As many other people have been doing, I've made the switch from Canon to Sony mirrorless cameras over the past few months and wanted to touch on a few super basic things and differences between the 3 models for people who know nothing about Sony cameras. What features do you like most on the Sony that Canon's don't have???

Currently planning on switching from my 5D Mark II to a Sony A7 II as I have a vast array of FD lenses from the film days. I'm in love with the A7R II but in an attempt to be a reasonable man I think I'll go with the A7 II. It's really hard to justify spending twice as much on the A7R II.

i felt the same way so i got the A7II first then the A7RII later. I was completely satisfied with the A7II and the main reason I got the R was because the 4k video matched with my A7SII way better. Other than that, if youre just shooting photos, you should be completely satisfied with the A7II. Theyre so cheap now too for what it offers, its hard to say no ha. thanks for watching!

Best comparison between the three A7 mark 2 variants. Really comprehensive. Worst music ever though ;-). I only have one question, is there any noticeable difference between A7ii and A7sii regarding video quality on 1080p? Edit : Oh, I saw you answered that question a bit earlier "Since the A7SII has a 4k sensor, even when you shoot with it in 1080p, its way sharper than the A7II since its downsizing a 4K image to 1080". Thanks a lot !

Hi there! nice video as I am wondering which one of the two cameras actually - a7ii or a7rii - I'm gonna buy in the very next future. The questions I have are : Is the EVF different or same on both bodies ? AF speed seems to be better on the a7rii, compared to a7ii, can you confirm that ? Speaking about AF capabilities, is the difference kind a huge then or rather tiny ? What would you say ? By the way I'm essentially a landscape / architecture photographer. Some weddings too, from times to times. And more rarely, some portraits. That's it. No sport, no action, no street photography or so. Thank you for answering my questions and helping me in my future choice!
@TagTeamDream
@TagTeamDream 7 жыл бұрын
Emmanuel Luc-Streble the EVF is the same! The main difference In the cameras is the 4K video and the megapixels. The a7ii is 24 mp and the a7rii is 42mp. I use the a7ii and it has been able to do everything I need in land scape portrait and architecture. I just miss the 4K video

Just came across this video, Some up to date info ('23). I am a stills photographer and started with the A7S in '14 in Oct captured the lunar eclipse using a Canon Film lens using an adapter and was perfect. One thing to understand, back in the beginning '14 software was bad and expensive the joy then was Capture One cost $30 for Sony, today even Lr is magic. The A7s model is great for stills I went A7S because it did bracketing 5 @ 3EV (even today you will not find a program that can merge the images) 5 @ +/- 2EV is really great for sunsets/rise and blue hour for stars and dark sides of objects bright and detailed like driftwood. I got the A7R2 in '17 and with the IBIS I was able to Bracket 3 @ +/- 2EV hand held in Antelope Canyon while others were on sticks doing long exposures and at the Grand Canyon the same settings at night got the deep part and the stars on the south rim sidewalk one thing to understand NR turns off when bracketing so you get hot and dead pixels but are saved with merging they go away. The A7s did better than the A7Rii at night BUT the A7Rii can hold its own. there are apps that process in camera at sony playmemories apps www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/ that make things easier like Digital Filter that will allow the capture of the Milky Way over a lit City but the site will close in 2025. I highly recommend any model and they will outperform most other brand even today,other brands just went mirrorless and are playing catch up you will not find. For a book on the models go to Brian Smith website to get a pdf or look on line for the books "You need a book to know Everything you can do". Just have fun!

Hey great video man! I'm a Sony fan myself, I currently use the RX100 M4 mostly for it portability factor but would definitely consider upgrading to one of their full frame options in a heartbeat. Sony action cameras are pretty excellent as well, they're one of the only companies at the moment to offer full onboard stereo recording, which is actually quite decent and their built-in image stabilization is also why I prefer their action cameras for active video, like vlogging and sports. Keep up the great work man, a video/photo comparison between the 3 you mentioned might be a really cool video. Peace.

Entry level? Most affordable? $1200 for a used body is an average salary in Russia per half a year! Ok, our people are cheaper by the way, but a real FF that can be affordable is 5D Or a used A7 which costs 2 times of that, but some great cheap soviet m39 m42 lenses can be used

I do not agree about what you said about Sony A7S. "I definitely don't recommend it for photos" is quite inappropriate. That camera is great for photography. Especially, the ISO performance. I've got one and have taken great photos with it. The rest of the review, pretty great. But to label the Sony A7S as "not recommended" for photography is just unfair. Not everything is about megapixels either!

