I too have shot the A6600 from day one, but I agree that it is an exercise in frustration. We know what Sony is capable of, but has chosen not to provide to us. Every few months I go through a ritual of threating to switch to Fuji, or Canon M, But it always comes back to 3 things I refuse to sacrifice. 1st battery life. Needs no explanation. Second is lens selection. Over the last couple years, between Sony, Tamron, Sigma and other third party manufacturers, not to mention Sony's new tiny FF primes, we really do have a very complete selection of very high quality lenses designed for APSC. Better than Fuji IMO. Mostly though, it's the excellent AF that I refuse to compromise on. . I'm a birder and a grandfather. so I demand fast tracking and fast, accurate eye AF. Only Sony really fills the bill for me. Come on Sony! I already have permission from my wife.

I can relate to your dilemma so well! Canon will soon release their top apsc line in RF and Sony needs to shake a leg with the next successor ! They are too concentrated on FF while apsc is great for wildlife and deserves even better ergonomics than current Sony FF line. Something like a99 and a77 but a little smaller and lighter will be appreciated. And having a faster burst rate is a must! And some lenses like Nikon 300mm f4 PF and canon 400mm f5.6 will be so welcome.

Dustin, as usual an interesting and thorough review. Many, at the time of release,were eulogist in their almost unqualified praise. Your detailed review, to my mind, really dams this, now not so new, camera with faint praise. I am not a Sony fanboy, though am delighted with the results of my a6400, particularly when paired with the value for money champ lens, for family portrait and body shots, the Sigma 56 1.4.

My review of the a6400 was more positive, mostly because the price point doesn't put it in premium range. There is arguably not $500 of additional features on the a6600, and the basic performance of the camera is identical.

Hi Dustin, The first thing I want to say is that I never meant to argue with you about the importacnce of imagine quality. The reason I support your channel is because image quality is important to me too, and I trust your opinion. In regard to the Sony a6600, I want a top of the line APS-C Sony camera, but the a6600 just had to many short comings. If I am going to buy a new camera, then I want some new features too. Mostly I want 10 bit and a faster card! Thanks, Mathew

What I would like for my A6600 is an extension grip to accomodate my pinky. Sony sold one that fits my A9 - which has its critics but actually does everything I want for that body - but what I’d like is an extension grip like the Meike extension I have for my A7R4 that incorporates an AS dovetail.

Great review, however I think Sony are wise in not adding things such as front shutter dial wheel feature for the APS-C range which I think is more of a travel/transitioning camera for people moving over to Sony. These nice to have feature upgrades you mentioned are on the full frame A7 range. I purchased an A7RIII as it is the sweet spot between having a compact APS-C and large DSLR and price is good value compared to A6600. If I purchased the APS-C I would be left wanting for an A7 feature rich camera.
@DustinAbbottTWI

I disagree on the front dial. Many alternative APS-C cameras have one. And, for many people, APS-C is not a transition platform.

Sony does that - take out a camera that changes paradigm and then increments & varies it different forms. Sony also was concentrating more on its FF line & making it more affordable & also making major shifts. The a7r4 made it redundant to have a cropsensor as the high mp included a 6600 & the a1 combined 3 cameras - also lens development was much more for the ff lineup including compact lenses. Hence they used the same sensor but brought out a lightweght tele zoom upto 350mm. Combination being significantly cheaper & lighter than a FF + sony tele. Probaby to change the sensor & processor they wld have to change the body - the fuji des not have the compact design. If they brought out a bulkier design then the compact nature of the body which appeals to many is lost.

To be honest when this came out I was kinda underwhelmed. It's not to say the a6600 is a bad camera but compared to all the improvements the FF bodies are getting it seems Sony is pulling a Canon with the a6600. I think Sony needs to put out a proper high end APS-C body with dual card slots, FF body ergonomics, vertical grip support, video features and maybe a buffer that is better then the previous camera (not worse).

