Believe it or not, the original of "Superstar" isn't by Carpenters. Originally recorded by Delaney and Bonnie. It's on KZbin and much more blue-eyed bluesy compared to Carpenters' passionate, orchestrated version/arrangement.

About seven years ago I went to LA for the sole purpose of seeing a Pearl Jam & Sonic Youth show. The night before that, some friends and I went to a little dive karaoke bar to kill some time, and Kim and Thurston were there. Just singing karaoke, like no big deal. I don't think anyone else there even knew what they were being treated to. It was strange to see them play to a room of people who barely mustered up the strength to do a courtesy applause one night, then the next seeing thousands of people screaming at every little thing they did. But maybe that's what they liked about the bar - Being treated normally. Ahh, so cool. :)

Kim (and Sonic Youth) as a band are huge fans of the Carpenters - Karen in particular. I think they see parallels between themselves and her personally. Having success but not necessarily wanting it. Being "dressed up" by the music industry and expected only to look and sound a certain way and play the instruments they were told to play the way they were told to play them... It's sad to think that everything but Karen Carpenter killed Karen Carpenter.

I like how different the two sound, one's so happy and the other's got all that angst of the 90's. A beautiful cover of a beautiful song, by a beautiful band. All the different versions of "Superstar" are good - the Carpenters' (of course!), Rita Coolidge's (maybe the best), Delaney and Bonnie's - but Sonic Youth's version certainly stands out. You can feel the melancholy in Thurston Moore's voice, and you can imagine he's mourning Karen as he sings. He's certainly honoring her; that's the whole point of the song.
@InstantLeprosy
@InstantLeprosy 6 жыл бұрын
YES! I had heard that of all the songs on "If I were a Carpenter", that Richard Carpenter hated this version. I think he's nuts. It is obvious Sonic Youth LOVES the Carpenters. They treated this song with the utmost in respect and even gave a tip of the hat to Karen's love for the drums by having Kim Gordon playing drums at times during the video. And you really hit the nail on the head about the melancholy in Thurston's voice - THAT makes the song like no other version ever. This is an incredibly touching tribute to the Carpenters.

These days, I can only listen to this version of the song. Whenever I hear The Carpenters original version I tear up because of Karen's voice. I think I can relate a lot to her and how she had a lack of self confidence in her abilities, and her story just breaks my heart. She seemed like such a lovely person, and even though she passed away long before I was even born I still feel such sadness when I hear the original Superstar.

I didn't know this was a cover the first time I watched it, around 1997, and I loved it. I went to the music stores searching the record that included this one. The only SY record without song titles at the back cover was Sister, so I thought "This Could Be" sadly it wasn't, but then I discovered something even better: the best album I've ever listened.

+tuber00009 Definitely darkness. You've already stated that maybe insincerity is the wrong word and I'd agree.