Which will be the best low light lenses for the cheaper camera like A7ii? For cinematic effect and also for studio photos. One more question please, I can not decide, which one to purchase: a6500 or a7ii
@austinpaz2174

if youre really on a budget, the Sony 50mm 1.8 is a good low light option.it depends if you were doing mostly photo or video to decide which camera i would recommend. overall I like the A7II more since its full frame but the video quality isn't as crisp as the a6500 since it shoots 4k.

I'm about to purchase my first mirrorless camera and I'm on a budget. My choice is sitting between the Sony a6300 and the a7II. I have found both brand new for a very similar price (75 bucks difference. Now I'm really confused, because I don´t know which one to pick. I'm interested in film and photo, but mainly on the photo side. I would like have a nice film option for family events and filming some skateboarding clips. the focus lies more on sports photography. Also I have tons of Nikkor lenses from the 70's which I will use with an adapter. Could you help me out? what would you pick? Is the a7II still worth the money (1100€ with a kit lens) in 2018?
@austinpaz2174
@austinpaz2174 6 жыл бұрын
i would definitely go with the A7II. The only thing that the A6300 really has over the A7II is 4k recording and maybe a slightly better AF but I've used the A7II a bunch and that AF on that thing is still really really good. The full frame of the A7II is well worth the buy over the A6300. Also, in my opinion, the A6300 doesnt feel good in the hands. It has a weird form to it.

I'm a bit worried. I just bought the A7II for video and photo (both essential to me) and I just heard about the moire issue, I haven't tested yet! I don't know if I just made the biggest mistake ever or if it is not a really big issue. I have the Sony 16-35mm and the Sony 55mm 1.8 and I'm wondering if that can be fixed with those lenses and maybe with firmware updates. What do you think?
@austinpaz2174
@austinpaz2174 7 жыл бұрын
lenses dont really fix moire and alliasing, thats more about the sensor than anything. ive noticed it too but it was never a deal breaker for me. I guess it all depends on what youre shooting. Overall image quality is way more important to me.

David, I use vintage lenses from the 1970s or so. I never use Auto anything even back when I had the Sony PD150 DVCam. I am using a Canon 2000D (T7) which I have yet to try out on video. If I am experimenting with a camera I will not want to go expensive. Maybe after I have a feel for these. A7ii goes for around $700 to $800 these days. I am interested in using my Canon FL 55mm f1.2 at some point which these three cameras can do. I found another KZbin video that talks all about the Canon FL 55mm f1.2 adapter. I was able to find a A7Rii for $880. So I went for it.

@austinpaz2174

pretty much any of Sonys mirrorless cameras have what youre looking for, it just all depends on your budget at that point. the a6300 and a6500 are supposed to be amazing and have top notch video quality. In some ways better than their full framed A7 line. the a6000/7300/6500 line might be a bit better for vlogging too since theyre smaller cameras than the full framed ones
@mkazmi
@mkazmi 7 жыл бұрын
Austin Paz thanks for the help. I noticed that the a6000 line doesn't have a flip screen. Do you think a flip screen will be necessary for vlogging? I'm pretty much looking for an all around camera that isn't too big and that I can use for fashion and street photography, short films, skits, and vlogging. Of course the lens plays a big part as well.
@austinpaz2174
@austinpaz2174 7 жыл бұрын
I've never done any vlogging myself but it seems that a flip screen definitely comes in handy for that. If youre using a super wide lens, it might not be as crucial but it all depends on what youre shooting. I know a lot of people are using the Sony RX100 lines for vloggins since its compact and has a flip screen so you may also want to look into that as well.

Sony A7 II VS Sony A7R II - What is the R for?

So I just got the A7Sii last night and I feel that I am already regretting it after reading numerous reviews and comparisons. I am 90% stills/10% video. I shoot primarily at conventions with very low light, but I also shoot candid portraits and travel landscape photos. I want to be able to print my photos at any sue I want. Should I return the A7Sii and get the A7Rii?I got the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 lens and the Sony FE 28mm F2 lens. Would I be able to use these with the A7Rii?Any help is appreciated.

if youre doing primarily photos then def go with the A7RII. it beats the S in almost every way when it comes to stills and does 90% of what the S can do in video

+Austin Paz Thanks for the reply. I just exchanged the A7Sii for the A7Rii. I think it will definitely be more what I'm looking for. Now I just have to decide on lenses! I have the Sony FE 55mm and FE 28mm, but I'm trying to figure out a decent zoom lens. Thinking about the 24-70 and 70-300mm.

+Austin Paz yeah the cost of the Sony lenses is outrageous! The thing I comfort myself with is that I have the A6000 too so I can use the lenses on both just with different results. I think I'm going to go with the 90mm macro and maybe eventually a 24-70.

