We had a 1st gen Echo in our master bathroom for listening to music in the morning kzbin.infoUgkxABghAEkaIDGZfHRBH3D3rBrlraNmnC71 and while in the shower. I didn't realize how tinny and awful the sound output on the original Echo was until we replaced it with the Studio. It was a sonic upgrade far beyond what I was expecting. Just wow. I love it because it's like having speakers IN the shower. My friend likes it because the music is so loud that she can no longer hear me singing. So that's a win-win.

As in turntable, CD, Cassette Deck, Tuner etc. all plugged into a Preamp. Can the Preamp OUTPUT go into SONOS Connect Amp INPUT. Hence, turning up volume of any selected source on Preamp and listening through speakers coming out of SONOS Connect Amp :)

Thank you for this video. I have a Sonos system and I just plan to buy the Sonos connect for having the possibility to connect an external audio source (CD-player or the sound of my computer while watching a movie) ONLY through my Sonos speaker system and NOT trough an existing audio set. Almost EVERY video I found about the use of Sonos Connect speaks about using it to play Sonos streaming music on your existing audio system, but I only want it to work the other way around, so to play it external source music on my Sonos speaker system. While you also explained the first option you did mention that your vinyl will play on the Sonos and that's what I hoped to see demonstrated. I know that if I want to connect a vinyl record player to the Sonos connect, I will need a vinyl pre-amplifier before connecting it to the Sonos Connect, or else I should buy the connect AMP, that's the Sonos Connect including an amplifier. So thank you for the nice video.
@stephenjlr7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean, Thanks for the comment. If you're planning on using the connect to stream the audio from a movie, you might want to investigate the lag issue (demonstrated at the very end of my video). It may cause problems syncing the audio with the video. If you are using a Connect AMP you would also need the phono pre-amp to bring the turntable signal up to line level. The Connect AMP would only allow you to be rid of your separate amp and drive passive speakers directly, but as your system is made up only of SONOS components, this wouldn't benefit you. Some vinyl turntables have a phono pre-amp built in. These would be able to connect directly to the Connect.

Yes, unless your turntable has a built in phonostage (pre amp) you will need one. The signal that comes from the turntable is very week. A phono pre amp will boost this up to line level. Your connect amp can then work with this signal.

@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
mervy210 thank you. The sonos connect will process the analog with the onboard DAC and broadcast digital signal to the sonos network. Hi Ted, great video and thanks for demonstrating the delay. One question: is there a lag between the different speakers? In other words, does your Play 5 lag behind the stereo setup because Sonos has to send the audio over to it? Say I had several Sonos speakers in a room, would they all play the turntable sound in sync (like regular music streaming) or would there be a lag from one to the others because of the heavier/richer nature of the audio? Thank you I appreciate the response. I would like to get a Play 5 to connect to my turntable (via line in) and have the sound play on my other Sonos speakers in sync.
@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas, if you are going turntable>Sonos Connect>amp>speakers, then that sound will be in sync with any other speaker you have grouped with the Connect.
@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to clarify I haven't actually done this via the line in on the Play5 but in theory it should be the same as what I'm demonstrating. If you are using the Play5 to receive the turntable signal you will need to ensure it has gone through a phono stage/pre-amp to bring it up to line level.
@nicholasshelton48226 жыл бұрын
@@stephenjlr Yeah my turntable has a built-in pre-amp! Ok thats awesome, yeah I figure it would probably be the same using a Play 5, I just wasnt sure of the wireless Sonos system would be able to handle the heavy, uncompressed analog audio coming in from a turntable and stream it evenly to all the players in sync. A delay between the turntable and the system I can live with, but a lag from speaker to speaker would be a nightmare... and my reasoning for using a play 5 instead of a Connect:Amp - if Im gonna buy something to integrate vinyl into my Sonos system, I might as well get another speaker out of it! :) Thanks again for the response!
@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
@@nicholasshelton4822 The Sonos unit will process the input analog (via it's DAC) and broadcast it digitally . It won't be broadcasting the raw analog data. It was one of the drawbacks I talk about, in that if you wanted to listen to the turntable directly with the setup I have here, you can't bypass the DAC without re wiring the setup. Some vintage amps however give an option to do this. I demonstrate in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6SmaJJ9mc9jnMU

Thank you! But what if I want all my input devices (cd and phono) on Play5? Could I use line out on my amp (skip the phono pre amp) and then into the connect?
@simonbaines98216 жыл бұрын
The idea would be sound but doesn't work as the record player must go through an amp. Yes it does play and if you turn up the volume on the speakers you can hear the track albeit quietly. I know this because I just tried to replicate this. At first I thought it wasn't working but then after clearing the room of a noisy children I found I could just hear it. I first thought my old record players phono cables were damaged until I dug out a Bose speaker I could hear via my old amp. So retested and yes, music but was too quite really to get the full enjoyment. I could however play my streamed music through my old speakers but as these are going it isn't ideal. So with that setup it will work if you are wanting to use old speaker via the old amp. Not sure if the Sonos connect:amp would work but it doesn't have the Phono out so can't how that would work to and existing setup that would use the existing speakers. You can however connect up two speakers to that system. So over all great idea just a damn shame it doesn't quite work.
@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, the output from a turntable will always need to be amplified to line level using a Phono Stage/Phono Amp. What you've described sounds like you're sending the turntable signal directly to a line in input? Some integrated amps have a phono stage built in. Some turntables have a phono stage built in, otherwise you would need a separate phono stage as I've used in this video. Once you have amplified your turntable output to line level then you can do with that as you please. Either directly into a line in of a SONOS system (connect, connect:amp play:5 etc), or into a line in of an amp.

