As either a first mirrorless purchase, or as an upgrade to the a5100/6000/6300 this looks pretty exciting. People seemed dead set on getting an a7000 announcement and judged the a6400 based on that, instead of what they saw in front of them. It's fine to want all the bells and whistles, but Sony needs to keep their entry/mid-level stuff up to date as well.

You can hack unlimited recording, but not the better heat management (no one has managed to overheat this thing yet from what I've seen) more efficient power usage (ie longer battery life) or better autofocus. If you already have an a6300 it's still a great camera, but pretending this isn't an upgrade is silly

I've already seen a video in which they solved the overheating, they had to disassemble the camera and install a thermal pad, but let's face it, it's not worth it!

Don't do it, I bought a 6400 for a small camera to cary around and am not that impressed. Its true, Sony CAN'T make a comfortable camera for the hands to save their lives. The menu system sucks and coming from a Nikon you will hate it. Its a good Vlogging camera with the flip up screen but it sounds like thats not what your doing. If your a Nikon person like me stay with Nikon and get a Z6, the latest firmware update made a huge difference and their IBIS is great. The Z6 is also a fantastic Video Camera. I do regret buying this camera, my bad.

I understand the complaints about the screen being in the way for vlogging, and you have a very decent solution for it. But there are those of us that record ourselves with the camera on a tripod and send external audio through the jack from another source. I'm a musician that records myself playing, practicing, and doing talking head stuff (about lessons and theory for students and band members), so this camera is an amazing answer to some of the problems I have with a great price. I personally have been feeling the desire to upgrade from my a6000 and have been on the fence on going for the 6300 or 6500, but this camera just made my decision for me.

At $900, a6400 looks like a worthy consideration for a gimbal/ b-cam. My main shooter is A7iii, and so far I was considering another A7iii as the b-cam. Having seen in your review, that there’s no overheating or recording limit, I think it’s best and most economical option (so long a sit stick with Sony, which I may not).

Dr. Tu-Lam Pham I’ll probably go w a6400. It’s half the price and weight. Because I’ll use it on gimbal for videos, I don’t mind that it has no IBIS. Plus, continuous object tracking should make this perfect for gimbal use. We’ll see. I am not preordering, though. I’ll let others test the initial release.

Coming from the a6000, I think the a6400 is a wonderful upgrade as an in-between camera for the better A/F & colours before I move on to their full frame line up cuz yknow, it takes time to save up and justify dropping $2K on the A7M3 w/o lenses!

Good break down on these three models. I have seen other reviews that still criticize the colours in the Sony mirrorless cameras but often are trying to extreme settings or extreme situations. They often don't emphasize the need for proper white balancing or the importance of lighting a space with several different colour temperature light sources. I am just happy that these cameras offer the ability to things in such a compact system that I could only do with larger units a decade ago.

Use 3 a5100's for software tutorial videos. All 3 cost $700 w kit lenses. Perfect for the job ... will get a 6400 or 2 soon for different projects. Sometimes the most expensive options aren't necessarily the most profitable. Great comparison!

I like this new camera. A lot of the haters are comparing it to cameras several times the cost. And you were right on about ibis. It wasn't on 6000 or 6300, so as a 6400 it's not really missing anything unless you compare to the step up. But I really don't notice much difference even between 6300 and 6500.

I have been wanting to switch from Canon to Sony because of the 4k capability of the sony alphas, so I just did switch to Sony last December 2017 and I have been so in love with the Sony a6500 since then. BUT when I saw the news about sony releasing a new APSC camera better autofocusing than what I currently have, and even CHEAPER with a FLIP up SCREEN that I’ve been missing from my Canon 80d, I was so devastated. I moved up to the a6500 from the a6300 for it's IBIS. Thanks for the test you did here. You can clearly tell the difference between the camera that has it and the one that doesn't even though the a6500's IBIS isn't the best on the market. Any help to clean up shakey footage is a huge plus. The a6400 is still an awesome camera and I would have been pretty surprised if it included IBIS to be honest. They need to save the best goodies for their top of the line APS-C camera. Curious to see if people in the market for new go for the a6400 or the a6500 right now. I am sure the flippy screen is going to help it no doubt but I still love the a6500 and it's been one of the only cameras I have owned where my need to by something else has gone away.

I think this a6400 still has its position in the market before the real a6500's successor been announced (probably after a7siii, I guess). The features i like the most in a6400 is the better screen which won't dim during 4k recording. By the way, I really wish Sony can update a6500's firmware for better functionality.

I pulled the trigger, sold my Canon 80D and bought the Sony a6400. I don’t think Sony’s IBIS is impressive enough to give up all of the updates in trade for a better butter rate and IBIS for $300 more. I’m happy with my purchase!

Finally no recording limit without overheating. I might get this as an additional camera for my live band recordings. I had to purchase a Ninja V for my 6500 to have no recording limit since I set it and forget it on stage, and I also have a GH5 for the same reason and I use my A7RIII as my camera on the gimbal as I can choose full frame or super 35 depending on the situation. But now with the A6400 I can get that to have 3 cameras look almost identical and now use my GH5 for slow motion of the crowd or bands. :-)

I do agree, the A6400 would be perfect as a B Cam. And that idea of using that as the gimbal shot is not bad. I didn't quite think of that, but would make a lot of sense so all shots will be crispy and in focus. I plan on getting the A6400 as my secondary camera to compliment my A7III. It does not matter a lot which cam to use of these 3. The idea, the content does matter most. Be creative, first o all, and after a couple of month you’ll be able to use all these up to date/ultra last cams just make recoding process more simple with a better quality. amanieux xt3 doesn’t have ibis either. You got the same image quality, but better af. Both have tiny batteries, and the xt3 shoots a few more frames per second with better ergonomics, with some other features. The xt-3 has not that much to offer for being twice as expensive.

IMO, as someone who owns both the a6300 and a5100, the a6400 is basically a fusion of the two. I’ll admit that the new features are tempting, but I’m trying to save up for an A7iii after testing it during the last Sony Alpha Meetup ;)

A6400 is a good camara to compete against M50 Canon. Better image and who owns a A7III is a good second camera to have around. Can use lenses in both camaras. But I wish the battery would be improved like a7III. In overall with new features I think is not bad for vlog and for everyday use. Not an high end camara so we can t expect to have all for 900 dollars anyway. Great review btw
