We are all Sony fanboys here but we need to be straight with a few things. Sony (like Apple's) main strategy is to build a camera that's always missing something in order for us to buy the next model. A6400 lacks IBIS (everybody is trying to justify this act but its unacceptable in 2019) doesn't flip and rotate to the side, A6500 didn't have flip screen has missing video profiles, A7III doesnt have a flip screen and missing playmemories, none supports 4k 60fps or 1080p 240fps. You cannot find a FF model that has the 6400 features, you cannot find an APS-C model with the FF features. Last but not least the 1080p video on 6400 is mediocre. Compared with a5100 (~300$), a6300 (~500$) which both lack IBIS does not justify the price tag to buy a gimbal and add more equipment while you vlog. We want to carry less equipment. On top of that each new model has a price tag +50% compared to new models in the past. This lack of consistency in Sony models is driving us crazy and for me personally I'm not going to upgrade until I see a model that worths the money.

[ 📢 EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ] A6400 is much more better camera than A6300 & A6500 because: 1. No 30 minutes record limit: A6300 &A6500 will not get this update do the old tax issue, 2. No overheat (better image processor) like A6300/A6500, 3. Longer battery life 1 hour 30 minutes, 4. Image process from A9 = amazing fast AF better than A6300/A6500, 5. TIME LAPSE build in, 6. Full Flip Screen, 7. A6500 has got IBIS but in video in motion is very bad - you need gimbal and without it you get better price for A6400 $899 (A6400 + gimbal = a bit more than A6500 price), 8. New Hight Dynamic Range picture profile, 9. 2 New AF engines that are only in A6400 - old cameras don't have this (you need this new image processor), 10. Better build in microphone at the front - it offer very nice audio if you are not in wind area, 11. Support for higher iSO, 12. During recording screen doesn't dim. Summarizing: A6400 is better than A6300/A6500 in everthing 😊

I used to rock a Sony a5100 and a6000 for weddings and events. The a5100 recorded externally to an Atomos Ninja 2 and was powered by a portable battery with a DC out. I now use a GH5, G7, and occasionally my a6000 as a third camera for 1080p only projects. Needless to say, I like not having to rely on a ton of external accessories to make my tools work reliably. On Cinema5D they raved about the improved autofocus. What I’m seeing here is not only improved battery life, but no more record limit! Combine that with a cheap usb battery and this becomes a reliable, small package. I still have some good Sony lenses so this would be a good investment later on in the year. I’m definitely eyeballing it as a b/c cam to the GH5 and as a good gimbal camera as well.

I have the a6400 and unless if u own one. Don't hate on it just because it doesn't have IBIS. The Sony a6500 IBIS isn't that great. I use steady shot lens and it helps reduce shaky footage plus I have a zhiyun weebil lab. Unless you're making professional videos you don't need a gimbal and the a6400 has a brighter screen than the a6500 in daylight. You can make your shots steady with a tripod or even using your camera strap. As a content creator you have to use your imagination. If you are deciding which one to get it's up to you but the a6400 has not done me wrong yet. Also the auto focus is faster in the a6400. I tested it and it even holds up against the 7 series.

I have 2 quick questions for anyone that can help. When shooting 4k 30p with the a6400, since it is cropped in a little to begin with, can you still use the clear image zoom in 4k? If so, I assume it won't be able to zoom up to 200% in 4k but is it still able to zoom in a little, say up to 170% ? I need to know since I'm thinking about only getting the sigma 16mm 1.4 to start with and having a clear zoom will get me by for awhile (poor man's zoom with primes). Also, Gordon Laing mentioned that the a6400 is capable of truly powering the camera when shooting video from the USB port, not just trickle charging the battery like the a6300 and a6500. If this is true, this is huge. Can you use the standard 12v USB power banks or do you have to have a special output voltage like 8.5 or so volts? Thanks for you help.
@JetBen5556 жыл бұрын
you can do a 2x crop for sure in 4K ... but it depends at what ISO you're shooting. If you shoot at ISO100, a 2x crop will still look clean but at 1600 or above... ishhhh, I wouldnt do that. The noise will be very noticeable.
@erikpopek93576 жыл бұрын
I'm a 6500 user and I'm using Clear Image Zoom all the time! While you're in 4K mode you can punch in 2X even in UHD, which is one of the best features. Since the camera downscales the 6K sensor into a UHD image you won't notice any quality degradation in clear image zoom! However in 1080p I'm not sure if clear image zoom weakens the quality - it only works in FHD25p & FHD50p not 100p. Also touch to focus does not function in clear image mode. I've been looking at getting the 16f14 as well, it should be a crazy combo with clear image (multiple lenses in one) 😄

