While not cheap, it certainly is the less expensive of other full frame cameras on the market. With a new retro looking design, 3 custom buttons and a ton of manual and setting options, the Sony A7 is designed for enthusiasts and above. But how does that full frame sensor and tons of control affect your images? Check out the video for the details.

I think even a used alpha A7 may be out of my price range. :( How would you stack the fujifilm XT20 against an A6300 in terms of picture quality. Video doesn't interest me. I think it's gonna come down to those two camers for me.

To think that the A7 was the beginning of Mirrorless domination and shifted the camera industry to mirrorless cameras now. Bravo to Sony for heavily investing in Mirrorless tech to bring us some of the best cameras today in 2022 as we are now in the Golden Age of Mirrorless. 10 years from now, I wonder how far will the next gen-models push the limits of Mirrorless tech.

It does not come down to the lenses. You can put an adapter on this camera and and put some of the best lenses in the world on it. Contax G series 45mm F2, konica 57mm F1.2, and just about anything from Leica. Focus peaking and an infinite selection of lenses, and its just $400 more than the new olympus. This camera is definitely a contender.

I wouldn't consider those e-mount lens as part of the collection, considering this is a FF camera. Putting a crop lens on it kind of defeats the whole purpose in my opinion. You can use those sure, but I'm sure he's referring to the availability of native lens for it and I agree with him.

It is true that emount lenses are not the best, but they fit, and it is said specifically that none of the amount or emount fit, which is not true, and frankly leaves an expression of a reviewer, who has not prepared enough, and some might think that the rest of the review is bogus too!

Well I have the a7 and the portion of the 24 mpix sensor it is using is only 10 mpix, so in terms of detail it is a bit limited. I know that the a7r model makes a 16 mpix picture, so it should be at least as good as the sony nex 6! I would definately advice you to look into the 35 f2.8 or a Leica adapter and some awsome Leica glass! Happy new year!

I think what you mean is that if you put an e-mount lens made for a crop-frame camera on that body then part of the sensor will not see light, so in effect you need lenses that are designed for a full-frame sensor. So, any e-mount lens will fit but only those designed to be used with a full-frame sensor are going to work correctly.

It seems lacking in performance and lens options considering the range of shooting situations we may have to shoot. It boasts on it's full frame IQ but is it really practical for getting those spontaneous shots that capture a now moment, a surprise smile, as in a wedding situation? I would love to see how much shutter lag there is compared to a DSLR in a side by side comparison shooting fun action shots.

Most kit zoom lenses are in the F3.5-F5.6 range and many manage to take great photos with that lens. Why would anyone want to stick a much larger F2.8 zoom on the full frame A7 that is smaller than most APS-C DSLRs. Just go up a stop or two on the iso to match the F2.8 lens exposure.

Quick question for you or anyone who has had experience with this. I currently own an A77 and am purchasing an A7R. I have quite a bit of A mount glass, so the LAEA4 is a must. My question is this: should I continue to invest in A mount lenses? The A77 has some important features that are superior to at A7R and I will definitely continue to use it for certain shooting conditions and as a backup in my bag. I will be getting a standard zoom E mount so I'm not stuck on the adaptor, and will continue to purchase E mount lenses, but it is important to maximize my flexibility, especially since I already own a lot of great A mount lenses. Is it worth it to continue buying a few key A mount lenses to fill out my range across both camera bodies or would I be better off using that money for E mount glass?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Marosvari If autofocus performance is critical for you, you really need to use native FE lenses with the A7R for best results. The adapter has it's own AF system built in but the performance of that is not going to equal what the camera can produce with native lenses.

Actually, my Lav mic battery was dead for some reason so this is the Tascam DR07 Recorder which also has an onboard mic. It records on to SD cards so I synced it later in post. Usually I plug my Lav mic into this recorder or my Tascam DR-60D recorder (these recorders have better pre-amps than my DSLRs so you have less floor noise) and I sync them up in post.

May i ask you. Which lens is better the kit lens with 28-70 or the Zeiss with 24-70? Is there any huge difference that argues the price of the Zeiss?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 жыл бұрын
The big difference is the aperture. I'm not a fan of variable aperture lenses because any time you zoom, the aperture changes which will throw off your settings and is especially bad if you shoot video. I would go with the Sony 24-70 f4. It gives you stabilization, a great range, and constant f4 exposure across the range: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008126-REG/sony_sel2470z_vario_tessar_t_fe_24_70mm.html/BI/19484/KBID/11716/kw/SO24704/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xSO24704

