Sonic The Hedgehog: The Lost Worlds is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by ExecByte. This hack features all of the zones that were cut from Sonic 2 during development. Some zones have been ported from the Sonic 2 Simon Wai prototype and then finished up, and some have been created based on magazine pictures and information from interviews with people who worked on Sonic 2.

I don't know, the Casino Night Zone doesn't technically count as a lost world, but more of the beta version of the final product. The level even nearly has the same level design as the original.

Bennett Orcutt Believe me, it isn't. You'll get bombarded by horrible enemy and bottomless pit placement. Razor and Zenon use save states apparently so I don't think they count.

Sonic 2 Delta has the best beta level recreations of all the hacks out there. The enemy placement in Lost Worlds is horrendous, there are too few checkpoints, meaning you'll end up back at the beginning of a level after getting more than halfway through. The boss choices for zones are hilariously stupid (Oil Ocean boss in Wood Zone? Seriously?). It's just really bad.

Finally, an actual hack that brings back the removed zones. Although, the levels sometimes look too repetative, it's actually amazing that someone could do the entire levels.

There is plenty of unfinished art in those zones. As you can recall all Sonic 2 levels have some sort of large and small details, plus overlaps, where some level elements are in front of Sonic, like decorations, walls or girders.

Hidden Palace was reused on the iOS and Android ports of Sonic 2. It was a secret level accessible through Mystic Cave. Remember that pit with spikes at the bottom that you cant escape without debug mode? Well, it’s replaced with the entrance to Hidden Palace.

Now, the zones, I heard, didn't make it due to time running out on the game's development. I hear this a lot regarding Sonic games. JoaoGameplaysSP Yeah that would have been neat but also a very time consuming task on the developers part. Chances are Sega might not even want something like that as Desert Dazzle and Final Fever were planed levels for the 2011 Version of Sonic CD but removed because Sega wanted the game to be faithful to original. Chances are that ended up being the reason Egg Gauntlet was scrapped from the mobile version of Sonic 2, although I don't see why that can't just replace the Boss Rush mode already included.

In Sonic Mania mirage saloon zone is a reimagined zone taken from dust hill. The same guy who did the hidden palace zone for the ios did that zone so it's not out the realm if a sequel is made from Sonic 2 unfinished zones these guys will find a new way to bring out these unfinished zones

Plus, the final boss is just a copy-pasted version of the Metropolis zone boss, which wasn't a very difficult boss to begin with. Granted, it's a huge pain in the balls to fight, but if you still have rings, you could beat the boss in good time.

This hack is strange in light of the information on development that’s been received. Dust Hill was a junkyard and a ruined GHZ, the desert stage was Sand Shower. There were MANY more cut zones: Secret Jungle, Madness Medieval, Blue Lake, Ocean Wind, Tropical Plant, Tropical Sun, and Emerald Isle.

I can see why they pulled some stages out. That zone is so white! They figured it out and perfected it for Sonic 3. And the forest zone, eh.... Poorly designed, not finished by a long shot but alright as they likely evolved that into the first stage of Sonic and Knuckles, much more detailed zone.