My original thought was to use the A6400 for video and the A6500 for photos. I am thinking about returning the A6500, getting another A6400 + Sony 35mm f.18 OSS (or the Sigma 30mm). So if I compare the both options...both round up to the same budget ..but with a6400, at the same price I'm able to get 3 different lenses ...hence way more versatile.... rather than just an a7iii with a 28 f2...since I'm a bit short on budget ..I'm trying to squeeze out as much as I can for the money...what would you recommend ..I usually shoot in pubs, DJ's, Street photography and portraits

The stars told me, that when a6700 or a7000 will come out, the price will be 1500 600$ for IBIS, I don't know, besides no IBIS in a6400, its basically better camera than a6500, overall improvement I would say Don't understand why people hating this camera for lacking the IBIS, basically typical comment is "Lack of IBIS is a no go for me, never gonna buy it" For example Nikon d850 and canon 5D Mark IV do not have IBIS as well, and people still buy them, maybe not for the video, but still
@MichaelKefeder6 жыл бұрын
I would think the a6500 successor will also have a much larger buffer for high framerate photo shooting and other technical improvements, it will not just be IBIS. However I agree with you, it'll depend on the persons needs if the $600 upgrade is worth it to them, the a6400 is a great camera already - especially for the price+size (a7000 is rumored to be A7 body sized).
@RedDeivid6 жыл бұрын
Okay, but there are more things to get into the equation, if you are a hybrid shooter, and low light performance. Nobody has said that the a6400 is supposed to be a bit worse than the a6500 on ISO performance, add to that the lack of ibis, if you are for example a street photographer or a concert photographer that's the difference between being able to shoot on a f4 lens or not. Also is the difference between vlogging with the super sharp and marvelous Sigma 16mm f1.4 or the not that worth for the money 10-18mm f4 OSS. Also, I really love the new sony colors, and I'm envious about not having them with an update to my a6500. hahahahaha The a7000/6700 should have a new sensor and a new body at least and being around 1.500€ to be a no brainer to go. Remember that Fuji is right now the king of APS-C in profesional line ups, while the a6400 is a frankenstein of the a6300, a9 and the a6500, same buffer as the a6500, same body as the 6300 same sensor as the 6x line and the new processor. If sony want to have any chance to sell any new apse they should go for a really mind-blowing camera as it was the A7III, like 60p 4k, 240p at 1080p and some new features about photography, cuz I mainly work with my a6500 for photography and I love it... but damn, I need more buttons and some options that other brands offer but sony.

Hi Max! Thanks for this video, it is excellent. Still, it is hard to choose between the two cameras without trying them on (of course) so, here I come with my doubts. I'm a beginner at making video and I am trying to choose between these two cameras. I love filming sports and for that I think the AF is extremely important but I was wondering...Is it the AF from a6500 really different from the a6400? I would require a camera to go around sport guys and focus them almost instantaneously...so does the a6500 works for me? I would prefer the a6400 because it lasts longer in battery and has a couple of new features that are really awesome (also it is cheaper), the problem is that no IBIS is killing me! I want to ask you if this is a big problem, I do not intend to vlog, just to do some cinematic footage and I was wondering if by holding it with my hands without walking (to film objects in motion, standing still), if the problem is still too big, or if it can be corrected after filming with software stabilization? Is there any other way to avoid this IBIS problem? Sorry for the large text. In a general idea, here's my type of video style: - I love filming with higher zoom (I intend to buy a 55-210mm E-mount lens for that) - I'm worried about the IBIS problem for that because it becomes heavier. Still I only intend to use that zoom with a tripod. With the use of tripod, will the IBIS still be a problem (because of wind and stuff)? - I love filming sports (go after people and standing still with a tripod) - I love filming objects in motion without the need of a tripod - just walking in the street and filming things.. - I do not intend to vlog. I hope you can help me. I know it's a lot to process but I'm really struggling on finding the best camera for me! Thank you so much for your help. I really aprecciate it!

