As a sonic glazer, im happy someone has an optimistic view on the series. Only having beating 1 or maybe 2 games. Sega has been cooking with stuff they havent acknowledged this lore in a hot minute

You don’t have to play every previous Sonic game in order to understand the story. Sonic X Shadow Generations story was confirmed in an interview that the game is being designed for newcomers who got into Sonic through the movies. So, despite it being a time travel story, the necessary information to know in order to understand the plot is minimal. Sonic games have a habit of being primarily episodic adventures that anyone can get into whilst still offering a continuation from previous events. That being said, I understand if you’d still rather find out the old games lore first, I would recommend watching the numerous cutscene complications of Sonic Adventure 2. Then Shadow the Hedgehog. Then Sonic Heroes in that order on KZbin. While they aren’t necessary viewing to understand the plot, viewing them may engross you in the new game’s overarching continuity and result in your appreciation of the upcoming entry’s story more than otherwise.

Sonic Adventure 2 was when he was awakened by Eggman. Initially he intended to destroy humanity using the ARK’s laser cannon, but then it was discovered that it was Gerald Robotnik’s plan to destroy Earth after the loss of Maria drove him insane, and that he altered Shadow’s memories were altered. He ends up joining the heroes. Across Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog the game, Shadow struggles with his amnesia and understanding his purpose while confronting Black Doom, an alien conquerer who provided his own DNA to Gerald create Shadow. Eventually he comes to terms and moves on from his past for a couple games acting as a mercenary for G.UN. along with Rouge. Shadow Generations takes place simultaneously alongside Sonic Generations so quite a bit of time after Shadow was awakened.

Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic Generations and its expanded remake Sonic x Shadow Generations, and finally Sonic Forces. As others have mentioned there is a timeline to Sonic games (which now also includes the ongoing IDW Comics and the new Sonic Prime show since they're now trying a singular canon approach aside from the movies that are meant to hook newcomers) in that some games have ties to others, ranging from having sequel-ish elements to mere "remember when" mentions or allusions, with the more significant through lines often involving character arcs but the series has always leaned more episodic however grand each game's story may or may not be.
