People complaining about the use of glitches is 1) clearly hypocritical (we all benefitted from glitches at some point) 2) not getting the point of a speedrun 3) not realizing that knowing glitches by heart (how, where and when to activate them, and how to use them successfully) is as much of a task as knowing all the secrets of the game, and also requires a lot of skill and practice. In these games, glitches were REALLY common, so they essentially were part of the experience, not mere mistakes. Cool the hell down and appreciate the skill of a fellow player. D.R.

*How many stupid does it takes to understand that glitches and bugs are valids for speed runs* You have to go from point a to b, if a collision fails to detect you, and you get to your destination faster is not your fault. Abusing glitches and knowing how they work is what makes speedruns, so magic. If you didn't put a cheat to go faster, you didn't put a cheat to never kill the player, the speed run is VALID!

You are truly the Sonic master! A little tip, look up on the capsule on Casino Night 2 as soon as you hit it, we all know that on this level you are able to look up, the trick is that by doing this you allow the animals to despawn as soon as they fall below the screen allowing the score counter to start a good bit faster, this is probably a well known trick but it saves valuable frames, possibly even seconds, those animals are slow, and it's very easy to do. Great run tho, epic!

Wow. I watched the whole thing. It's amazing when you switch your focus from killing enemies and getting rings to getting time bonus. I would get obsessed with the casino zone and the machines haha. Metropolis zone always got me. I never actually finished the game without using supersonic. Call me a geek, but the last scene of the game always made me tear. Good job! I'm stealing some of your techniques if I ever play again.

I've been speedrunning this game for about a year, so I know most of the tricks in the earlier levels, but there were some here that I can't believe I'd never thought of. I couldn't believe I'd never seen the skip in Wing Fortress where you clip through the propeller! So simple, but skips a big chunk of the level!

I didn't know about most of those glitches (I'd gotten one or two to happen while messing around with Super Sonic/debug mode for fun, and assumed that it was SS and/or debug that did it. For people who aren't familiar with the speedrun community, there are different types of speedruns. This guy is opting for straight time. That means glitches, warps, and other exploits are acceptable. If he was doing a "full path" speedrun, then this wouldn't be allowed. This doesn't appear to be a TAS either. Mad props there.

quickly flashing objects don't get picked up well by recording software, they either appear a solid color or don't show up at all, that's why you normally see sonic rolling as a static blue sphere instead of actually spinning.

If I recall, it's because of transparency. Alongside what Dr. Polaris said, computer combine colours weirdly in some cases, and instead of getting purple (blue background with red/yellow thrust) we get grey here.

the genesis and pretty much all consoles at the time could not do transparency, they faked it by flashing it each frame or using dither, which is checkerboarding to look see-through, which wouldnt look bad on an old blurry CRT television. after thinking about it, i think hes playing the game at 60 fps, but recording at 30 fps, because this same static blue sphere sonic effect could be seen in the sonic mania trailer and pretty much all classic sonic letsplays.

Do you know how narrow the margin for error was? This is art. With the exception of long, cinematic sequences including the Sky Chase slowing you down, that was every level in under a minute. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of traps and pitfalls avoided by micrometers. Too bad you used glitches because I was interested in the way the levels were designed to accommodate both the fastest and most methodical runs. I really can't say the developers had glitches in mind when they made the game.

No one has ever put one together on video, and I'm certain you could put together something really nice (though now with all the big glitches in the later levels, the appeal of it isn't the same, I still would like to see one because collecting rings efficiently as s+t is pretty hard!)

nineallday000 I did a run of All Emeralds, it's not nearly as optimised cause I didn't put as much time into it, but it's there kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHrTmKewltd9fqODh and, the error log is 8 seconds + 4 in Hilltop 1, so we're pretty close on what time we think is optimised. In regards to the pause abuse, honestly I did more in this run than I did in past attempts, because I was getting really frustrated at all the runs I had choked away at the end, I just wanted to hurry up and get a good time, regardless of the product. Pausing the CP2 jump is a good example of a pause that's done more out of frustration than anything else, but one like Metro 3 I believe are the right option, because overall it'll make the run more optimised, getting harder tricks more often.
