very nice and thorough comparison mike. personally the a7III looks the best for me. Sony really did a great job with the a7III, in nearly every aspect they jumped ahead by several generations just by going from the a7II to the a7III.

Hey Mike! Thanks so much for the detailed review, yet I STILL can't decide. The 42MP is appealing, but don't know if it is really necessary for me. I do mostly astrophotography (including 4k videos of the moon because I love being able to crop in 50%) and travel/landscape photo and video. It seems like the a7iii would be better for travel videos because of the more advanced autofocus, but I am also going to get a GoPro Hero7, so would honestly probably use that most for travel videos. I just can't decide!
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
I'd say you've already made your mind up! 😁 If you're not sure if you will need 42mp or not, chances are you won't. The a7iii is a fantastic camera and like you say, the autofocus is great..especially with the new firmware 3.0 update. The batteries are fantastic, I only have 2 for the a7iii whereas I have about 6 for the a7rii. I also almost exclusively film with the a7iii over the a7rii as it is a much better camera for video...the experience is just simpler and I can get the shot quicker. That's my extra 2 cents anyway!! I hope that helps!!

Even I still using A7r mark 1 and still doing good job, the main thing is the one behind camera and what makes you worth to buy things for your jobs, the one i invest for now is the lens, i think its the most important things in my opinion.

Definitely Nicolas, One of my friends has the canon 600d and has had it for years and his photographs are amazing! The newer cameras jut make the process more efficient.....when you know how to use them properly. On professional portrait shoots eye af is amazing and it gives a much higher percentage of useable images, although if it came to it, I’d still be happy using my old film camera from back in the 90s! 😆 It’s all about what’s 6 inches behind the camera! 👍

Great video and thanks for the raw files. It was the RAW files that made the difference for me. Even though the files on the A7Rii are larger, when cropped in, the details on the A7iii were clearer at high ISO's. Even at ISO 800, there was a noticeable difference. I'm more into astrophotography and low light landscapes where high ISO's are common and I think the A7iii would be a better fit for me. Thanks again.

Hello! As a newbie looking to upgrade, I am wanting to switch from my Nikon5200 to a full frame mirrorless. Its my understanding that Sony is the way to go! My primary use will be shooting concerts. All aspects of show photography- small, intimate, low lit venues and bigger shows with ever changing production lighting. My husband is a musician and I started shooting him as a hobby. I've come to really love it but am absolutely limited with what I can capture from my current kit. Which of the a7rii and a7iii would be the better choice? Keep in mind I do also have a 4 year old and a pup that I like to take portraits of as well. Cheers!
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
You’d be right in thinking that. The Sony is a fantastic camera. I’d go for the a7iii as it’s better at higher ISO’s which gives you an advantage in low light conditions. Also the battery size and silent shooting will be a great advantage for the conditions you’ll be shooting in. Also if you have the budget, the 70-200mm 2.8 is an amazing lens for concerts. You get the reach and in small venues you can get really up-close and personal. The downside is that it’s SO expensive! I hope that helps.
@travisparker45446 жыл бұрын
That helped immensely! Thank you for the lens recommendation. I was just comparing that one to a 24-70 2.8. Would you still say the 70-200?@@mikesphotography

No worries. Glad I could help. 😁 Both lenses are great, it just depends the size of venues that you will mostly be shooting at. It might be worth hiring both of them to see what you’d prefer.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I recently bought, second hand, the A7Rii as it is such a bargain it can't be passed along. Also, its bigger pixel count allows using of E mount (APS-C) lenses in crop mode, still leaving enough for editing. My question is about the extra 1EV in dynamic range, the A7iii provides and how much of a difference it makes for landscape photography, over the advantage of the larger pixel count the A7rii gives for same application. Thanks
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Felice! The extra megapixel count definitely helps, and having the aps-c mode with 20megapixels is a big bonus....almost like having two cameras in one! I haven’t really noticed the increase in DR. I just bracket my shots when needed and that puts the dynamic range through the roof on either camera! I have found myself grabbing the a7rii more and more these days, especially for landscapes.

In my country the price difference between both cameras are quite big as I just checked from my local market. A7III used with very low shutter count is around USD 1,500 and A7R II used with around 20,000 shutter count is around USD 980. Frankly I have decided to go with the A7R II used as I'm more towards landscape and casual Shooter.

