I thank you so much. This is common sense but it's so easy to get tunnel vision when you're trying to balance being an artist, producer, full time employee, band mate, etc. thank you so much

If you have the talent to write good songs. Try building it alone and then get into forming the band and preparing the live concept ( with imagination you can get ahead while you are writing and recording your ideas). That can free you from some of the claustrophobia you talk about. Dedicate time to building the project, while you do that you can plan ahead for when the multi tasking comes along. If you are doing all that stuff at the same time you are composing, your energy wont be well committed to writing, an that is the most important step. You have to have GREAT/GOOD SONGS.

I believe it's who you know and how much you want it. If I wanted to take singing more serious than app karaoke at a higher level like my fav. App smule sing!... (i love my inner diva).... I'd invest lol but Im too shy to sing infront of actual people. It fails me right there unless I can sit into a cubical (look! Its the cube lady) .. Ill push puns aside here... to actually get anywhere, u need to be prepared to get there and be willing to perform infront of an audience. If I wanted to take it seriously. But I myself sing for less stress not for money. I probably drive my neighbor nuts lol

I'd like to add to the 3rd Audience builder: Interact and engage online. I see so many bands that have 5000 followers, 200 comments, etc on Twitter, IG, Facebook, YT and they are following 0. Responding to 0 comments. Build a community around your band! Great video. I've been working on a lot of these for a current client of mine. I like how you organized the actions.

This guy's narration fascinates me... every sentence starts off with medium volume, and then he amps it up in the middle... and the last word of every sentence trails off into a tiny whisper. I'm not sure if he's doing this on purpose or if he just talks like that for some reason. But it's unusual to say the least.

absolutely spot on! Don't come from a position of 'fear.' You must remember that 'you are YOU' and they ... are they! There's enough room for everyone and everyone brings something to the table. I agree that envy, jealousy are negative emotions that don't serve you well. Unfortunately, we all know that there are people who have little to no talent in the music business who are 'up there in lights'. You've got to simply be yourself, forget about them and concentrate on who you are and where you're going and what steps or strategies will help you get there. At the end of the day, the most important factor is to enjoy your musical journey.

The best advice! In my country a lot of people does nothing else than liking dead artists and paying tribute to them! The bitter side of the story is that if you don’t do that, you don’t belong to that group and you don’t get followers (that’s my experience). Oh well
@stephenpercival6318
@stephenpercival6318 3 жыл бұрын
That's bad advice. It's the deceased artists of the past you are still competing with as well as live ones. And then you have the old ones rehashing or reinventing. Think about it. That's why this industry is so hard if not impossible to crack. Then there's the corruption ...
@Sumbibebe
@Sumbibebe 8 жыл бұрын
I've been giving out this same advice since 2012 but I'm not a Pro in the industry, I just observe it close. It's good to hear a professional experienced person confirm that the single is the way to go. My logic for this way of thinking is that in the past, with vinyl, they could control all sales and we had to buy it to hear it. Today we just want to download what we like and honestly, 98% of and album sucks. Sooner than later no one will be buying albums, only singles. B-side music still cost a lot to make, so why make it? Sumbi

This is clearly the best video on this topic I've ever found! Thank you so much! One thing, to extend your point. KZbin now is a good option to replace live shows (to some extant). I live in a country with no conditions for make it as a metal artist, and conquering local stage first was one of the worst tips I'd been given (6 years wasted). And now, after 3 years of making videos and having 27k followers, my audience is the whole World! Thanks to Internet and KZbin in particular, I finally make for a living being a musician. So, my suggestion to young musicians is to open your mindset to the opportunities that the modern world gives you.

The best thing I've found to do to sound pro is hire someone off the site www.soundbetter.com. A hired person of your choice can do your music professionally for a fee. It could be less than 100 but usually more. I've never had to pay more than 200. I've sent rough tracks of a song that isn't played that great but I pay the person to play it right. A basic recording and a chord chart is all they need. I've hired guys for just 1 instrument or vocals or to do the entire song. I've even had composers back my song with an orchestra. Even though it was done digitally by one guy its still great. I've found people on there who have worked in t.v. and movies and written with famous people. I wrote a song with a guy who plays with Blake Shelton. He's a really great musician. If you'd like to hear some of my songs that were written by me and played on by people on the site then just message me. I'll send links of my songs. Sometimes when you write songs you need to let the pros take over. Think about it, an architect can draw plans for the most beautiful looking building yet didn't even lay a brick or hammer a nail to make it look as great as the finished product. That's basically what you are as a writer. A few times I hired more than one person to complete my songs. Check out the site to learn more.

Thanks for making this video Justin! Really appreciate all the stuff you said and I definitely got some helpful new ideas from hearing this. It's a time consuming struggle to market your music, especially if it takes away from your music making, but I need to force/ convince myself that it needs to be done once you develop, grow, and improve as an artist. I've spent a lot of time only getting better as a musician and producer but now i think it's time to tackle the marketting and selling aspect of music. Take care!

Lets be real, a lot of music is DEAD....ROCK is DEAD, INDIE is a low following hippie scene that no fan has money to suport and its the kind of style that would never break out... ONE THING is if you ask me you got to be reall to where your music can take you!!! That is the most important thing, enjoy your music and give zero fucks to anyone around you...Yeah we all want to live off of that but sooner or later 99,99999% of you reading this comment will slowlly get a job and every year you will drift away from your passion inch by inch. I know this is depressive but reality is reality, this music industry is a mess and its getting worse year by year plus the culture is changing so fast that no one knows where to turn

Great and truthful advice. Another key ingredient is confidence. Not arrogance, but simply believing you are good enough. It's a rarity that the next hit style is predictable. It's usually just a copy or facsimile of what has broken through to the masses. Always throw your hat into the ring if you are to ever know and of course the endless hours of work, performance, and attention is most vital indeed. Thanks Justin!

Wish I heard this info 10 years ago. Been doing it all wrong for my daughter. She has sung from San Diego to Burbank to Orlando to NYC and back and still performs and DJ's as well and is a dance choreographer, but getting across that amateur to professional line of the music industry, that's as wide as the Grand Canyon. She's been singing since the age of 4 and performed in a radio station competition at the age of 10 and was the only kid there competing against adult groups and solo artists and she got the only standing ovation that day. So, yeah, I'm frustrated trying to figure this out. Even went to American Idol and the Voice. So thanks for the info. Great info.

Dude thank you. I have been banging my head against a closed door emailing blogs and getting nothing. This was the last piece I needed. In going to try your suggest another band and compliment the articles they write. The thing is I don't look to music journalists to break new bands so I couldn't understand how to even interact w them. They came of as some disengaged gatekeeper that I was becoming frustrated w. Thank god for utube