Question for you. I currently have a A6000 and just got the 50 1.8 Sony lens, have the 16-50mm kit lens and a Rokinon 12mm for my real estate photography. I've been contemplating getting either the A6500 or now the A6400 because mostly touch focus. Do you think it is worth the upgrade to go to that or just use some money to further invest into other lenses? I also do have a gimbal as well so IBIS isn't totally necessary. Love your channel dude!

from the two the 6500 its the real value for money . IBIS do matters and the camera is actually cheaper to have. Its nice that the 6400 do not have a time limit but the battery is not trustful that will make it for a filming so long. Another thing that for me makes the a6400 not worth it is that the A7III is around 1599 in some stores so even this camera its worth the additional small jump in price from the a6xxx cameras

If anyone has any input let me know, but this is where I am at. I film weddings and I am looking for another Sony camera that acts as the 2nd angle for my main camera which is the Sony A7sii. I feel because the 2nd camera would be mounted on tripod for majority of the wedding, that if I went with the A6400, the lack of IBIS wouldn't affect me much, along with the benefit of having videos that can go over 30min, which is helpful in weddings, like Max said. I guess my overall question is how noticeable is the difference with and without IBIS between the A6400 vs A6500?

@@thebadmanreturns Just watch it! wont be able to post link but do a search for "Zhiyun Crane v2 Gimbal: Review + Test Footage" @ 11:54 Brandon Li is using a 85mm with ibis off and it's shaky as hell
@thebadmanreturns6 жыл бұрын
Robert & Racquel Malcolm All gimbal has its limitation. Brandon Li use it while running, which is very hard task for a small compact gimbal motor such as that Compact Zhiyun. (Not heavy duty motor). Its a torture for the gimbal + cam really. And he also using the gimbal in slow movement mode. Probably this is why IBIS can compensate the movement. (Kudos for Sony) that a7sii is a beast & extremely clever camera. But anyway, Sony A7Sii is a compact FF camera, I still recommend turn off your IBIS when using gimbal. This is why Sony created OSS (lens IS) in the first place. Because OSS dont make your body overheat. It much much cooler than IBIS. Very good for movie production. Video specially 4K is a very demanding task, FYI compact 4K Video Cam, for example RED.... have Fan inside their body to dissipate heat. Please dont abuse your camera & gimbal.

I've got a lot of EF glass and I'm wondering which does better with adapted EF lenses, the Canon M50 or the Sony a6400/6500?
@MaksimYuryev6 жыл бұрын
For video autofocus the EOS R will be better with Canon adapted lenses in 1080P but in 4K it doesn't use the dual pixel autofocus and crops heavily. In that case I'm not sure, Sony could possibly be better depending on the lens.
@MrPhilbautista6 жыл бұрын
@@MaksimYuryev Thanks. Based on reviews of the a6500, it'll probably be a wash as far as 4K video is concerned, unless Sony improved it in the a6400. It's a shame you didn't bring along any adapters to test the possibility but I guess you all went there without any info on what you were supposed to review (wink) (wink)
@MaksimYuryev6 жыл бұрын
@@MrPhilbautista Honestly I didn't know. The only way I know anything is checking the rumor sites which are often wrong like in this case where they said it was an a7000 leading up until right before the event. As far as checking the AF performance, it the exact same as with other Sony cameras or very similar when using an adapter. We just have more options on how to use it.

Does it have the same color science of the latest A7iii, A7R3? As it now come with the very fast processor (same as A9), that doesn't improve its IQ? Especially in low light? As comparing to A6500. If not, that's quite a surprise. Also, I would love to see if you can do another video focus of the new AF object tracking feature on both still and video shooting. The one point I wish to see is in what condition, the A6400 AF failed. And how's the success rate of tracking objects in complicated situation. I wish to see the fail moments instead of the success moments, basically, so that I know what i'm getting. Haha! Thanks!

Unless you really REALLY need IBIS right now, it makes no sense to buy an A6500. Just wait for a few months and buy the replacement - maybe called A6600? Yeah, no guarantee, but Sony being Sony you know it's coming. The Tap to Track algorithm in video seems amazingly competent and reliable. None of the 3rd gen A7 cameras are getting it. I wouldn't purchase a camera without it now. Photography being more important to me, I hope there is an APS-C Sony with a Stacked sensor on the horizon. Junior A9, like the D500 to the D5. I don't care what they charge for it - but a 32mp BSI sensor, with IBIS and new tracking AF, would be amazing for sports and wildlife.
