I remember I got shocked when I heard them, they were so incredible different. And then I saw a clip and was like “whaaaaaat, sonic old guys!”, as most of the 90s bands members were in their early 20s while Sonic Youth ones were much older. But man, those incredible beautiful noisy melodies!

Love how one guitar is panned to the left and one to the right, and each plays it's own lines which are different but interweaving. I love the guitar on the left... how it's so sparce and a little sloppy, almost on purpose to give the song it's moody sound and feel. Great song.
@80srs115 жыл бұрын
The same way The Ramones recorded bass on the left and guitars on the right.
@josephdenoia14085 жыл бұрын
Sonic Youth did that a lot during production, Thurston Moore on one side and Lee Reynoldo on the other, because both were incredible and doing so allowed the band to showcase each talent individually whilst allowing both individual (i.e. NOT IDENTICAL) lines to play off/ merge with each other, which was a big, if not always obvious, part of the genius behind Sonic Youth's sound.
@retriever19golden555 жыл бұрын
Love how Thurston mostly sings with his eyes closed
@Duzz145 жыл бұрын
They usually weren’t in the same tunings either. They both used wild tunings(I know everyone knows that) Lee used a lot of paired string tunings.

If you like interweaving guitars (not so much in mix but style of play) check out Television's Marquee Moon with Verlaine and Lloyd switching between lead and rhythm (but less traditional in their case). They set the ground work for many bands that followed.

i came to Sonic Youth, inspired by their wall of effects. I stayed because i accidentally absorbed their master-craft level of melody, structure, and the fine art of barely controlling a wall of sound, and their wisdom to just let the wall of sound take over from time to time. it's now thirty years (or more) later, and i'm still stunned by their body of work.

When I was 16, I saw their live in Tokyo in 1998. I always remember that it was crowded in front of the venue that was not large, jumped all the time, closed my eyes in the guitar noise of the explosion, and flew to a different world.

I have not been a huge SY fan. But the more I hear the more I like them. They have some great songs, are a very important band historically, and I really dig Murray Street -> Sonic Nurse -> Rather Ripped. And Teen Age Riot has to be one of the greatest rock songs ever.
