If it's mainly for podcasting here's how I would prioritize. Audio (except for the information and story) is priority #1. Make sure you have good audio to start, which would then lead me to encouraging you to get a decent podcasting mic. Have you seen this video I did yet? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2bGdqKbnJ2HhrM If the camera is important, then I do think the Canon m50 is a great setup that will help you learn and likely be within your budget. Keep in mind that if you are going to do a video podcast, I recommend budgeting 8 minutes of editing time for every 1 minute you are recording. You're going to want to separate the audio tracks for audio only aspects of your podcast as well as syncing up good audio from your podcasting mics that go with your video. If you haven't seen my video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZyTlJWpgtiLarc feel free to check it out. I'll be doing a more detailed one. Then I would recommend something like a handheld recorder to help with the mix and basically just a piece of hardware that can capture your audio separately. You can start with software to record into, like your computer or phone, but hardware is going to help you level up as you grow.

Sorry if it was long
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
So the Zoom lens in my kit is the 18-105: amzn.to/2RP1M8O it is however f/4, so you'll want to make sure you have good lighting. You likely wouldn't need all of that focal length up to the 105mm. The beauty about this lens is that it's a constant aperture when zooming in, so no shift in light into the sensor like some kit lenses may do. The sigma featured in this video however is sharp and great in low light (indoors). Also, I did a video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoq9faZrds2EY6s talking about how you can zoom a prime lens. The 16mm is a great wide angle option to get everyone in the shot, however the zoom capability (shown in the video) will not zoom completely in on the face...so do keep that in mind. The opening shot in that video is me at about arm's length from the camera. You'd want to be filming in 4K if possible because if you really want to just crop in on the face in post, you'd be able to do this without really losing any detail. Depending on how often you want to crop in on someone's face, it could be a somewhat simple task in post...however if you want to crop in every time someone different is talking then that may become tedious. But to reiterate you'd really want a lens that's wide enough to get the group, even if you have a second camera. Having both cameras side-by-side, but at angled in will help...Both cameras being able to capture everyone, but really having one camera (let's say on the left) being able to focus in on two people to the right side of the camera (if viewing from behind the camera), and the other focusing in on the other two on the left.

So the 70-350 could certainly fill that need, and it has the lens stabilization (OSS), which is helpful at longer focal lengths. No to mention with clear image zoom on the Sony's, you can even get a longer focal length within the camera, as long as you're filming at 4K for video you'll not really lose any quality. As far as images with clear image zoom, these will be in .jpg vs. RAW format. Not sure if you're needing something for low light as the f/4.5-6.3 could be limiting.

The 30mm is a great lens, but yes it's about a 50mm equivalent, so not wide as you're finding out. You could try a wide angle lens adapter, but in my opinion it's likely going to interfere with the image quality you'll get. In your setup is there any possibility of moving your tripod back further? There is a way to Zoom in further, but not Zoom out.

Dear Kevin, I would also really appreciate your kind help :) I am sooo in love with this prime lens and glad to see this review... my only concern is that it has no OSS. I do agree that we do not need always F1.4 as the image can be easily overexposed. I strongly believe that this lens would be also satisfy all and every needs. If you are primarily using it on a gimbal, then you are going to be fine. Balancing it on the gimbal is also no problem, but of course that depends on how much the gimbal holds. It’ll definitely help in low light. As far as zooming, so it’s a prime (fixed focal length) lens, but I assume you know that. However in 4K, you can use clear image zoom which will give you 1.5x zoom in 24fps and 2x zoom in 25fps. I did a video on that.

I am a beginner photographer. I am into portrait photos mostly. I rarely do videos. Iam planning to buy a6400 and sigma 56mm or 30mm f/1.4 but having no stabilization on neither body nor lens is bothering me since shake is more on higher focal lengths. Is it right move or not to go for no stabilization on lens &body for the photography i do?? Will it affect much having no stabilization?? If it doesn’t affect then it’s fine but if it’s not.. Should I go for other lenses with OSS or buy a6600 which is at $1200 and the sigma lenses??? I mean I will have to pay more either on lens or body for stabilization. Is there any other ways for it?
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
So the point you make is a video idea that I have. First, I will agree that stabilization for photography is more important, and mostly at longer focal lengths, however you could still notice some shake at that 56mm focal length. To the point that I want to drive home, especially now that the 6600 is dropping in price. With the added benefit of having IBIS, this allows you to make a (smaller) investment in lenses like the Sigma line up and get a really nice set of glass. Building on your point, if you wanted the 6400 and stabilization is important, those Sony OSS lenses are nice, BUT obviously more expensive, so you're right, you'd be invested in at about the same either way. Even though you'd pretty much get the same image quality because they have the same sensor, with the 6600 you'd get a couple extra benefits, specifically the longer battery life.