@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tanner, I used to shoot with the canon 6d, it is great for Astro and landscape and is now selling for about $750. That with a samyang 14mm would get you some great Astro and landscape shots. Then the 24-105mm isn’t too expensive as an every day lens......and for wildlife, the tamron 70-300mm is a fantastic budget telephoto lens. If you want something smaller, maybe try the Sony a6000 series.....there is a camera for most budgets in that range. 👍
@tannergates98626 жыл бұрын
Mike Smith Thank you for the reply. Do you think the 6d would be a better choice over the 7ii?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
No worries Tanner. It depends really on what you prefer. I think they get fairly similar results as long as you have decent lenses. If you prefer the mirrorless system, go for the a7ii, if you like the dslr system, go for the 6d....I haven’t used the a7ii so it would be worth checking people’s results on line from each camera before making a decision. All cameras these days are fantastic so I think you’d get great results with either. 👍

Also, I work in public health and currently don’t get paid to do photography.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, it is a tricky one. If you predominantly shoot landscapes and macro, I'd go for the a7rii with some extension tubes to get even closer for macro. If you're looking to get into sports or wildlife, then I'd go for the 200-600mm. It is an expensive hobby isn't it!! Mike Smith Thanks for the advice. I have the Sigma 70mm macro on the way and have been using extension tubes in the meantime. I figured at least with the A7Rii I’d get that extra resolution for macro and landscapes and will have extra money for the 200-600mm rather than buy a new a7iii or a7riii.

It all depends on the final use of the photos. I've used the sony a6000 and the 10-18mm successfully for online images. When bracketed and stacked, it can give a really good dynamic range. With the a7rii the crop mode would be like the normal mode in the a6500. In the A7iii the crop mode is worse than the a6500. The best way to think of it is that the a7r cameras have both a full frame and a crop frame camera option because of that high megapixel count. Does that make sense?

I have them both and I may confess that I reach more and more to the A7R2. I shoot mostly environmental portraits, landscapes and street photo. When I arrive home and put my sd card into my 5k iMac, the photos from a 42 mp Sony illuminated sensor is simply amazing and the possibility to having 18,5 mp files in APS-C mode can be enough reason for me to prioritize A7R2 against A7III. For an application like that, they will both do a great job. If you aren’t printing the images really big, get the a7iii. The focussing system is better and as it only was released this year it will be good for years to come. As you are on a tight budget, I’d get that and the 50mm 1.8 native Sony lens.

If you're on a budget, go for the cheaper one. There are plenty of A7rii cameras on the second hand market now so you should be able to pick up a bargain if you look hard enough. Also the A7ii isn't really worth it as it has minimal features compared to the a7iii. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Both are great, but the A7iii has a slight advantage. I prefer the colours out of it and also if you use native lenses, the autofocus is better. Also battery life is a lot better; the smaller one in the A7rii are a pain and you'll find yourself constantly changing them when shooting video. ...also, if you can afford it...the A7siii looks like a fantastic camera for video and it comes out in September. 😁👍

The a7rii is a formidable photography camera with lots of resolution. If you're a stills shooter and you don't need high burst rates, and don't mind having a few spare batteries, then it's a bargain at that price. 👍

Thank you for response and also such a great review video. I also have a few canon lenses that I would like to use with sigma mc-11 adapter. You briefly touched on it on the video that a7iii is better on adapted lenses. Does Rii fail to autofocus with adapted canon lenses ? I have canon 85mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, 10-18mm etc.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
No worries, glad to help. Unfortunately the a7rii isn't brilliant at all with autofocusing with an adapted lens. I've struggled through a few shoots with the a7rii and the canon 70-200mm f2.8 with the mc-11... but it wasn't much fun. If you're only going to use adapted lenses and you need good autofocus, it might be worth getting the a7iii. 👍

Thanks very much! I'd say get the A7iii. If you want to do weddings, you want to be focussing on the craziness happening around you, and not worrying about how much battery power you have. And to do weddings seriously, you should look at getting two bodies and two lenses. If you have one with a 16-35mm and the second with a 70-200mm (and a 24-70mm in a bag), you'll pretty much have every focal length you'll ever need and you'll be able to switch from super wide to telephoto in an instant. Thanks for watching 😁👍

@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ahmed, I’m good thanks, I hope you are good too. I’d say get the 85mm 1.8 for portraits. The 90mm is good but more specialised for macro work. You won’t get the background out of focus as much as with the 85mm due to the smaller maximum aperture. The 90 is also much bigger than the 85 so for practical purposes I’d go with the smaller 85mm. I hope that helps.
@michaelwhite13225 жыл бұрын
FWIW, I've been VERY pleased with portraits from the 85mm f1.8. I've never used the 90mm. Instead, I have a Pentax 100mm f2.8 macro that works very well as my macro lens. I've used it as a manual lens and its works great. The autofocus is nice to have for portraits, however, hence the 85mm. Eye Autofocus is the best thing since sliced bread!

