I just purchased a used a6000 about two months ago and couldn't be happier. Thank you for your clear and concise narration. This was extremely helpful. I would prefer that the camera had 4K capability, but full HD will look okay for what I'm shooting also. I'm thinking of also getting a quality external recorder for the audio and then syncing in post as you pointed out.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Even though I continue to produce in 4K, there's actually very little demand. Yes, an external recorder will improve audio quality - if you haven't tried syncing in post, it's easier than you imagine.

@@MaartenHeilbron I mainly bought the a6000 for the 24p capability. I also have an old Panasonic TM700 that will shoot at 60fps. I bought it 10 years ago. I was disappointed when I found out that it did not have a true 23.976 setting. With the a6000, I've become addicted to shooting at 24 framed per second. I've also purchased some adapters so I can use lenses from other manufacturers.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
@@revokdaryl1 I'm not sure how that's an addiction. It's an affectation. Consider that none of the devices that your video is viewed on actually uses a 24 frame display rate, so additional frames must be added/duplicated to match to the 30 frame rate that is standard. @MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Have you thought about using a 360 camera kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGK6aoGCgbKDgdU , that would reveal all the angles (although the quality will be lower). The A6000 will not solve your wide angle needs without a wide angle lens. This is the one I use: bhpho.to/2AQdSoq
@VanlifewithAlan6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Maarten, that is very useful. I hoped I would get away with the 16 degree lense for wide angle - I have not tried it yet so I don't know if it is suitable for what I do which is showing the interior of motorhomes. I am currently using a camcorder which on video is 35 degrees but not suitable. I rather feel that with a ten degree lense I am going to get too much distortion at the edges. There is also the cost which is similar to that of the camera! I think I will go with the A6000 for my next trade fair which will be in January. I had a look at the Tascam also - I hope I can get away without using it but let's see. Thank you very much for your assistance!

Good evening (ET). I'm an aspiring cinematographer who just recently purchases the Sony a6000. I have a shoot coming up for a dance video. I was wondering what settings would you recommend me use for this shoot. To give you a little more context: The video will have different locations. 2 of them will be indoors. While one of them will be outdoors. For one of the indoor scenes, the dancers will be in a dark room, similar to that of a dance club. For the other indoor scenes, the dancers will be in an apartment with moderate natural lighting. I'd really appreciate your oppinion on this. Anyway, I totally enjoyed your video. Hope you keep on releasing more content.

Thank you, it's always nice to read kind words. The settings in this video should work. Do a custom white balance for each scene, and you will likely need an ND filter for the exteriors. Adjust the ISO to achieve the right lighting/mood for the scenes. Use a tripod. Hope this helps.

The simple reason for your continuing creation of a6000 material is that the camera remains a very capable tool, even in late 2019. I have no idea how many have been sold, however I have recommended the camera to over 20 people for a compact camera to take overseas. For some reason, they chose not to proceed with the purchase of a current Olympus Mft? All have been happy with the base model and ,like me, have no real interest in video. That said, it pays to keep an open mind and your excellent video may well move me try out the video capacity. Your videos are well paced, articulate and, most of all, constructive. Thank you.

Will have to try that soon... My question is (which caught my attention on your video) I have a SDHC card which doesnt record on XAVC-S, and I have honestly no knowladge which one will work better of youtube videos... an SDXC for XAVC-S or my SDHC to MP4? will apreciate a lot your answer! Thanks
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words, appreciated. SDXC for XAVC-S will be better.
@chacehart72866 жыл бұрын
Most basic video editors will convert the XAVC-S into MP4 straight away anyway since it’s the most convenient format for the web. If you’re mainly filming KZbin videos, MP4 will work just as well but you’ll get less data per frame. If you take that road, any card will work.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
While MP4 is the usual for output and posting, the XAVC-S codec can do a better job of capturing detail and data (as you note) while recording - it is designed as a capture format, not a distribution format. The MP4 recordings made on the A6000 are lower quality than those made with the more advanced XAVC-S codec.

@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Use manual movie mode. Ignore the meter. Shutter 1/60, Aperture F4. Then using your eye (and the histogram) turn the ISO down until the faces seem to be properly exposed, or there is space between the right side of the histogram and the edge of the histogram box. If ISO 100 is still too high, then close the iris to F8 or a higher number. Hope this helps.

It makes me very dark and takes up to 10 seconds to change back to the original color. Did I change a setting accidentally or is there a way to not have this happen? Thanks in advance!💛

Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words. You can stop exposure from adjusting by setting it manually - which means using the manual exposure mode (1/60 for shutter speed, aperture to get the depth of field you want) and then setting the ISO manually as well (so after you have the shutter and aperture set, use the ISO to set the overall exposure)

I appreciate the kind words, thanks. For KZbin production (or video in general) as long as you don't need 4K, I would take the A6000 (or in fact nearly all mirrorless cameras) over a DSLR. Shooting video with a DSLR is always a little bit of a battle.

Thanks Maarten, very informative. Your videos are among the most informative on the internet. I have 2 questions: 1. What white balance card do you use? 18% gray or 13%? 2. Do you think in the age of digital there's still room for a color meter to keep the color balance consistent between the takes? Or maybe a color checker is better?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
That is very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment. I have two answers: 1) doesn't matter - just make sure it's not over (or under) exposed, even plain white paper works. 2) well ... any old school method will work - but most cameras don't have the adjustments (or a reliable monitor/waveform/vectorscope) so you'll need to fine tune in post. Personally, I like to shoot a DSC labs chart - the chroma selfie is handy - to do colour matching.

