As already said under the video of another youtuber. The advice "don't eq more than X db" is actually a misconception of internet forums. To understand where this advice comes from (which also applies to compression), you have to go back a little in time. At the time when the studio was not so far from live sound and when we recorded on tapes by PROCESSING the signal on the way in . And just like live, a rule always true is: shit in = shit out. So, at that time, when we EQed and compressed BEFORE recording or, live, during soundcheck, we always said to beginners: "Don't Eq that much". Which didn't mean that it was bad to EQ so much but rather: "if you feel the need to EQ/compress so much, then it's probably better to go back to the source and review your placement/choice microphone/instrument/equipment. Basically, this rule is nothing more than "don't fix in the mix". But forums and youtube comments transform this into a bullshit.

There’s probably some truth to what you are saying here. But I think it predates Internet forums. I used to see this kind of thing in physical magazines back in the day all the time, and not only with the kind of nuance and context you’ve offered here. -Justin

Man this is something that i had to learn the hard way and Im so glad that i got the blunt truth of this when you did the mix critiques. Since then, I been viewing Compression and EQ for that matter differently and updated my mixing methods. I remixed a track that I initially sent back a few months ago, and he said that this new updated one sounds much more fuller and liked the vocals. It wasnt the song from the mix review, but those suggestions helped shape how I do things now. The youtube membership is so worth it people!

This advice is a matter of mindset...if your messing up with the knobs, you obviously doesn't like the sound, so the truth behind it is probably "if the sound doesnt fit, the knobs won't help"... messing up with the knobs can be a matter of sound design like creating the snare on "She drives me crazy - Fine Young Cannibals", which accidentally becomes a signature sound, or the Gate Reverb on Phil Collins Songs which is outside all music-book-theory kind of reverb :)

This is one of the most important lessons to learn! I'd have "cut don't boost" in my top 10 for sure.

As a dovetail, your #1 also depends on specific numbers, as if these are universal constants that will work across entire mixes. It’s literally mixing by numbers instead of mixing with intent and purpose.

And compressors are all so different too, takes time but that should be fun. Just don't wait until you have a job to get done to start playing around. How do you think Frank Zappa made Grand Funk sound good?

Yup! One of the tricky things about mixing advice is that it's all relative to what you are doing now, where you are trying to end up, and what genre you are working in. -Justin
