamcast had a great library of games for such a short system life. I remember playing Sonic Adventure at store demos. It was a great game.

I’m still mentally praying that Sega do release a Mini Dreamcast in the future. They did release Sega CD games with last year’s Genesis Mini 2, so we’ll see and hopefully! 🙏

Love all sorts of gaming but at that time i was mainly PC gaming, the Dreamcast was a console that definitely had my attention and made me want to have a console again as well, specially Sonic adventure had a big pull on me.

Sega was broke and doomed before the Dreamcast even launched. It was sad they wasted everything they had built leading up to its launch.

the Dreamcast was dope, but needed a stronger lineup and better security so you couldnt just burn an ISO to a GD-ROM