any experience with the a7iii? everyone praises it. I do real estate photography, a few folks use the a6400 professionally with decent results. what is your spin on those two vs each other. Thanks, great channel here...
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
I've used it, yes, but don't currently own it. Awaiting the A7Siii and potentially this new "budget" full-frame that Sony is announcing. The a7iii is a great camera, still. I've shot real estate with the a6400 with no issues. The one thing I would say, especially for photography is that IBIS or stabilized lenses will be more important here, unless you're always locked off on those shots. The Sony 10-18 would give you that wider perspective and have stabilization in it, however it's a f/4 lens, which depending on if low-light is something you're needing then that might not work. Although I use a mix of natural light and bringing in my own lights, so I assume you may have a similar workflow. Are you leaning more to a full-frame setup vs. the APS-C cameras? I mean honestly the a7iii compared to the 6400 and 6600 are very minimal as far as the output you're going to get. There are some advantages of full-frame with low-light and sometimes an overall different look, but again the 6400 has performed quite well even in low light.
@brianphuket59514 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN > good info. Thanks for the reply. I like the full frame "look" and the low-light results, I use lighting but for other than real estate, I do enjoy late evening and blue and golden hour photo's. I'm trying to avoid spending money on the camera, and the lenses (are even more)...I have a G9 that actually does work great except for the low-light, so that would rule out the 6400... I'm in no rush. just finding some good used glass for the a73 first might be the better way to go, then the camera. THanks again!
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
The G9 is a good camera, and honestly if you're wanting to hold onto that camera I'm not sure another cropped sensor camera would net you a different result, although I do have to say that the a6400 paired with the Sigma is pretty amazing in low light. If you're not in a rush, I'd say to hold on for a few because Sony is about to announce this entry level full frame camera that's supposed to be a similar body to the 6400/6600 line, however I heard the early pricing leaks that this may disappoint a few folks. Either way, I think that we might see some pricing adjustments with some of the current line up, but no guarantees there. This full frame announcement isn't supposed to be the successor to the A7iii, however I do feel that the A7IV may not start at around 2K USD, but more along the lines of 2498USD...but I suppose we'll see. Also too, the used market for A7iii's right now is on fire because many creators are set on the A7siii, so there is that.

How is the video stability on a A6400 and gimbal? Should i use warp stabilizer for videos?
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
If you’re on a gimbal, then you’re going to be fine. I’ve shot real estate with this same setup on a gimbal and it was great. The stabilizer in post may help with any micro jitters, but it should be smooth as long as you’re dialed in on that gimbal.

@@KevinRossRN Thank you for the information. I am between this lens and sony 35mm 1.8 OSS. Sony is really good with OSS but not enough wide for real estate and indoor shots. How is the stability of this Sigma 16mm when taking video in terms of focusing to human face or any product? What is the minimum focus distance?
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
So minimum distance is about 25cm, so just under 10 inches. Aside from my Sony 85mm, the Sigma 16 locks on quite well. The best I’ve experienced so far. I switch between auto and manual depending on what I’m filming. I sometimes wished I had a 12mm, but only on rare occasions. If I still did real estate I’d probably go that route for some of the shots, but the 16 has been plenty wide for most shots.
@mordavian3 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN 25 cm is very good distance. I also have watched 30mm F1.4 Sigma videos but i think this 16mm is better lens for videography. Wide angle lenses are better for compansating jitters. Big rubber focus ring is handy for manual focusing. There is no AF MF button on lens as far as i know.

So I’ve also got the 18-105 and the 16mm is such a good pairing with that lens. I’m more of a prime lens guy and just really enjoy the 24mm focal length, which of course is the close equivalent here with that crop. I’ve often used the 16 for portraits and I love the “intimacy” of it because it forces you to move closer to the subject. I also love it for establishing shots, and it’s my favorite for video, hands down. I’ve moved over to the A7IV, but I still have the 6400 and 6500 and they both have the 16mm on them.

Being that this lens doesn't have stabilization in it (as well as no stabilization in the camera) just be mindful of locking off your shots with photography....i.e. stabilizing on a tripod or equivalent. The 16mm can be great for your use case, and I would even add the 30mm to give you a (approximate) 50mm equivalent focal length. @KevinRossRN5 жыл бұрын
@@ArtByEmilyHare No macro shots with these lenses... But to ask, what type of macro are you interested in?...Meaning a subject that's not moving? Or something moving like an insect? As a reminder, since this is a crop sensor you're going to basically multiply focal length x 1.5, so the 16 is about a 24mm equivalent, so it's wide and you'll want to be close up. The 30 is almost a 50mm equivalent, so you'll be able to get that shot from further away. The least expensive macro option I can recommend is the 30mm amzn.to/2MJnJ6V This has a 1:1 magnification for macro shots, and it can also be used as a regular portrait lens... However, as far as portraits go, it's not going to be as sharp as the Sigma 30mm. But again, how often are you doing macro?