I have been shooting Nikon 7100. Then i get the chance to be 2nd shooter in a wedding. And when it comes to reception i was struggling with low light i wanted to just trow my camera and just borrow one to my friend. Now i am ready to get new body and i am torn between A7ii and A6500. I was told to go Full frame for better IQ and low light. But the a6500 features is just so tempting. Anyway i hope you can help me decide. I dont shoot video. Just portraits, landscape, events and occasional wedding.

Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful. Can you talk more about how well the focusing works with the EF metabone's adapter - particularly, whether the auto focusing is suitable for shooting events, like weddings? I'm so stuck on the fence on whether I should stick with Canon (heavily invested in Canon gear) or switch to a new system, like Sony. Please help!!
@austinpaz2174

+TetsusaigaDrgn As far as EF adapters, the Metabones is the only one I've used that works really well. The AF with the Metabones only works really well though on Sony cameras which use phase detectoin AF (A7RII, A7II). The AF sucks on the A7SII since it only has contrast detection AF. I would confidently shoot a wedding with either the A7RII or A7II with the Metabones adapter though, you would have no problem. However, there are a few more focusing options if you use native Sony E mount lenses. I havent had a chance to try any yet but i heard the eye detection AF works great and so does continuous AF while shooting video. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

the A7RII is mindblowing, especially compared to the 60D. When i first looked at the files on my computer, I felt like I struck gold with the A7RII, ha. the resolution is super sharp compared to my old 6D and definitely from a 60D. Its a little weird getting used to a new system but its well worth it in my opinion.

The a7rii is the superior camera in all fashions. It's has a really high megapixel count around 42.4 which makes it great for landscapes. The more pixels aren't as important for portraits or wedding photos but it's extra pixels so you cant go wrong. The autofocus is superior to the other two cameras. So since your shooting weddings, maybe you do the flower toss shots that wedding photographers do a lot then that would come in handy with back button focus. It performs better at high iso which can come in handy for after parties or late evenings if you ever shoot those. I think the a7rii is one of the best cameras out today period. It takes the best of the a7ii and the a7s and combines them. However, it's pricey. With a lens you would spend close to 4000 dollars. But since you shoot canon I'm sure you have their lenses, but you would need an adaptor for that so it would be 3500. Which is the exact price for the new canon 5d mark 4 btw. If you bought the a7ii you would still get great wedding photos and stellar portraits with a small gap in image quality and a lack of 4k video. and you would have plenty money left to get a really nice lens. So basically it comes down to how much money you have lol. In my opinion the a7rii is the way to go if you have no problem blowing that kind of money. Just thought I would put my opinion out there.

the AF isnt AMAZING with the E mount to EF adapters, even the metabones. especially since you may be shooting weddings with potentially low light, you might be a bit let down compared to your 5d. when i started buying native sony lenses, thats when i really noticed how good the AF was for photos.

A7 series are full frame. You may get smaller lighter camera, but the lenses are also massive sometimes heavier than the DSLR counterparts, so the portability advantage of the system is actually marginal if you get full frame sony. Sony APS-C is where you get the real portability, system-wise.

Which one is better for Night time lapses, I moved from the Canon80D to Sony A7 (rubbish for the night lapses), and now I cant choose which one is better particular for Milky Way lapses... Before that video I was definitely for a king of low light A7Sii, but now I'm disappointed. Also the price is big deal for me A7sii I can buy slightly used for $2000 AUS, A7Rii -$2500Aus and A7II almost brand new only for $900Aus (I'm from Australia). My lapses are Ok and the lens is Samyang 14/2.8 but still not perfect, lot of noise even on 3200 ISO ((( and I decide to buy A7S ii which could help me with the noise problem.

astro photography is tough. Im not big on it myself, but if youre looking to shoot higher ISOs then the A7SII is definintely the way to go. For night time lapses, you would probably want to favor more of a slower shutter than higher iso anyway. Im sure you can get clean shots at around 400-800iso and just have a longer shutter for a few seconds and it would be fine.

The A7RIIs 4k sensor is wayyyyy sharper and cleaner than the A7II. Also, there is a rumor going around that the A7RIII is coming out soon. If you can, I'd say hold out a little bit longer and see if they do because that way the A7RII will be cheaper most likely.

