Its not a camera aimed at either videographc centric or photgraphic centric. It is a hybrid camera aimed at combining technology & feature sets from the a7r+s+a9 line. For only video the s3 has most of the bases covered - including lowlight - more slow motion. The a1 gives the choice of 8k + super 35mode & a certan color science. For people who do more compositional work and want more res on the still side there is the r4. The a1 is for those who donot want seperate bodies for stills/movement/speed so in one camera one is getting a very high quality 3 in 1. As I have an 7r4 and dont need the extra video or speed specs I wll not update. I also use the 10k stills for animation in video & I think the 4k30 is excellent for bth FF & super35. However the fact that sony has brought out this technology means that when they update their a7r4 r a7iii cameras this technology will trickle down. And computer software wlll be better able to handle some of these hgh data files.

Hi Giti! Thanks you for sharing your thoghts. You made some really good points there. I agree that people who buy the A1 will likely have a need for both high quality images and video. And I'm also excited to see these features find their way to other cameras of the Alpha series. Glad i got to hear your opinion!

The video is just as good if not better than the a7siii honestly. I don’t know why a handful of people think it’s not a video camera. The thing is 7 freak’N grand for Christ sake.

Hi Joswin! The simple answer is: Both! They are both insanely capable videography cameras. If you thinking about buying one of them, I think you have to decide wether 8K is worth extra 3000$ for you. My personal recommendation would be the A7S3 if you are mainly focused due to its slightly better iso performance and the 1:1 readout. The differences are not huge, but It think the A7 is still the way to go if you are doing mainly video and dont have an unlimited budget. Hope i could help! Cheers.

the only reason I would maybe piick one up and use it over my a7siii is that it has a little more dynamic range! but in my opinion its not enough to justify the extra $3000 if im just going to use it for mainly video! but, for a one in all camera, yeah its worth it. Sony is crazy for this one! such a dope camera!

How do you expose properly with your soft box and still have great saturated led colors. For me to achieve that I have to lower the output power of my soft box to let the ambient led light be more saturated but then I have to bring up exposure with iso. Is your soft box set higher in power or lower

Hey man! Great question. I have a my Godox VL150 set to 65-75% maybe. So not full brightness. But I think what does the trick is the grid on the softbox. It helps to cut the light spill and hence doesn’t wash out the RGB. So I think it’s both, the grid and a medium bright key light. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Nah Bro. For my talking head stuff here I literally roll with the standard profile. Because turnover time is key for me. If I want to get more involved into the colors (client project or own) I use slog3 which works like a dream for me. Important to use the conversion LUT tho.

For clients only wanting super sharp Instagram promo videos, would the A1 be the better option ?

Well regarding that you can’t upload 4K video to Instagram (without it getting botched by their encoding) I think if you are only shooting video, the S3 might be the better option if you don’t have a very specific usecase that requires 8k (intense cropping etc...) or you want to shoot 4K 120 a lot, because I think the nearly 1:1 readout will give u a better image than the line skipped footage of the A1. So I don’t think for Instagram it’s worth the money. But if you do also product photos sometimes or you feel the flexibility of having multiple views in one shot is worth 3k to you, then the A1 is probably the better option.

Constructive criticism here: put something like "an educated guess", or "specs comparison" in the title, otherwise people will inevitably think you have both cameras with you and you'll be reviewing and comparing them, and they'll feel cheated. Which is likely the explanation for the bad like-to-dislike ratio of this video and possibly the low number of subscribers you have (no reason to hide that number unless it's embarrasingly low...).

For filmmakers? No way :-) 400mbit 420 in 10Bit 8K internal / 8bit external is not really what I was expecting. You will be restricted in color grading and have to stick to Cinetone.

Well you have the option of 16bit RAW over HDMI as far as I know. But you are right there some disadvantages including the 4:2:0 color subsampling. Guess we gotta wait till we have comprehensive comparisons. The embargo for footage shot with the A1 lifts at 4th I think.
