Hi Brian I've been very unhappy with my HDR experience so far on my Sony z9d until today. I was very underwhelmed with the picture. I found it was lacking pop and the image wasn't any better than blu Ray for me. The image was too bright in white areas and blacks were greyish. What I've done is reduce the brightness to 25 and the contrast just a touch to 98. Black adjust low. Ad contrast enhancer off. Local dimming medium. Extended dynamic range high. Colour 50. Expert 1. Live colour high. The image has improved dramatically. This is for movies as I'm not a gamer. My eyes are no longer hurting and I'm getting no headaches anymore.

Very interesting Gary, what kind of content are you watching? The Z9d should be able to control light and dark without frying your eyes. But I'm glad you found a good balance and are happier with it now👍

Whisper Status 74 I watch mainly over the air satellite television I'd say 75 to 80% of the time and blu Rays and ultra hd blu Rays 20% of the time. For regular viewing for television and standard blu Rays my brightness is at 35. It's mainly the HDR that was hurting my eyes as I found the whites blindingly bright with brightness and contrast at max in a fairly dark room. Reducing the brightness hasn't affected the HDR image that much I experimented and found 25 to be the sweet spot if I go under 10 I lose detail in dark scenes with 25 I still have the detail in dark areas the whites are still bright contrast 98 took the edge off the bright whites just a tad I sit about 6 feet away from the tv.

Hey Whisper.. Happy New Year to you and yours. I was wondering if you or any of the viewers have had experience of a vertical bar appearing above and below 60 on colour (colour :-) ) and what this denotes .. e.g. Standard HDR off is my most used and modified (60 for vibrancy 31 for almost all movies incl. Upscaled 1080s).. Black level 8 or 47.. absolutely amazing

Hello, do you have another game to show us 120 fps. I have read in a rtings comment that someone has played 2k 120 fps. Maybe, in a few years we could play 4k in 120 fps when there are consoles or pc's whitch can proccess that quality. Another question, is playing in 120 fps so smooth than playing with interpolation (smoothness 3) or there is more blur? Thank you and congratulations for your videos ☺

I really like your videos and channel. I just subscribed. Keep up the good work friend. I have Sony XE85 (European version) and I can't decide whether should I use live color and advanced contrast or maybe not. Currently, I have color at 60, advanced contrast enhancer on medium, black adjust on medium and live color on low. Also, brightness on 40 and Contrast on 95. I want my picture to look nice, but not oversaturated. I don't want to lose image detail.

Tomek Żyła thank you for the kind words and welcome from the U.S! Your settings look good my friend. Advanced Contrast and live color can be very useful but it really depends on the content , I like how you are using them as your not being to aggressive. You can tell if the content looks fuzzy or in regards to live color if the colors bleed or where a dark red looks bright orange. The better and cleaner the content the more these settings can be used. Yours look good to me!! Whisper Status 74 If it set to auto then netflix is not in hdr. But when i set to hdr 10 then in the right corner says hdr which picture is unwatchable. I use last calibration video for hdr stuff from Quantum.

Christian Rath hello Christian, with motionflow it all depends in the game, mostly 3rd person struggles with some artifacting around the inage. The best way to help it is to set motion to Manuel and adjust the slider and when the artifacting starts knock it back one. Why not use the Black Level setting? It's seems to affect brightness more then the actual Brightness setting, that just affects the local dimming. Or does messing around with the Black level mess up anything in picture quality ? Btw, nice vid as allways - thanks Whisper :)

J N hi J N you are absolutely right about the black level setting being the actual brightness setting . Brightness in the SONY line is actually the backlight. Black level is brightness which is really not commonsense. However all that said black level almost immediately washes out the image if raised , you would think it would increase nits or peak brightness however it just completely Grey's out the image. If it's ever used it's typically lowered to increase black level , which it doesn't really do as that also just darkens everything and just crushes the image. Thanks for the reply Whisper :) Yeah have played around with it and can see (as you say) it clearly just washes out the picture if raised, or black crush if lowered. So best to leave it at default, and play around with the gamma/ live coulour or contrast if needed! Thanks again for your input, it's worth golden to me :)

Do you really need any kind of motion enhancers when the game itself is 60fps? A bit surprised about that. Would you say that game mode really takes too much away from the picture? It's a shame , I honestly don't have that with my B6. And last but not least, how noticeable is the extra input lag for you outside of game mode? From what I read is that game mode is like 28ms or so and that is decent enough. That's a little lower than my B6 and when I game outside of game mode it gets bad.