The A7 offers much better photo and video quality for sure but good lenses will be vastly more expensive. Unfortunately the A7 autofocus speed isn't great so it is not as good for shooting moving objects with autofocus and the 70D is more ergonomically friendly if you need to make quick settings changes.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would probably skip the A7 at this point. It was a great camera and you still get that amazing sensor but the camera and focusing is a tad slow for some use, video has been improved in the recent cameras, and the A7 lenses are very expensive. The A7RII is great if you can afford it but in the price range closer to $1200, the A6300 and 80D are better overall choice for most uses. Each have their own benefits so it is difficult to chose between them. My gut would be to go with the 80D. It is a great overall camera, is tried and true, and overall has very few faults. The a6300 is a bit more fickle with issues in ergonomics, complicated menus/controls, no touch screen, limited battery life, overheating with video... though it certainly produces better quality video and slightly better quality images if you know what you are doing. Whether that is worth it to you is a personal choice but unless you are a Sony enthusiast/owner or familiar with their cameras, I would probably go with the 80D

I am considering this camera, but if I buy it, it won't be until I can get the 35 f2.8 and the 55 f1.8 along with it, I think in January the lenses will be available, along with the 24/70 f4,,,,, I am leaning more toward the A7 then A7r just because of the autofocus, and like you said, I think the 2nd generation will be even better, and maybe the A7r will also have the same autofocus and get a touch screen, and if it was articulating touch screen even better, but that's atleast a year away, but personally I like this small mirrorless direction, and I could picture myself selling my Canon gear a couple of years from now when more of the Sony glass is available, also from what I hear, the A7 auto focus works better with adapted glass, but what I really wish is that Canon would come out with a mirrorless mark lll as small as this A7, and with a new FF sensor that's like the 70D, and with an articulating touch screen, small popup flash like an XE2, and a view finder as good as the Olympus EM1, witch is even better than the A7's, I am really hoping that this A7 wakes up Canon and Nikon

I do slightly prefer the image quality on the A7. It has great dynamic range and overall has more pleasing shadows and blacks. However, you can't beat the speed and efficiency of a DSLR. My advice would be if you are looking to photograph live events where speed and ergonomics are important, go for the 6D. If you are looking for a camera with just awesome picture quality for maybe landscape, family, portraits...go with the Sony A7. The A7 is also much more portable if you need that. The Nikon D610 is also a great camera that offers a bit more than the 6D in this category, especially for photographers.

@learningcameras

That's a crazy price! I would only recommend it if you shoot landscapes or as a 2nd backup camera. This camera had some big weaknesses despite the amazing image quality. Otherwise the A7III is such a massive upgrade, it's hard to go wrong. Sony knocked it out of the park with that release

so let me get this straight. you can use any e mount lens but it will crop the sensor if it is not FE? will it tamper with the image quality?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
Correct. Yes, technically the quality will be worse because it's no longer a full frame camera since you are only using the center portion of the lens. You will have less megapixels in the resulting image as well....I believe it's 16MP when using non FE lenses.

Hi Guys I am so torn about which camera to get I am thinking the Sony A7 either or Sony A6000, or the Nikon D5500. I will be primarily doing Landscape and also really enjoy wildlife so will probably doing a lot of that too, What would you guys reccomend between the a7 and a6000 and d5500
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Mills I would say that the Nikon D7100 would be a great tool for you over the A6000. It has a similar sensor but autofocus will be much faster. The Sony A7 also had a weak AF system though the image quality (especially for landscapes) will be slightly better due to the full frame sensor. I still think the Nikon D7100 might be the best choice for you though: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/927106-REG/nikon_d7100_dslr_camera_body.html/BI/19484/KBID/11716/kw/NID7100/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xNID7100or the Nikon D610 if you can afford it and want the full frame sensor: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008264-REG/nikon_d_610_digital_slr_body.html/BI/19484/KBID/11716/kw/NID610/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xNID610 Those two will handle wildlife way better than the Sony A7

Very nice review,thanks for doing this! Have you ever use the Fujifilm X-T1? IF yes,which one you recommend? i dont know too much on edit pics such as Photoshop or lightroom,so is the original JPEG from the a7 + CZ lenses good?? Thank you very much!
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 жыл бұрын
I have not used the new X-T1 yet but I have used most of the other Fuji X series cameras and have reviewed most of them. The results from the Fuji cameras are amazing and I love the look and feel to them. The Fuji also has the lowest noise I have ever seen from a APS-C sensor. By biggest issue right now for Fuji is lens selection. You only have a few (expensive) choices of Fuji glass while Sony does have plenty more options. The only issue with the Sony is you will need the adapter to use most of them. But given that the Fuji is much cheaper, I think it will be compelling option. I hope to be reviewing it shortly actually.

