1. 8K mode has about 17ms rolling shutter. 2. 8K mode's 4K HDMI output uses nearest neighbour down-scaling, it appears sharp but at the expense of increased moire, compared to pixel-binning. 3. Canon's 4K HQ mode uses bi-linear down-scaling from 8K.

Here's something to test out: variable shutter and how to deal with flickering light sources in camera with A1's new fine-tunable shutter speed. You can test this in both photo and video mode. Currently there's not much out there on these minute but VERY IMPORTANT details. Also the new 1/400 flash sync and anti-distortion shutter might also be interesting to test out! Here's to Sony loaning you the A1 for another round of testing ;p

as a 20 year long Canon user (tons of lenses) the R5 and R6 release made me think they'll change. But, looking at how quick Sony is with firmware updates, and that they don't go and cripple functions like USB-charging, oversampled external output etc etc.... now I'm back to thinking I should probably jump ship and get me a Sony system. The other thing next to trying to avoid the huge cost of switching is ergonomics. Sony cams feel cramped in my hands.

That's great, because most film makers wouldn't record footage for two hours straight. When I recorded a music video or short movie. I record 5 - 10 minutes of footage at a time. Then we combine the footage in post production. That's overkill, when recording a movie or music video. Two hours and fourty-five minutes is good for time lapse videos. That makes this a excellent camera for multiple projects. Even low light recording. 😎👍📸🎥

Great catch on the external recording. I recently worked with a client that had pretty much this same implementation - read the sensor at one density, optionally pass through a dsp IC that has a switch to select input density and output density, where density here is resolution. If you are reading at high density it uses more power and you have oversample the output in the dsp, otherwise you can pretty much just pass through the signal. It's interesting that Sony didn't include logic to determine whether you are actually recording internally and changing the read resolution automatically - I don't have an a1 so I don't know, but I'm guessing it's no issue to start internal recording at any point while you are recording externally. They probably can't just flip the read resolution that quickly so they have to leave it as you set it. Very neat observation and video, thanks!

At the 12:23 minute mark, I had to stop and write this down, Gerald, love your channel, but to answer your question at the time stamp, and to answer some other likely ones you have regarding the topic mentioned around that time stamp.... and that is as follows. Dude, It’s Sony, they R&D and manufacture the PlayStation, and have for over 20 years. You’re pointing out that the camera doesn’t lock us out of features for using the 8K option, which is good to hear, is what turned the light bulb on for me, bc that’s the type of thinking I’ve come to be accustomed to by preferring Sony on everything for the last 20 years. When you have to figure out how to manage heating with a GPU/CPU config for mass manufacturing, they’re gonna figure it out for their cameras too I’d like to think and think I just saw in your video.... best intro out of all cinema channels.
@TechnoBabble3 жыл бұрын
I can confirm that the internal to external downsampling even works on the "consumer" level cameras like the a6400, when set to 4k internally and 1080p HDMI output it's much sharper, has less noise, and because of that wonderful old sensor also has more rolling shutter.

The oversample thing is something I also saw way back on the Panasonic G70. You could go 1080p 60 or 30 without a crop or you could live with a slight crop, set the camera to 2160p 30 and output super sharp 1080p. I then had the signal fed into a USB capture thingie. Probably one of the best 1080p webcam solutions at the time.

Mate, noticed something interesting about the dual iso for s-cinetone. Forgive me if this was mentioned previously but when going to the upper base iso (2000), you actually have to go past it to 2500 and then back to 2000 for it to clean up. Just dialing it up from the lower values up to 2000, it has the same noise as 1600 but if you go to 2500 and then dial it back, it cleans up. 👍

Hi Gerald, Actually, this shouldn't be called oversampling but sampling. What is important to know about CMOS sensors with bayer pattern is that most of a sensors actually use only a third of a resolution for each color pixel. Each photosite can actually capture only red, green or blue. bur they are mostly always considered as equivalent of a pixel as they are counted as pixels. What this mans is that if you capture with a red filter on, you will actually get 3 times less resolution. Same will happen with blue or green filter. Only blacks and whites will be capturead at 'almost' full resolution. When you are using such sensors, capturing internally at 4K, then downsizing as an output to HD, you are actually outputing an actual HD. A test to do: -Set sensor to capture at 8K, and output at 4k over HDMI. Record this in some loseless format. -Upscale recorded 4k to 8K (with some good upscaler, many upscalers don't work perfectly and instroduce some artifacts). -Make another shot in 8K and record 8K. Then compare upscaled image with original image.

Dummy batteries help prevent overheating, but the BIG downside is: if you suddenly lose power (usually because the power cord accidentally comes unplugged) the camera has zero time to save the current camera file that you've been recording. Because of this, I prefer an actual working battery augmented with USB-C power.

Great info, as always! I always like your unique, rapid fire style of scripted delivery, but I often have to rewatch sections due to the fact that I can’t seem to process the info as fast as you can deliver it. So I do like this unscripted style of delivery a bit better. It reminds me of when I was giving presentations in college. I worked hard to know my subject matter, and with that I found that the presentation flowed better and came off more natural if I created a set of short sentence bullet points rather than a full blown script.

I've heard that 4K/120 generates the most heat. I was recording with my Sony A1 indoors @ 4K/60 and it shut off within 5 minutes with the screen closed. The screen by far is the largest drawback to the A1. At its price, it should've been fully articulating and should've had a mechanism that prevents it from going in all the way to allow for optimal airflow. My main concern is how it will perform in the sun or in a hot and humid environment while recording at 8K/30 or 4K/120.
