Sonic Origins Plus Frustrates Me (RANT)

During a Dead Cells stream, I was asked about my opinions about Sonic Origins Plus. I had a lot to say about it and mostly lines up with a video I scrapped months ago. All I ask is that you are civil with your comments.

The thing that boils my blood about the "should have had the foresight to wait for plus" crowd is that plus wouldn't exist if everyone did that. If everyone waited for plus Sega would have said "oh, I guess no one cares about Sonic Origins" and that would have been the end of it.

I mean, we already had (arguably) better ways to play remasters of the games and with lots more bonus content and little details they would never consider adding officially. And whatever gameplay or music content origins brought could be added to things like Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic 3 Air, etc with time. So would it really mattered if nobody cared origins, especially in the state it was when it first released?

Honestly I feel the same way. Especially considering that the only reason origins plus exists was because frontiers having massive shoes for new dlc, otherwise you know fully well Sega of Japan did not feel this was needed last year. 2 years ago they considered the game gear games not a worthwhile thing to celebrate even after Christian whitehead included several Easter eggs in mania. Suddenly they turn their opinion around just like that? This is cash grab and donation and that ain't cool

I respect your opinion, I don’t hate Origins that much but that’s because I bought the game when it was half off at the time and it was with leftover money I think. So it wasn’t something that annoyed me too much but I knew there were probably better versions of the classics by fans out there like Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute and Sonic 3 AIR, I still think Origins is okay/good but it could’ve been handled better.

Before I watch, I wanna say my thoughts on this DLC. It is a disappointment. All I wanted from DLC was a Knuckles Chaotix remaster remake. I hate Knuckles Chaotix, but it deserves a remaster. It's part of the classic saga just as much as CD does! And no, I don't hate Chaotix cause of the tether. I'm neutral to positive on it honestly, it's pretty neat. I hate that game cause it's super directionless, it's like a Postal 4 Errand but much worse (at least Postal 4 is a good game). Knuckles Chaotix could probably benefit from a minimap and redone level design.

Well said, well said. While I am more positive towards origins doesn’t mean I had and still have problems. Mostly the price why $10 extra if you bought the game if people who will buy it newly will get the base price. The new features are cool but still should’ve been in the base game like knuckles in CD like bruh NOW YOU DO IT?! Also if people are excusing the extra $10 for these new games and features that’s even more bull crap the new people will get all these new features and fixes for $40 while the people who bought it when it came out we have to pay $50-55. While I am kinda excited for the dlc it’s still frustrating

It's getting worse now that douchebags at GameBanana are pushing this "rule" to retroactively remove features like playable Amy in all games and Knuckles in CD in mods because "we can't have mods compete with Sega" to get people to buy Sonic Origins and the Plus DLC on PC. Except that Sega is not only willingly handing out to you a subpar experience riddled with problems than their previous releases, they are willing to screw over fans like what happened with Stealth during the development of vanilla Sonic Origins. Let's not forget that Sonic Origins Plus's retail release on consoles does not even include everything advertised on the disc/cartridge, the Plus upgrade is on a download voucher, which who knows how long those will last, and my favorite part is Sega putting DENUVO on 20-to-30-year old Sega Genesis games and Game Gear ROMs. If these people want to take away features and force modders to stifle themselves to justify Sonic Origins's existence on PC, then frankly these shills deserve the company they kowtow to.

I understand the frustration. Truth be told the Game Gear games looks like a half baked bonus that they have just shoved into the museum. The meat and potatoes is probably Knuckles getting not only Sonic CD support but proper routes and the addition of Amy. For me, my hope is if I am going to pay for this DLC, that it at least paid for some "free update" from Stealth and Headcannon to finish the game and iron out the main outstanding issues. Does that make it right...? Not really. And that's IF they fixed the issues. It doesn't change the fact that it got a barebones single patch in a year of its release.

The thing is that I'm fine with the Game Gear games seeing another release, though adding the Master System games would have been even cooler. I just don't think they should have released Origins in the state it was and then release a DLC pack. One definitive release is all this should have been.

@@GottaBeFrank Yeah what they did to stitch Origins together was pretty messed up. My understanding is, they took the mobile ports of Sonic 1 and 2, and CD, took one frame of the spindash to simulate the drop dash, they then wrapped the hedgehog 2 engine around it, which introduced other issues, like them having to reintroduce the music and sounds into the game, and that resulted in us losing the remastered soundtracks for 1 and 2, and many of the Sonic CD sound effects / the voice clips. Then Sonic 3 was handled by headcannon on its own which is why it has the most effort with new animations a proper dropdash and more, it was then taken and integrated into the hedgehog 2 engine like the rest, which caused issues. Then everything was sort of handled barebones and low budget, with the admittedly nice 3D islands basically using generations assets etc and whatever was laying around in the engine, notably no classic 3D knuckles was ever created for generations, so there is none on the islands lol, even though he's a massive part of Sonic 3 & K.