@@ArtByEmilyHare So in the talking head portion of this video, the camera is at about arm's length from my face... The 16mm is wide, so you can set it up further away if needed. The 16mm and 56mm are the better of the 3 in the sigma line up in my opinion, but the 30 is awesome. If you’re going with the 16 or any of the non stabilized lenses I’d get the gimbal, which sounds like your first choice is the one you’d go with. However if you can eventually save up for that 16, you’ll notice a difference between that and the kit lens.

It is a great lens, but it's also for APS-C bodies... You can use this lens on a full frame camera in crop mode though... What lens are you using now, or have you researched a full frame equivalent lens?
@juan-2-3765 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN Thanks for your prompt response Kevin. I'm currently using Sony FE 28-70mm F/3.5-5.6 OSS, which currently does not allow me to capture the bodies of my 2 subjects from head to toe when social dancing. Our studio size is small therefore the distance between the camera and my subjects is about 7feet. I need a lens that will allow me to still make these dance videos and avoid having to rent a larger studio. Any lense that you can suggest for Sony A7s? Let me know if you have any other questions for me based on what I've told you. Thanks again and God bless!

Not sure of your exact budget, but have you researched the Tamron lenses? Something like the 17-28: amzn.to/37I47bq Based on your needed focal length, or rather wide shot, this is wide and in some cases beats the Sony 16-35 in certain tests. However, I'm also wondering if you may need to go even wider, like say 12mm. The one concern is that you'd also want to avoid that fish eye look that can sometimes happen with certain lenses that have a focal length of 10-12mm.

I’m not sure I follow here, but it really depends on your subject. If you’re getting a wife establishing shot, which on a 16mm this would be the likely use case (if landscape), so I’m typically in a wide focus mode unless you want to use center focus depending on the subject. But I’ve also used flexible spot focus, but again, not sure if that’s answering your question.

I cant decide between this Sigma lens and the Sony 18-105mm f4 G OSS with power zoom and intern zoom... When its comes to making cinematic videos.
@KevinRossRN5 жыл бұрын
So as I replied on your other comment, I've reviewed both of these lenses. I actually did two videos, one with the a6500 and the other with the a6400. Feel free to check them out, but I will say that the 18-105, honestly, is an extremely versatile lens and was my first purchase after getting the a6500. Your workflow will just be different with the 18-105, basically because you're able to change that focal length right on the lens vs. having to move in on your subject. The f4 is what sometimes holds people back, but for 90% of my filming situations, it works great.

What do you think ? Why would i need to go for AD 200 anyway ?
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
@@immofornote1621 So personally I've never fired the built in flash on these cameras. The issue with them is that you want the ability to bounce the light in different directions... Now of course you could certainly hack something together to be able to bounce the light. Also, speaking lighting. You could also bring in some extra lighting, but that would definitely weigh you down both in carrying it and also setup and tear down. You want to be able to diffuse the light from the flash, which is another reason to get an external set up that you apply a diffuser onto. Anywhere you can get good natural light, I'd honestly just match the white balance, shoot in Raw, and edit in post. A flash (in my opinion) would be more necessary for rooms that don't have a lot of light, or if you're just not able to shoot in ideal lighting conditions. Hate for you to have to spend money you don't have to. These cameras are great in low light as long as you have a lens that can get you between f1.4 or 1.8...even to f2.0... The one thing I like about my set up though is that it does have that trigger function so that I can set the flash up as a strobe offset somewhere to the side or hidden out of the shot. I've used it more in very low light situations, like in late night banquets in rooms that have no windows.

My business partner (Co-creator) has this lens, and I have used it. As far as sharpness and auto focus, the 16mm is a bit more "tack sharp" but honestly it's not really an issue for us professionally. The auto focus is comparable. What do you think you're primary use case would be?

Well, I'm happy to help. Being a KZbinr is a lot of work and most people that have never tried it may not understand all the work that goes into it, not to mention that you're putting yourself out there to the world, which can create anxiety for many. I always remind people that when they turn that camera on and start talking, just imagine that you're talking to one person, not many. It takes practice and there's certainly nothing wrong with starting with what you have. We've all started with very basic gear (most of us that is), and then as we grow as creators we can start adding additional pieces to our kit to offer more value to the community...At least that's what I hope to do here 😉

You'll get there with the gear. You'll learn more and apply that learning as you can. The best thing is just repetition. Just keep doing it again and again. Get comfortable with your voice, with who you are. Being nervous is okay, it just means you care 😉 Just focus on talking to one person, just one. Think of your lens as the "eye" of that one person you're talking to. You've got this. I look forward to seeing how you grow.

@parker_messick4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Ross dang how does that work? I thought normally the crop sensors don’t stay as wide
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
So the sensor in the full frame is obviously bigger. So, when you place this lens over that sensor then you'll actually get a vignetting effect... You'll see the outline of the lens in your viewfinder. Now, if the camera is in crop mode, then you can get rid of that vignetting, but I believe in the A7ii you'll lose some of those megapixals and be at around 10MP, which might be okay for video, but you may not get the photo quality for photos... Depending on what you're shooting and if you want to print those photos.