Thijs van Abs the extra lag is there but nothing crazy and I through the motion in for fun as it adds to the cinematic feel. Read Corey Masseys comment in this section on game mode as he lays out in detail.

Whisper Status 74 thank you for the very helpful replies. One more thing, if you enable HDR in game mode, does the input lag get worse or stays the same? And I assume HDR in game mode goes real bright too?

Thijs van Abs HDR mode does not increase lag on Sony's however on some displays last year Samsung and vizio the input lag nearly tripled which is why vizio has a separate HDMI for the 17ms input lag and that HDMI does not support HDR. Sony is the same across the board in this regard

Good video man..to bad my Xbox One S doesn't do HDR, i use Custom mode, the Live works different on Custom mode, it seems different modes works different on some settings, like on Custom on the One s auto local dimming and xteneded dr BOTH made the image brighter...i find it odd.

Depends on the game. The one S can definitely do HDR, but it depends on the game. You can check online via in or other gaming websites as to what games are HDR enabled for the Xbox one S. I know off the top of my head gears 4, forza horizon 3 and motorsport 7, resident evil 7, star wars battlefront 2, battlefield 1, assassin's creed origins all support HDR

Hi so I have purchased a 75 sony900e and am having a issue was wondering if you can inform me what the problem is... When I am watching a show, between scenes, the colors turn gray very quickly before switching scenes. This doesnt happen at every scene change but happens pretty often. Happy holidays gamers......happy 2018! So I know I haven't responded in awhile, but VR starts to pull your other senses so I've officially converted to VR+headset for absolute immersion. This has taken away the possibility of a favorite past time of mine which is tuning to this channel and playing games while I listen to you talk about games and tv's. But I wanted you to know I am still out here listening ( when I can) so keep the good content coming for 2018. On a technical note, a big misconception is that game mode reduces image quality to achieve faster response times. This is incorrect. Game mode simply disables post processing effects that smooth pixel distortion. These are often represented as actual settings on your Sony x900e or in other models of all brands of tv's, game mode disables features that are internally set to always on. The picture output will only reduce on older models that give the "choosing this option will reduce image quality" warning. Newer tv's don't reduce the image quality to achieve faster response times, the tv's faster response time is due to the fact that your tv isn't running additional post processing effects that smooth pixel distortion. Many people enjoy the post processing effects for gaming (myself included), and I find that for natural 60fps content, game mode is fine. But for most all 30fps games, except for those with any online capability......I find that input lag from post processing effects is barely noticeable when playing and I have a Sony x900e that has between 105 and 108millisecond response time depending whether it's 1080p 60hz content or 4k 60hz content, and that with all the settings turned on......(that includes live color, cinemotion set to High, and motionflow set to Smooth). Input lag and response times matter more in online play where the ability to refresh your screen to the pace of the server can be a problem with 108milliseconds of lag......that's nearly 1.5 dropped frames per second between your action and when your screen updates.....the combination of the screen lag and server/ISP lag is Insta death in all online competitive games. In games that are not played over the internet however, input lag times don't particularly carry over the same penalty. At best motion interpolation gives you the smooth motion effect of a higher framerate, dynamic contrast gives you deeper blacks and whiter whites and at worst you feel 1.5 frames per second less than you would in game mode. That's a fair trade. As a result of

I love motion interpolation on my games, but I've noticed for a game like uncharted 4 for example, I can notice the lag/delay and it just makes playing feel like I'm a step behind and hard to have precision control because of the delay

+Paul Ferrazzano thank you for your question Paul!! All 4 HDMI are HDR capable however 2 and 3 are full bandwidth meaning 4k at 60fps so I would use those for gaming. So in theory you could use 1 and 4 for a 4k bluray player if the film doesn't exceed 30fps. Hope this helps

Another great video keep up the good work for 2018! I would like to know what the Cinemotion options actually do for all types of sources (gaming, films-BD 24FPS/UHD 24FPS,films broadcast over Satellite TV via SKYQ which presumably already converts 24FPS to 50/60FPS for broadcast) and how they interact with the Motionflow settings. Having looked there seems to be a lack of information around these Sony settings. The built in help is useless! Thanks.

+Nigel Benton thank you so much Nigel , in terms of motion the overall concept is to make 24fps content run without judder on 60hz and 120hz panels. When I first saw it in 06 on my Samsung it was merely call as 120hz even though to panel was only 60hz there is excellent information and videos on rtings com that break it down far better than I can.