My hope is, they will actually fix the game to a level that it is the love letter that it should have been. That they've let headcannon run all over it. They need to, if they are going to justify this upgrade.

Look I'm gonna be frank with everybody, it pisses me off that you have to pay $10 for Sonic Origins Plus but only $5 for Sonic Mania Plus. There's one correct choice here people, one game is $25 total originally releasing in 2017 whilst the other is freaking $50 and isn't even out yet.

As someone who emulates most games (though to be fair, they're pretty old) it still upsets me that you have to pay 10 more dollars just for an upgraded version of Origins. Granted, the original was 40 and it's definitely a bit too much for 4 games initially released in the 90s (and the way the collection came out definitely didn't help) but at least it wasn't exactly close to full price. Now, those who want to play Plus but didn't buy the OG need to pay about 50. Like, if it was just 5 more dollars, that'd be one thing but as it is now, it's way too much for this collection (even with all the added content). Also, where the Master System roms at? I know they were rarely (if ever) re-released but PLEASE, they make the games a lot easier!

So Frank, of all the recent retro collections that came out as of late, do you have a favorite one? *even if it means the battle network legacy collection since it actually does add the boktai related content* I would have to say tmnt the cowabunga collection is my favorite of all, *what I would expect from a retro collection besides the games, are either add new content such as exclusives that we couldn't get, an extensive art gallery that can either have fun facts, or even tease an eventual new game, adding extra modes for the less experienced players, like rookie hunter from the x legacy collection, or even freaking kid Dracula, a once 30 year old famicom game that was localized and then put in the castlevania anniversary collection* forgive me if the category is somewhat unrelated *might not be about sonic, but the overall purpose of what we would want from a retro collection of games in this day and age, aside using emulators and external means*

There's a few that I like. Collection of Mana is huge for me because it's a series that doesn't get much attention and to get an officially translated Seiken Densetsu 3 was amazing. TMNT's collection is really cool. I grew up with 2 of the games, so the nostalgia exists and I got to play Turtles in Time. The 2 Castlevania collections, Mega Man X and Zero ZX Legacy Collections, and the Contra Collection were also really solid. I can't say anything on the Battle Network Legacy Collection yet, since my copy hasn't arrived, but I'm sure it'll be solid as well.

@@GottaBeFrank if I have to give an honorable mention for me that would be contra *only nitpick, 3 different versions of the first game, 2 for super c, it would've been nice to at least have contra force* classic legacy collection 2 for mega man is a big one because I do like that it teased for mega man 11 with a block man concept art in the gallery, also that it's the only one where you can fight the bosses from the art gallery, without having to go through the games themselves *minor yes, but I think that is cool* again castlevania anniversary collection got kid Dracula *and I'm aware advanced collection got Dracula x on snes, though I don't own advanced collection, as the metroidvania games, as in symphony of the night, gba and ds games, aren't my cup of tea*

I wouldn't buy it if SEGA were still ignoring Origin developer Stealth. He criticized SEGA for not properly supporting it. SEGA lied about giving development time for quality in 2020. Chris Senn and Chris Coffin almost died from the crunch.

I skipped out on the game when it came out last year mostly because I wanted to buy a physical release, and now we are getting one. Months after the game came out. With bonus goodies if you pay extra! To me this seems like last year was a test run and this year they are actually releasing the product.

I feel like the current Sega or rather SegaSammy(Sega only in name nowadays) is like the Capcom when they were at their lowest. Bad decisions only to squeeze a bit more out of you, compromised titles that flies in the face of promised quality, management being completely faulty(that’s been happening for a while) and the higher ups having the say in how the game will fit their investors wants. You can feel how TIRED these Sega/Sonic fans are who had to put up with this BS for the past decade plus and they’re getting fed up. But as long as they can support the toxic positivity crowd more than their legitimate supporters, they’ll encourage that. Remember, they’re a business at the end of the day. Sonic is just as corporate IP as the rest of them, just having the unofficial support of fan games.

The one upside to Origins Plus is there is a physical version. I feel the original release was kinda not the best value to begin with, and it's strange that a collection get's DLC a year later... and it should have been better at release.

When you hear the explanation, it's not hard to be frustrated with how Sega handled Sonic Origins. I felt justified in my rant because I felt scammed by Sega with their collection, just for wanting it. Now they have to shell out another $10 for playable Knuckles in CD, Amy in all games, and Game Gear games. That and the full upgraded version will be the same price as the original base game. I also had a fully scripted video I wanted to work on, that I gave up on because, so I've held on to my opinions of Sonic Origins. It's okay to be frustrated, as a consumer.
