In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is a 2014 action-adventure game published by Sega and developed by Big Red Button for the Wii U. Rise of Lyric had a very negative reception, and was heavily criticized for its numerous glitches, camera system, controls, combat, story, dialogue, and character development. The game did not perform well commercially, with the Wii U and 3DS Sonic Boom games only selling 620,000 copies as of May 2015.

No arguments there. With CN beginning to lately make a habit of making animations that once again range from passable, okay, or amazing to some degree again there's really no real excuse for stuff like a bad attempt at a parody like TTG--essentially their new Johnny Test--or the PPG reboot that takes too much after 80s cartoons in that it was only made to sell toys; with the toys being made months in advance and entire episodes having to be built around the toys to warrant their existing.

Well that's how video game development works. :/ Some developers have freedom and time and some don't. It costs money and publishers try to save money by giving them a certain window of time to finish the product. BigRedButton needs to create a game on their own and prove they can make really good games.

It isn't the developers' faults. I find that it's mainly Sega's. The problem with Sega, in my opinion, is that they tend to bring up projects that are WAY too big for their developers or that the higher ups tend to make massive changes in the development cycle halfway through due to some offhand decision making. Those points, and Sega's inconsistent emphasis on ideas, are what leads to most of the very bad publicity of their games, I feel.

Bad? or rushed? Also, my thought on these is (as a hobby game dev, and full time software engineer) is that like all projects, software based or otherwise, you never have the time, nor the money to do everything; error handling on extremely rare events, testing on all areas (regression testing) each revision etc. It generally comes down to: 1. will *most* people be able to enjoy and finish the game without having too many issues. OR 2. Can we as a company get away with the product in it's current state?... Both are not developer wants, they are project management and business decisions... Sad, but in my eyes, and over the last 15 years, I'd have to say it's true.

As a programmer I feel very sorry for the developers. Just imagine, you have pitched the game three times and have been rejected, then you are given an extremely taxing engine and very slow hardware... Anyone who is even remotely interested in gamedev probably knows how hard it is in general...

It really angers me how until this fucking video, people were constantly blaming BRB for the mess the Boom turned out to be. Rise of Lyric was NEVER supposed to be on the Wii U in the first place. It was a game that was built specifically for next gen consoles and PC. And because Sega sprung that deal on the game's dev team, they had little to no time to try and make a suitable engine that the Wii U could actually run. I better that if Rise of Lyric had stayed on the next gen consoles like originally intended, it would have been a pretty decent game. It's literally Sonic 06 all over again. Sega rushed Sonic Team to get a Sonic game out for the holidays because they're a bunch of impatient fucks. And now, Sega repeated the same mistake they 8 years prior with rushing BRB to get the game for the holidays. Sega, seriously. Let your fucking dev teams finish your games so we can get a good Sonic again. The last 4 years almost have been nothing but mediocrity. After the 25th anniversary game, Sonic really needs a break. Revitalize the other franchises you have. You have so many people wanting a new NiGHTS game, Crazy Taxi game, etc. So many games that people want a new installment of. You should probably listen to them Sega and give Sonic a break.

Sonic 06 had creative level design potential (Kingdom Valley is gorgeous in concept, Wave Ocean's got a nice sunny atmosphere, Aquatic Base is really pristine, etc.), robust and gorgeous music (That was the only thing without fail), and it at least had enough story content to keep someone busy (three stories+finale gives you enough to get through). The story itself needed work but it was still pretty decent... ish. Also, Shadow was probably at the peak of his character; mature without being a whiny pissbaby and willing to work with others without throwing some huge temper tantrum.

These new character designs are pretty great, to be honest. Some of my favorites yet. They're especially well animated in the TV show.

All of their designs look nice; the anime bandages for no reason are overdone, but at least they still look good. They managed to make the characters actually look different, rather than the same body with a different bobble-head photo-shopped on. That doesn't excuse what they did to Knuckles, though. His redesign is fine, it's the fact that they made his character a stereotypical idiot jock all of a sudden. I don't even care much about the Sonic franchise at all, and yet that still really bothers me.