No problem. Pulled the RAW file into lightroom and boosted the shadows and lowered the highlights...that's it. This Sony camera has tons of detail in the shadows and highlights which is awesome. On some cameras, you can't do this and you will see tons of grain and other crap going on if you boost the shadows too much.

This review is really bad, there arent 3 customizable buttons, there are 9, also E mount lenses WILL work with a7 despite them being crop size, wont watch more but there might be much more missinformation.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 жыл бұрын
There are 3 custom buttons although yes, many other button actions can be changed but doing so will mean that the previous function does not work. The A7 does include 3 additional custom buttons though which is awesome and way more than most cameras offer. I guess my definition of lenses working is a bit different to you. Using the camera as a full frame 24MP body is only possible using full frame lenses. The other lenses CAN work but will limit the cameras ability. I can't see anyone (and would not recommend) purchasing a lens for this camera that does not allow it to work at its full ability but I'm sure the crop mode is great for those upgrading from cropped sensor e mount cameras who have not yet updated all their lenses. This is why I don't mention much on the crop mode because I don't want someone to purchase a lens only to find out the camera now only works in crop mode at reduced resolution with a crop factor on the lenses.

Great video. Do you know if my old, 35mm film camera lenses (Minolta, Sigma, Rokkor) will fit the a7? Is there an adapter for them? Will they result in any vignetting if used? Will the full sensor be available with them.? Thanks. BTW I like Winter Garden.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, any old film camera lenses as long as they are full frame Sony A mount will work but you will need an adapter as this camera uses a new mount. Sony does sell the adapter. You will be manual focus only for those film lenses but you should not get any extra vignetting. However, I personally have not tried it yet

I've been honestly wanting to make the switch to Mirrorless for awhile. I used to borrow my grandma's Fuji-Flim XT-30 before I bought myself a DSLR. To keep it short basically I'm blind in my left eye so I'm REALLY near sighted. I can never really see through the view finder on a DSLR so I've had to teach myself how to get the results purely based on knowing my settings an hoping the AF system does its job. My thought is that a Mirrorless setup would be easier for me to see out of well simply because of the EFV that would make it so I can see the results of my shot before I take it. is the A7 a steal for the price its at now?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 7 жыл бұрын
Hey. The A7 is definitely a steal for what it offers but there are still some shortcomings. Primarily the AF system can be slow...mostly when shooting moving subjects. The ergonomics are also not my favorite. But the image quality is still great and for a full frame camera, it is a great price. The EVF would definitely show you the results before taking the image. I've never thought about the near sighted aspect but I guess you are right and since the screen is close to your eye, it would be better instead of a DSLR which is mirrors showing you the object through the lens which is far away. Curious to hear how that helps.

+Adrian Ethan No. The full frame Sigma for Sony lenses are "A mount" which Sony uses for the A99 and A77 cameras and this camera uses an "E Mount" but requires a full frame lens so the lens is designated as an "FE" lens which stands for full frame E mount. I don't think anyone other than Sony makes FE lenses yet.

hi Id like to know something about sony A7 I hear so many great comments and how great this camera is. i just got one and I have some concerns regarding live view and viewfinder When taking pictures, the image through the viewfinder or lcd screen is fuzzy/grainy. Especially in darker environments. It's not as bad in bright light conditions. The pictures themselves are perfect and exactly what you'd expect even when viewed on the lcd screen of the camera could yo tell me if this is just on A7 could it be coz of lens or do i have to change my settings thank you Show less
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
This will be the case on any camera when using the LCD screen or Electronic viewfinder. In lower light, the image in the camera is dark so it will brighten the image for the LCD screen and viewfinder so you can see better through the viewfinder or on the screen. This process is basically increasing the gain so the image is not as good. That is the benefit to an optical viewfinder in a DSLR.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would get the A7 unless you are shooting professionally in a time critical environment. Image wise, the A7 is better. Handling wise, the A99 is better where you might be able to change the focus point faster for example. But the A7 is also smaller and more portable so I would take the A7 as a personal camera for image quality and portability. If you shoot weddings or something along those lines than the A99 would be a better fit.

@angelisone
@angelisone 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can do that once you get the ATG AL-EA4, ATG Sony LA-EA4+ or Sony LA-EA Adapter. The main drawbacks, just like the Sony SLT-A99: 1. Loud shutter 2. Eat battery like no tomorrow, that's why they market the vertical grip. 3. No live-view when shooting tethered to a computer. 4. Delayed flash which is useless when using wireless IR/Radio flash. 5. Can not save on camera when tethered to pc on stills. 6. Pure junk when tethered pc doing videos because one can not see videos. Many are buying this camera so they can use ATG/Leica/Hasselblad/Nikon/Red/Samyang lenses. Leica, Canon, Nikon and Olympus are pissed. Many Nikon DF are going back to dealers because it can not do video. The world now want something light to carry & take same images like all those outdated 35mm slr/35mm dslrs.

