Got the 20mm and for astro is f** good for the price. Astro is a very difficult benchmark and the results are impressive. Also like the 20mm length is more versatile to be my lens on the wide-side. I can always do small crops or get slightly closer but getting further away isn't always an option (specially not in astro, but also when shooting buildings or indoors). I've saved the difference to get a 100-400 where I think the GM will bring me much more value than in the wide prime side.

The 24mm G Master doesn't have the new XD-Linear focus system, but a DDSSM system. That's why it is louder and a little bit slower and that's why I bought the 20 mm lens. For use on a gimbal the 20 mm is better as well.

That landscape comparison is exactly why I got the 20mm. That extra 4mm is woah when you're standing at the edge of an Alpine Lake

Why not go even wider then? Just asking. Would a 16mm be better?
@afhdfh2 жыл бұрын
@@Someone-lc6dc wider lenses with a comparable aperture usually have fixed lens hoods which makes it more complicated to use filters. So 20mm 1.8 is a good compromise.

Hi there - According to Sony, the focus mechanism of the older 24mm is not the same as the newer twin motor linear design found in the 20mm later lens - the 24mm I understand from Sony documentation is of the older hypersonic rotary design - hense no sliding back and for motion (noise) whilst not powered up by a turned on camera body (fitted to). This explains the disconnected, sliding, back & fore noise you describe hearing from the non powered up 20mm G lens God bless

Hi! very nice comparison! What do you think about distortion in portraits compared to the 24mm GM? Can I get the same result by cropping a photo taken with the 20mm to reach 24 than taking it with the 24? Will there be any difference in perspective and distortion in the case of cropping? Thanks

For wide shots 20mm all the way, but 24mm F1.4 can do both fairly-wide and wide-standard shots at the same time. 24mm F1.4 is similar to 35mm F2.0 when cropped down, which is still shallow enough. I need both 😂

I have option 3. I dont know what I am missing out on as I didnt get to try the 20 and 24. 35mm f1.8 has the same nervousness for bokeh as the 20mm. I am considering getting the 24 in addition and use the others for mainly video or specific purposes when I need the different focal lengths, but 1250 (after cashbacks) is a lot of money. They again I could imagine this is not what it will cost as I guess 2nd hand value will be good, unless I drop it or it gets stolen.

Enjoyed this one Stefan! I do own the GMaster (bought before the 20 mm was announced) so I am a bit biased in my thinking but I do think that it is a more versatile lens than the 20mm both in the focal length and the low light capabilities. I love the rendering from the GM and was instantly blown away by the images I got from it -it is now my new standard for lenses and worth every dollar ( even Canadian!), imo..I have had a chance to play with the 20 f1.8 at a camera store just before the pandemic lockdowns and it is definitely a mini version of the GM and noticeably smaller and lighter. I played with the Sony 35 f1.8 at the same time and out of the two the 35mm surprised me more-; that looks like a great lens and super fast AF!
@StefanMalloch4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Is it really a surprise the GM is better? Like most comparables, they are usually 80% of the top of the line. For me, as I get pickier, a lens is only as good as its Auto Focus. 😀

@@StefanMalloch Ha,ha,ha Stefan, our "pickiness" is going to be noticed in our bank accounts ( I feel the same way and now rate lenses against the "best" thanks to my experience with the 24 GM. Maybe less 'quantity' but more 'quality' in lens selection going forth should be our motto!

i mean... concluding that the $500 more expensive f1.4 Gmaster is better isnt really much of a conclusion. I think the goal of this video needs to be "should you buy the 20 f/1.8 over the g master" and show if you can get results similar to the gmaster on the 20 mm. and that if there is a compromise, is it worth the price difference. and as usual, if you are a pro/rich, get the g master. if you are a hobbyist/brokeAF, get the 20 mm, crop in, and deal with the bokeh.