I have a feeling that Sony has put APS-C line on auto pilot, and that we should not expect any significant innovations from future cameras as well. Looks like APS-C is there just to be a transition zone towards FF, at least until FF cameras have come down to sub $1000 segment as well.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
If that's true, it's unfortunate. I'm not sure that it is true, however. Sony went through a phase across their lineup with the a7RIV, a9II, and a6600 where there was little new innovation. We've seen some fresh innovating with the Alpha 1 and A7SIII, though, so I do think they are back on track.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I hope you are right. What worries me the most is the fact they didn't release any new APS-C lenses or camera bodies in almost 2 years. That's in stark contrast to what's happening in FF arena. And this last batch of cameras (like a6600) is still using an ancient 24 mp sensor, despite the fact that Fuji is using a 26 mp sensor made by Sony since 2018.
@cvbattum
@cvbattum 3 жыл бұрын
Even though they're amazing cameras, the lineup makes no sense. IMO they should drop the mid-level a6400, and price the a6600 maybe just over a thousand dollars. That leaves you with an entry level a6000/6100 and an enthusiast a6500/6600. If you want something more you should just move to Sony full-frame. If you're really set on getting pro-enthusiast APS-C, there's always Fuji. That would make a lot more sense.

@networm64 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly to the point! All the down sides you mention were the exact reasons it couldn't convince me to upgrade from my a6500. Form factor is the main issue with sony upper apcs line. A bigger grip is not enough when this camera is paired with bigger lenses, a taller body, bigger viewfinder, and Sony please the damn front dial! These are essential to differentiate top of the line from enter level. And why should a6600 have the same 11fps as a6000 while double the price? Apsc cameras are great for wildlife giving the more reach, but body needs to gain a bit more ergnomy to handle the big lenses better. And the buffer got worse to a6500? Oh I can't forgive this one Sony! That's silly! I need at least 20fps and A1 like performance in video and AF(except for the 8k) for the coming pro apsc if it's ever going to come though! I dn't care even if it will be 2 grands. Just give me all you can! It's not that hard to do, just remember what you did with a77! Which still has the best rear LCD function of any brands!

As of Sept 3, 2021, the new Sony ZV camera is released. I think that their APS-C line should focus on this customer base looking to get into basic video/photo. You can pretty much get rid of the a6xxx series because of the ZV series, as well as the full frame a7 cameras that can go into APS-C mode. As an a6600 user, I am pretty disappointed overall with the camera after a year. One card slot, no 4K 60p, and lack of a 3rd dial for Sony’s “Premium” APS-C camera is sad. Fuji has established itself as the king of this sensor size. The only thing I love about the a6600 is the real time eye tracking autofocus.

I agree with many of your points. The problem (for me) is that Sony’s strengths in key areas are so much greater than Fuji in those areas. Sony’s focus in general is just so much better (particularly for video), and many of Fuji’s lenses need updating

"Placeholder" may be the way those who passed on the A6600 thought about it when it debuted. But if they were expecting a major refresh soon after the announcement of the A6600 in 2019, then they may have been disappointed again since nothing has happened. Plenty of rumors but still nothing. @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes, Sony APS-C will continue to be the gateway into the E-Mount system for those new to ILC. But the only lenses Sony released in 2021 were FE so I don't think we can say that is an indication of the health of, or Sony's commitment to, their APS-C line. Third party lens makers seem to have confidence in Sony APS-C as Sigma, Tamron, Samyang and Viltrox have filled out the lens lineup nicely with AF lenses. Sony's ML APS-C competitors have announced at least one APS-C body since Sony announced the A6600 22 months ago. Fujifilm has announced 4. 🤔 My take is that Sony will continue to underwhelm with their APS-C bodies in the near term. And maybe miss the mark entirely as they release a more videocentric APS-C body. But I still have hope, albeit a small one, that Sony does release a photocentric APS-C body, housed in an A7 sized body with a new class leading sensor and IBIS. Maybe in 2023? 😅