YES! But it depends on the amp/receiver. I manage to do this with my Yamaha CA-1010 in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6SmaJJ9mc9jnMU The amp needs to have a Phono stage to bring the turntable signal up to line level. If this is built into the amp, then you need a way push this line level signal back to the Connect, rather than just play it locally. Vintage amps with TAPE outputs are perfect for this!

When using the line in on the Sonos connect, your analog source is being digitized. Kind of defeated the reason for playing a record.

Agreed. Unless you have music on vinyl that you cannot access digitally otherwise. Search for my other video using a vintage Yamaha amp which allows an analog pass through for when you want to have a more pure vinyl experience locally and don’t need the multi room functionality. And if that works would the wired speakers sound be in sync with the streamed multi-room audio? I think I'm trying to play analog and stream digital simultaneously, probably not a good idea...My house might explode lol..
@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
I think it is hard to play pure analog in the local system and stream that same signal to other sonos zones and keep it all in sync. It also depends on the Amp. It will need a record out or tape out function. Vintage amps usually have this feature. I demonstrate this in another video streaming a cassette deck using a 1970's yamaha amp
@richardsinger015 жыл бұрын
Adam the best way to stream analog (vinyl etc) is to connect the Sonos Connect analogue output to a spare line input on your hifi preamp and the tape out of the preamp to the Sonos Connect analogue input. I would not connect the phono preamp to the Sonos Connect directly because you then always have to go through the Sonos to listen to your records even in the same room as the turntable. You only have to do this if your preamp has no tape loop. There may be a lag between the live analog and streamed playback, but on my system I can’t tell because the two systems are in different parts of the house at the moment and I can’t hear both clearly at the same time.

Peter Nasser phono pre amps do more than amplify the sound, if you plugged directly in it would sound tinny and lacking bass. Most modern turntables have built in preamp, so you get a line out which can be amplified by any amp or the Sonos. If you have a turntable like audio techinca lp60 you don't need a phono preamp, just amp and speakers.

Junyang Li who has also commented on this video has done something very similar, and been able to remove the lag by changing the settings on the PC Sonos application. Fantastic demo thank you. Sorry if this has been asked but I don’t have any sonos speakers anymore I have a HomePod and really want a record player again with the ability to stream all around my house and to keep a minimalist setup by only using all in one speakers like my homepods. Without being lectured about losing analog signal because it’s only really the mastering quality of the vinyl I care about, would I be able to use only HomePods in conjunction with a sonos connect amp to make a sonos network of speakers, as I’ve heard the HomePod is now compatible with sonos’ inclusion of airplay 2. If this is possible would anyone know if the Siri functionality of the HomePod would then dictate to the sonos network, for instance, “hey Siri play line in”
@stephenjlr5 жыл бұрын
Great question - I'm completely unfamiliar with the HomePod so hopefully another viewer can help out. But from what I've read, it seams that you can only add Airplay 2 enabled SONOS units to the HomePod network. And once you've done this, you are able to send music from your iphone/ipad/watch to multiple sources (ie one homepod and one sonos unit). Rather than adding HomePod units to the SONOS Network and add as a room within the Sonos app? Correct me if I'm wrong here people. So while the connect (and connect amp)does not support AirPlay2 it can be 'grouped' with an Airplay2 enabled Sonos unit to give it AirPlay2 functionality, otherwise the current generation Play5 has a line in and AirPlay2, but, Like I said I don't think the grouping of the two systems has your goals in mind.

Confusing much!? I explain it a bit more in my other video using a Vintage Yamaha amp that has an integrated phono stage.
@godfollower9206 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, nice work explaining! Quick question. My receiver that I use is a vintage Yamaha (CR-1020) and has a phono input, so I don’t require a preamp. Now when adding in the Sonos, I understand needed a preamp before connecting my classic Yamaha turntable (yp-d6: no built in amplification) into the Sonos. Now on the line out of the Sonos, I now assume that I should NOT plug into the phono input on my classic receiver, as it would over amplify the sound(pre amp going into Sonos and amp phono amp of the receiver), and just use the aux input. Is that a correct? Also, I assume if this is the case, I will lose some of the beautiful qualities that comes from playing music through the phono amp of the cr-1020. I’m not a massive audiophile but I do like to warm authentic tones from my current system - just looking for a way to also add in a wireless option to pipe the music to the rest of my place. Thanks for the help!!
@stephenjlr6 жыл бұрын
I've just done an update on this video using a Yamaha CA-1010 kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6SmaJJ9mc9jnMU . So very similar situation to yours. The secret is the "REC OUT SELECTOR". You can listen to the turntable directly through the CR-1020 (Input selector: PHONO) and attached speakers, or if you want to have that room synced with other Sonos zones, you push the signal back through the CR-1020 (REC OUT SELECTOR: PHONO) to the line in of the CONNECT . The Connect should always be Line out to the aux input of the CR-1020. Once you're doing that, you select the connect on the CR-1020 (Input: AUX) and choose line in on the SONOS app for whichever zones you want to broadcast to (including the zone with the connect). Not being able to listen to the turntable "purely" was a gripe of my set up in this video, but the Yamaha gets around it nicely. Another option is to leave your CR-1020 on INPUT:Phono and REC OUT: Phono, then select line in on the sonos app for your other zones. This does cause a sync issue with the wireless zones and the yammy, but I'm told (Other comments on this video) that you can reduce this out of sync issue to ~ 75ms if you change the line in settings to uncompressed on the sonos PC application, although I don't see the point in this, as you would unlikely be doing any critical listening of your main system if you're also broadcasting to all your other zones. Happy listening, and congrats on a lovely bit of kit with the Yamaha!