@ledovejpatek8803

If you really want that 4K footage, the Sony is not for you beacause of the overheating issues. Every Sony 4K camera overheats. The A7/A7ii video is not the best also. Stick with your 70d, it's still not that bad. Then get something like a 5D mark IV whenever it comes out. It will be sooner than you might think... If you're on a budget, you'll be able to get the 5D mark iii for a really good price after the release of the 5D4.
@austinpaz2174
@austinpaz2174 8 жыл бұрын
i have of course heard of all the overheating issues with the a7rII in 4k over long periods but the a7SII doesnt overheat. I've never had that issue and Ive asked a few other people who have the camera also and they never had that issue either. Unless youre shooting events, the a7rII overheating isnt really an issue since youre not usually rolling for 20+ mins at a time. Ive used my a7rII shooting 4k for a few shoots and it never over heated on me. I agree with the a7II 1080p quality compared to the 70d though, the canon is a bit sharper for 1080 there

Yea.. i think so too. I'm probably gonna get the a7sII used when it becomes cheaper. I hope the overheating issue is not as bad as my 70D! It stops my recording ever 5 seconds when it does overheats. It occurs almost every time I want to shoot.

There's a big problem with the Sony A7RII - it can't track to save it's life and before anyone comments, I own the A7RII and it's the greatest camera I have ever used - except when it comes to tracking. Sony G lenses suffer from focus shifting i.e. the focus acquired when the lens is wide open shifts when the lens closes to a smaller preset aperture. So they "solved" this issue, via a firmware update, by changing the focusing system. It now acquires a basic lock wide open, then closes to the preset aperture, refocuses and then tries to track. Unfortunately at f8 the awesome phase detection AF disables and the camera hunts like you wouldn't believe! I was using a 200mm lens at a fashion show and at under 30 feet the area of focus is less than 3 feet using f8. So to ensure I got the clothing sharp I set the aperture at f8 and my lens hunted and missed the focus time and time again! Remember, the models were walking at less than 5mph and it could even track that speed. I switched to my other telephotos, all top lenses and it happened with each and every one of them. Sony are aware of the problem and have been for over a year since they have been inundated with compaints about this.The majority of owners have requested a firmware update allowing a choice of focusing either wide open or closed - and they've done nothing. Don't believe me, try it and see what happens or if you haven't the time go on the net and look it up, you'll find lots of complaints on the subject. So if you want an awesome camera for motionless subjects get the A7RII but if you shoot subjects that move, forget it and buy a DSLR. One last thought... I was considering buying the new A9 and then I realised if Sony have wrecked the A7RII with this via the firmware what's to stop them doing it with the A9? Be wary buying either of them. In the meantime I and many thousands of others are stuck with a camera that's fine as long as what we shoot is basically dead and not moving until Sony get their finger out and fix the problem. One unhappy A7RII owner...
@austinpaz2174
@austinpaz2174 7 жыл бұрын
ive recently been using the AF tracking for video more lately but mostly with my 16-35 on a gimbal and it tracks really well for that. i havent tried it at telephoto lengths but I can imagine it struggling more with that. i dont even bother trying AF with non E mount lenses since its so bad but with native glass, ive usually had great results. Ive also changed my AF tracking speed to medium instead of fast which is what it comes out of the box as. when its at a medium speed, it doesnt shift back and forth so quickly, its more of a smoother transition.

Thanks for your reply. In a wide angle situation I'm it reacts exactly as you say. Unfortunately for me and in particular studio users (who mainly use apertures of f8 and smaller) we are stuck. The A7RII truly is a wonderful camera but I can't use it for about 80% of my photography. Sony should have made it clear that the firmware was going to do this. If they correct the firmware then I will go back to loving this camera again, it was like my baby...but at the moment I hate picking it up.... Oh dear

I laughed when I read your "next generation" reply (which is totally true of course) since I didn't intend to buy a new camera for some time...at £2500 to £4500 each I think my wife would kill me, ha ha! Seriously, isn't it sad we have to spend so much for an update that shouldn't have been needed? I bought the A7RII, invested would be a better phrase as I wanted a camera that would last years and to me the A7RII is the ultimate camera only to find out that Sony have made ineffective for me. Fashion shoots and studio work, my favourite photography are now gone! I am devastated. I have posted something in the Sony Community in the hope someone there sees it and does something. It has affected so many photographers! Keep your fingers crossed for me although I think Sony will remove my post fast!

+Austin Paz On that note as well...which would you recommend from the A7S Mark I, and the A7 II (for video)? Both are similarly priced.

+Andrew Blewski im talking all bout the mark 2s since thats what I have used. I have no experience with the first generation A7 cameras so I cant say anything about them except whats on paper. As far as the Mark 2s though, its a fact that 1080p on the A7RII and A7SII are sharper than the A7II because youre using a 4k sensor to downsize to 1080 so theres more detail in each frame. I've heard about this before and after I used them I can 100% agree with that. The A7II still has great quality video but its just not as good as the R and S.
