In this video I show my point of view as a fan of Sonic CD JP soundtrack about some of the most important differences between Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata composition/arrangement style.

"fast lead sequence" is actually improvisation, it happens a lot in jazz music which seems to be general influence for Hataya Naofumi.

Naofumi's tracks are some of my favorite in the soundtrack because of how much energy they have and the lush sounds he decided to use. Masafumi utilization of synths is also really freaking cool, when stacked against Naofumi's instrument choices, it brings together the technology vs nature themes of Sonic CD

I think Masafumi is the better composer - Collision Chaos present and Wacky Workbench past are absolute legends. One thing that would've been super cool would be if they mixed up who did the good/bad future tracks. For example, each composer does 3 present/past tracks, and the other composer does the good future/bad future of the other composer's three tracks, just to make things a bit more interesting. Anyways, good stuff!

Both Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata have made some of my favorite tracks in the game, but I think Ogata wins this easily. More of his tracks are my personal favorites, like Collision Chaos Present and Futures, Tidal Tempest Past/Bad Future, Wacky Workbench Present/Bad Future, and some of his non-level themes like the Time Attack, D.A. Garden, 510 Title Screen theme. There's really only 4 of his tracks I particularly consider weak (Tidal Tempest Present/Good Future, Wacky Workbench Good Future, and the Special Stage theme). Hataya doesn't have as much personal favorites from me as Ogata, the few of which being Quartz Quadrant Good Future, Stardust Speedway Past/Good Future, and every Metallic Madness theme that's not the Good Future as well as the Final Boss Theme. He also sports many of my least favorite tracks from the game like Palmtree Panic Past and Futures, the vocal themes, the Normal Boss Theme, and Metallic Madness Good Future for example. Whenever I do prefer the US OST, it's typically in areas where Hataya made the music whereas the JPN OST typically wins in areas that Ogata made the music. Again, Hataya isn't a bad composer (far from it), but his tracks are weaker compared to Ogata, and that's because I find Ogata's tracks to be more catchier, and the instrument usage works well with the music, and the areas that the music plays in.

@@shalpp Oh i'm sorry, but I'm keeping in secret all the stuff being done for that. I think it will cause more impact if i only release when everything is totally finished, understand? What I can tell is: It will be the Sonic 2 with the original idea restored. So it will have the island maps, where you will be able to play the levels, it will have the time travel too, not exactly a mecanic like happens in Sonic CD, but we're trying to implement it as we believe it was supposed to be. Like, you will have the island in past, present and future, so we will try to recreate those ideas. For example, you will have sand shower, and in the past it will became a ice level, where the sand will became snow. We will also add some of the scrapped badniks, such as the one that comes out from sand. Here is a list of the levels we will do: Ocean Wind Tropical Plant Sand Shower (the desert that appears in old magazines) Rock World (ice variation of the desert Hidden Palace Death Egg from the concept art Is a very challenging project, because the new level art such as tropical plant and death egg must not simply look good, it also must be compatible with the game art direction, fits in the game. So i'm all the time restarting things because a lot of times i feel like is not correct. But I'm confident in the end it will looks very good, yet i'm sure it will delay a lot of time to be completed, probably more than one year. I also managed to make a very nice recreation of the Sand Shower, i think it looked much more accurate than other recreations. We are also finishing the wood zone art. In an old interview the artist said the art was very incomplete, so we're trying to imagine it finished. To be honest, the main reason i'm doing this project is because I want to play a game like that, and i never see. I mean, there are some really amazing sonic 2 recreations such as Sonic 2 Delta and Sonic 2 Long Version. But honestly? I always felt the levels could be way more accurate, specially Sand Shower. And people tend to never try to finish the wood art, which is a shame because i really love this art, and it has such a great potential. I'm very anxious to have this project finished. We also crossed the Sonic 2 Beta internal level order with the conceptual maps, to try to guess which song was supposed to be on each level. So the Rock World will use Sky Chase theme (I was very susprised for having delayed so much to notice that christmas cliche on this song lol) and Tropical Plant will use Emerald Hill 2P. But once I release it i will let you know, thank you so much for your interest!

Hey, I know that this comment is a bit old, but Spencer Nilsen didn't compose Metallic Madness. It was Mark Crew (a.k.a. Sterling) and Bobby Vega. These two also composed Collision Chaos and the Boss theme (hence why they sound the way they do). And we can't forget David Young, who composed a big part of the US soundtrack with Spencer Nilsen and Pastiche, the trio which provided the vocals for many US tracks.

@@elone7744 That's also why these tracks sounded more abstract and different than the rest of the Present themes. I think i prefer a bit the Masafumi Ogata style but mad respect to Hataya for all Quartz Quadrant and Stardust Speedway! I just don't like the Orchestra Hits in his style which is why Metallic Madness is my least favorite Present theme cuz the main melody is with this sound. I'm actually sad now because R2 was probably a level composed by Ogata and it was scrapped, DA Garden is an amazing song and i wonder how the other times sounds.