I'm selling my nikon d7000 and I can't decide between sony a7 and d7100. I shoot landscapes mostly (and I like travel) and a smaller lighter camera could be useful, but I don't want to make compromise in image quality. And that 28-70 looks awful compare to sigma 17-50/2.8. Not to mention I own a Sigma 10-20 and I love the ultra wide long exposure landscape shots. Oh and there's the HDR and Sony A7's bracketing problem (the forums are full of angry a7 owners). Should I sell all my stuff and buy a Sony A7 + 28-70 OR should I only buy a Nikon D7100 and keep my lenses?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
2fufi2 The quality of the A7 is amazing...way better than the D7100. That said, as you noticed the kit lenses are not great and decent glass will cost you big time for the A7 at over $1200 for most good f4 zooms (which still isn't that wide an aperture. This is the biggest weakness for Sony, that and the ergonomics are not as good as the D7100. However, the A7 would stack up quality wise very similar to the Nikon D610 or D750 so you might look at picking that up over the D7100. The D610 may cost a bit more but lenses would be cheaper than the A7 (though still more than the D7100 since it is full frame). For the money, the D7100 is great but full frame cameras from Nikon and Sony do bring extra dynamic range and better low light performance if you can handle the additional cost for glass. I think Sony has a great future based on their current tech but the lens cost and limited apertures of the FE lenses make it less appealing to me. I would steer you first to the Nikon D610 or D750 and 2nd to the D7100 based on what you described. Hope that helps. Here is a link to a great sale on the D610: goo.gl/UeWTfi Hope that helps.
@2fufi2
@2fufi2 9 жыл бұрын
Wow! Today I just thought that maybe I should buy a d610. :D I'm a bit confused though. D610 has only 9 cross type focus points. Do you think it's af could be worse than A7's af? And d610 lacks so many features. (I think I complain too much :D) BTW, thank you for your answer! It was very helpful, what's more I found your review of the Sony a7 the most helpful on the internet so far! I'm glad I found it! I read and watched all kind of reviews and tests from the bigger sites to the small blogs, but none of them helped as much as you did. Learningcameras is in my bookmarks now ;) I'll check the site from time to time for sure.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 жыл бұрын
2fufi2 Awesome, glad the review has been helpful! I think you are being a little picky on the D610. I would not worry about the 9 cross type focus points (though I do wish they were more spread out). You really only need those for low contrast objects in motion which honestly is a fraction of the shots I take and generally I'm using a center cross type focus point anyway for moving subjects. Mirrorless cameras like the A7's have only now started to get decent AF (they use different tech) and even then, most are not great for tracking objects anyway and even worse in low light. The focus on the D610 would definitely be better than the A7, especially for tracking. Sure, the D610 does lack some features (though most are in the D750) but overall it gives you the image quality you were after from the A7 with the ergonomics of the D7100 and slightly cheaper lenses (and more lens options) than the A7 as well. Not as small and light as the A7 but pretty close.

Awesome, Thanks! Any reason you would not consider something like the Nikon D750? It should offer you everything you need and is still usable at 6400 ISO. The Sony A7 and A7s would not be my first choices. The A7s is a bit better for video than photos and it is pretty low resolution. It will look similar to a Nikon D750 below 6400ISO and will only be massively better above 6400 ISO. The Canon 5D3 is good but overdue for an upgrade so I would not consider it unless you got a deal on a used one. My top choice for you would be the Nikon D750 given you have been a Nikon shooter in the past as well. It offers a full frame great quality sensor, and is still reasonably small and light with great features.

Thanks a lot Dan. I am reconsidering my choice now. The only thing that is stopping me to upgrade in nikon d750 is the colours in still. I love the sony skin tones and colour. But do you think the D750 will do the job for landscape colours and proper skin tones? Thank you again. :)
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 жыл бұрын
Nikon does a great job with landscapes. They tend to go a bit more green/yellow for my taste on skin tones but plenty of high end photographers use Nikon for portraits. It's easily corrected in post if you don't like their colors anyway. I personally think Sony is very similar color wise to Nikon so I definitely wouldn't care between the 2. Canon goes a bit more magenta in the skin tones which I personally prefer but again, I wouldn't chose a camera system based on those minor tonal differences that are really just a matter of taste.