Both "Ratchet and Clank" and "Jak and Daxter" are wonderful franchises since they knew what they wanted to be. This game was confused since day one. Here's hoping for another Sonic Rush or a game like Generations. (I'd even like another Sonic Adventure as long as it doesn't go full '06 on us.lol)

Here's an idea, Sega: How about you make a Sonic game without absurd expectations of the production team? You're out of ideas. OK. I get that. I'll let you have this one for free: What if Robotnik succeeded in taking over the world? The best part is this is already a thing. Take the world of Sonic from the premise of Archie comics / SatAM and go from there. Maybe make an open world of the roboticized city filled with robots and former mobians slaving for Robotnik. And Sonic goes on secret missions to disrupt Robotnik from destroying the forest and finding other freedom fighters and rescuing captives and discovering info on how his evil inventions work. And possibly restoring Mobotropolis to its former glory, or as close to it as a rag tag group of teenagers can manage.

In a development team, there is the design team, and there is the programming team. During the time the programming team was trying to fit the game in the Wii U, it's up to the design team which isn't hit TOO much by the change of platform to make something great. Well, i don't mean that the design team is totally unnerved by the change of platform, they have to imagine less big place for example, or less enemy at the same time but frankly, that's all. So yeah, it may have been "a bit better" because of much time taking by making test and fixing glitches but the vision they had is still there at the end and.... Well it's really not that great. It's very different from Sonic 2006 where the team was fucked by Sega several times by splitting their team in two for exemple... Now THAT's awful. But yeah, even knowing that Nintendo and Sega can be awful, i don't have any confidence in Big Red Button at all.

I think Sonic Boom does have good ideas and potential, especially the content that had to be cut out due to the troubled development. There were games much like it that were pulled off before, but way better. I personally blame the deal SEGA made with Nintendo.

Despite its plethora of flaws, I still stand by my opinion that 2006's Sonic at least in concept form had potential to actually be a great game. It had interesting ideas, a more serious story with a legitimately intimidating villain, and veteran + new characters working together (Sonic, Shadow, and Silver all going super to fight a god, OMG). The thought of more realistic visuals also sounded cool, especially when I first saw the trailer, though I didn't expect such a Final Fantasy-ish vibe. Regarding Sonic's romance with Elise, while I obviously found it inappropriate like most, of course I didn't think Sega was condoning or encouraging bestiality. Several animal characters even outside games (Roger Rabbit, Beauty & Beast, Greek mythology, etc) have human love interests, it's not something to take personally or flip out over like morality itself is dead. While it definitely failed in most respects, I attribute that mainly to its execution and difficulties during development. We certainly have every right to expect the creators to do their best, but cannot blame them for things beyond their control. In any popular franchise that grows into a multi-media giant, some products will succeed while others fall short. That's how the industry works, and fans' standards can admittedly get unrealistic sometimes. It's all just a natural part of the process. Nevertheless, if Sonic 06 or Sonic Boom (among others) serve any value, it should be as examples for the developers to learn from in order to take good concepts from the past and apply them better in the future. That's how quality games are made :)

I know I’m very late for this, but at 1:54 when Jon brings up other human characters and if you were talking the sketches of those hillbilly esque characters those actually were supposed to be Eggman. When the game still called Sonic Synergy the plot would have been an origin story for Sonic and friends in this world. Sonic and Eggman started out as friends, but when they time traveled Eggman did something and broke their friendship. So I think that was what Eggman was supposed to look like before they time traveled.

Animaniac190 Its not so much that.Its more of the fact that once again, SEGA pushed the game to be released at its deadline, ignoring the problems the game's development is having and pushes the creators to get it released now. SEGA did the same with Sonic 06, pushing the Sonic Team to get the game released by Christmas to be a Launch title for the XBox360. SEGA does not know when to delay a game or cancel.

+Daniel Martin It's not as simple as that. Using another engine would have required porting over all their work so far, which may not always be successful. It'd almost be like starting over.What should have been done is that the exclusivity deal should have never been made, since nothing profitable actually came of it.

+jon3s115 It's controls were beyond fucked. The speed characters were too fast, the controls were rather sloppy, and the combat was just...awful. Doesn't help that enemies were rocking health bars, slowing down the pace of the game, and certain levels required you to look for x amount of stuff for Team Chaotix