I have both a5100 and a6600 and have to say there is a difference in picture quality, especially in higher ISOs. It is not all about the sensor, I think a6600 is a step beyond a5100 in image quality. As it is stated "The sensor features a unique design that utilizes thin copper wiring, enhanced circuit processing, and an enhanced front-end LSI to boost light-gathering abilities, reduce noise, and increase readout speeds to benefit video recording." I see it when I compare higher ISO files. But compared to a6400 (I had a year ago) I think a6600 it's the same IQ. But a5100 is amazing for its price, that's why I bought it and use it as a webcam mostly with 16 2.8 (better than the kit lens 16-50 at 16mm 3.5) :).

Thanks. Advanced cameras like the R3, A1, A9 and the coming Z9 are for a niche of pros. But Sony has technologies to create an advanced APSC mirrorless version of the Nikon D500, Canon 7D (DSLR). I am wondering if Canon and Nikon, even they are pushing FF for pros, will come out with advanced APSC cameras in the RF and Z mounts. Nikon probably yes, they have APSC bodies already, Zfc, Z50. But Canon would have to make a decision with the EF-M system. Sony has the tech already, probably pros sport and wildlife will be happy to have an extra APSC pro Sony body in their bag for more reach. For sur they will prefer a bigger body with possibility to add a battery grip. Let wait and see.

Sent off my first comment prematurely! As ! prior to purchasing a6400, had and remain very happy with the capabilities of a a6000 which was given to me, second hand. This remains a significantly underestimated image taking machine. Am extremely unclear as to what you are seeking from the Sony apsc body roadmap. I should make it clear that I am a hobbyist pure and simple. The battery, for me, is not " liberating". Had several spares from the a6000 and never ran out of power. You , in part, ptraise the sensor and then appear to criticise, any significant "improvement". What are you seeking that Sony provide? You, essentially, opine this to be an excellent camera,yet strongly criticise Sony for not offering more. Can't you give the company something of a hint. Cost is also an issue. A significantly enhanced replacement would seemingly put the price in A73 territory. I would be interested in your response.

Hi Robert. This camera should have had: deeper buffers and probably at least a slightly faster burst rate, better video performance up and including 4K60, but at least 4K30 without a crop factor, an improved viewfinder with higher resolution, better resolution on the LCD screen (and possibly an articulating screen), a front dial for control. As for the sensor - it is a very good sensor (which I praised). But just because Ford had a very good motor in the 50's doesn't mean that they should always just use the same motor. Other companies are innovating with higher resolution and better performance. Sony should be doing the same. Fuji and Canon both offer higher resolution in their APS-C sensors. A Fuji X-T3 or X-T4 has most of what I have mentioned here, and is still cheaper than the a73.

Imagine if Fuji used this sensor in the X-T5. I'd be so happy! The artifacts from the x-trans sensors are very annoying and they COULD just stop using them. Those sensors don't contribute anything positive that justifies their existence, as far as I can tell.

I too am less than blown away by the touted “advantages” of X-trans.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah it definitely seems like gimmick. A thing to put on the spec sheet. Presumably they feel like it sells cameras, since they continue using them, but surly they’ve seen all the complaints about it, right? There are even Fujifilm specific versions of editing software just because of this sensor design. It’s just so frustrating because the cameras (X-T2 and X-T3 for me) are AMAZING! I’ve had many different cameras over the years and Fuji makes the best ones for me. I just have to put up with an annoying sensor.

The a6500 is a much better buy. It retains the important 6600 advantages such as image stabilization while keeping the occasionally useful popup flash. Sony boxed themselves in with this overpriced release. I don't know where they go from here with apsc. I would like them to release an a6500 clone with updated features at a much lower price, sort of an a6400 with image stabilization.

I agree on many points here save one huge one - the autofocus system that premiered in the a6400 is head and shoulders above the one in the a6500.

Just build this sensor in an A7 body or leave aps-c altogether.

That could work...at least as a little higher range option for those who prefer better ergonomics over compactness.