Great video brotha, now what lense would go best for video production say for dancing recordings? && thank you!
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Sony's 28-135 cine lens ( bhpho.to/2jZWcxL ) would be my recommendation, otherwise the 16-70 crop ( bhpho.to/2o6jS5c ) or the 18-200LE ( bhpho.to/2lRZdAd ) also work well for video.
@devalah7 жыл бұрын
thank you for info Maarten, could you suggest some lense for a $500 - 600 budget for the same purpose?

Any thoughts on how to prevent the camera from readjusting the brightness of the video? The video I am shooting will automatically overexpose (making the whites too bright) or dimming the video. What settings need to be sent. Thanks for the great videos.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
If you use manual exposure mode (in the video settings) and set the ISO manually, it will not make automatic adjustments. Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.

Happy to help ... what's your dis-satisfaction? What are you trying to improve? What effect isn't working for you?
@MakeupbyVicki6 жыл бұрын
Thank you soo much for replying!! So I would like clear true to color videos so when I'm doing swatches of makeup or when applying my makeup it comes out exact. I currently have the following set up for lighting: a light pink backdrop, two t-stands with foam white boards on the left and right of me, a ring light holding my camera in front of me, and two led light boxes to the sides of the ring light. I also have 3 small track light bulbs facing my backdrop to give that halo effect on my backdrop. I have my camera setting on daylight because the auto option showed very grayish almost no color. Also the exposure is set at 0. What else do you recommend?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Have you tried capturing a custom white balance - maybe the different colour temperature of the various lights is inconsistent? It sounds like a lot of light (maybe I'm not familiar enough with the look you're going for) but when I looked at your last video, it seems to be working. Maybe a light pointed at the back of your head to give a little more separation from the background would help. If you want to make a small colour adjustment, after selecting the white balance, you can press the right side of the dial for fine tuning. Hope this helps.

Maarten Heilbron thank you again!! I just did the custom white balance and it looks like it did the job!!

Thank you Maarten. Your video is very much appreciated. I have the a6000 and use it mainly for shooting sports still shots. I would like to expand into video using this camera. I have the 16-50 kit lens, a Sony 50/1.8 O.S.S., and a samyang 12/2 manual focus lens. I have three questions. What is your preferred lens for shooting video with the a6000 and second, out of the aforementioned lenses, what would you recommend using for video? Guessing you prefer your 16-70?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, and you've guessed correctly. (Of course, that's only because I don't own the 28-135 cine lens (even just typing the name makes me salivate)). Which lens to choose - and I assume you selected them primarily for stills - is likely more dependent on the subject/scene than any arbitrary suggestion can cover. If you can shoot with a prime, if you can shoot with manual focus, those will likely yield the best results. But if you're shooting candid documentary style footage, you'll need the flexibility that the kit offers. Hope this helps.
@billmerritt71997 жыл бұрын
Thank you Maarten. Will give it a go with a prime. Not sure if I am skilled enough to use manual focus for video, but it sounds like a tripod will be my best friend to try. Appreciate your response.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that for nearly all video purposes a tripod, or a gimbel/stabilizer is essential.

Great quick tips Martin! Thank You! My only problem is that my SDXC card saves in a .mp4 format when I selected the XAVC S option. Do you know why this happens? Shouldn't it save in a higher quality format like .mov or .mpeg - Please advise
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Don't confuse the file extension (which is kind of arbitrary) with quality. There is nothing inherent to any of those extensions that denotes quality. In fact, you could change the extension of the files in any of those three and change nothing - they will continue to play in the same way. Quality is achieved with the codec (and the X-AVC-S is excellent for H.264) and the bandwidth - the XAVC-S is higher than AVC-HD.

Hi, Great video, but one question, when you shot video in A6000, after 10 minutes, the camera shuts off due to overheating. How to fix the issue.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words. That sounds like you're shooting in fairly unusual circumstances - but you may find that AVC-HD is less likely to overheat. Other semi-effective tips include keeping the batteries in a cool place and switching them out when the overheating light appears; shading the camera from direct sun; keeping the battery door open and the LCD pulled away from the body ... However, I suspect you're shooting in a very hot (30C+) and sunny location - and that most cameras will overheat under those conditions. If it's happening in ten minutes - that's a fairly extreme case.

Thanks for the kind words - I do try to keep it moving at a good pace for those with limited attention spans - and the option to replay is always available. Great suggestions on the DR-70D ... let me find a place for that in my upcoming schedule.

Thank you for this extremely helpful tutorial. I plan to use it for real estate photogrphy. With the plan to upgrade when I can afford to. Would you have any recommendations for that? Or just to play around with the ISO ? Also, i know I need to get a gimbal, but I would assume I would want to turn on the steady shot (I think that was te name0 setting too?
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
A gimbal will do far more than the steadyshot setting can. If you can plan your shoot to have your back against the windows (most of the time) that will yield the best results.

Quick question Maarten. I shoot outside a lot in bright sunlight. Should I use an ND filter to help me keep the settings? If so is there any you recommend? One of my last shoots was so bright I had to use 1/4000th of a shutter speed, which gave some strange stuttery effect when panning.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
You most definitely need an ND filter to shoot outside in sunny (and not so sunny weather), particularly if you want to keep your shutter speed at 1/60 (1/125 in a pinch - but not for action or fast pans) and your aperture low. First, lower your ISO, then close your aperture and adjust the shutter as the last resort. A 3 stop ND should work - I personally use the B+W, mostly the 3 stop, which is generally the most useful for video. You'll also need to know the filter thread diameter of your lens to select the right filter.
@elaineross93657 жыл бұрын
+Maarten Heilbron thanks for the quick reply and advice. I'll certainly look into getting this filter. :-)

Hello. Im a beginner with this camera. Do you think all u have suggested will work for a show with black background??
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you may have to make a final adjustment with manual ISO to get the exposure right. Meters find that kind of situation difficult to assess. You'll probably look like you're underexposing, but expose to get your skin tones accurate.