i use A7R2 as i am using a fair bit of manual lens, so battery is not an issue, normally i use at most 2 battery for a full day of shooting. And i like the Super 35 APSC function, which turn my prime lens into 2 different focal lengths lens. i don't shoot video, so it doesn't worry me too much with the weak video function, after all it is an aged camera. Hi there! This was the perfect video for me as I needed to compare these two cameras as I need an upgrade. I currently shoot with the canon 5diii and it is really showing its age, especially in low light. The question I would like to ask is which camera would you recommend. I will be moving over from canon and will be using canon lenses, so I initially thought the a7iii would be best, however I mainly shoot landscapes and could really benefit from the greater megapixel count. Which would you say is the better option overall? I still feel that the a7iii is the better choice but just wish I could afford the a7riii and have all the above. Thanks in advance.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Hi Simeon, I'm glad my video has helped! Id still say go for the A7iii. It works much better with the Canon lenses and you can then slowly change your lenses over if you feel the need to. Just make sure you get the mc-11 sigma adapter as that seems to be the best and most reliable. As for the megapixels, if you've come from the 5diii, the A7iii will give you a very similar sized image. I hope that helps 👍

Great video Mike! I’m coming over from the micro 4/3 world, so either way there will be noticeable changes for me. But I am doing mainly studio work, headshot, fashion and glamour. From the sound of it I think I would benefit from the larger sensor of the AR2, for photography. Would you agree?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
It depends on how quickly you shoot. If you’re slow and controlled, then the rii would be perfect. If you fire through lots of shots and run fast paced high energy shoots, the a7iii might be better. Do you have any camera hire shops near you so you could try them both?

Hye Ryan, Out of those three, I'd go with the A7iii. It has a great focussing system, the battery is big enough that you won't have to worry about it and the megapixel count is good, but not too big that your computer might slow down a bit with it. Another one to think about is the A7C. That is basically the A7iii in a smaller body, but with a better focussing system ... although because it is still pretty new, you will pay a bit more for it. Hey Mike, I'm looking at upgrading from my Sony A6000 to an A7R II. I shoot photos primarily so video is not really a concern of mine. I mostly shoot portraits, landscape, and cars (both rolling and stills) but I rarely go over the medium shooting speed on the a6000 which I'm guessing is around 7 or 8 shots per second. I have also been able to find the A7R II for around $800 to $900 USD which is very affordable. I guess my only real concern is if the A7R II will be able to keep up with new tech because I wouldn't be upgrading for a few years.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
If you're used to the a6000, the a7rii will be very familiar to you. The frame rate in the fast mode is at about 5 shots per second so that would be a bit slower, but you would see quite an increase in quality and in the ability to crop in and getting closer in lightroom to check the focus and details. I still use my a7rii today, especially for portraits and landscape and I think it'll be still good in years to come. You could compare it to the new tech but if you look at the images it can produce, I think it would be hard to tell the difference. 👍

I do event photography, Though I use it for both photo and video in events I sometimes have to use a gimbal, and for the next 30 mins, I may have to take pictures using flash. For that, I keep changing lenses and flash again and again! I plan to buy an a7Rii for a photo camera so I can use an a7iv for video. Am I too late in 2023 to get an a7rii for a photo camera or do you suggest the newer model a7riii/a7iii/a7riv/a7c? please advise Ps: my event photos are not used to print
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much!! I'd say to get either the A7iii or the A7C as a second camera. These are both much better than the A7rii especially if you are not printing your photos. And thinking about it, the A7iii is good, but if you are used to the A74, the A7C would be closer with the better focussing system, but then there are sacrifices with the lack of custom buttons and a good viewfinder. I shoot video with the A7C and photography with the A74 and it is a really good combo to have. Also for video, I use the gyro stabilisation and this has meant I no longer need to take a gimbal with me which you get in the A7C and the A74. This isn't so good in low light situations, but if you are shooting with a decent amount of light, it works surprisingly well. All of my walking shots in my latest videos are shot like this, without a gimbal. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁👍

When I go travelling I do take my a7rii over the a7iii for those very reasons. I have the 10-18mm which is my compact wide angle and then the higher mp count is great for landscapes and having the option of cropping in.

Which one is usable for wedding photography ?
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
They both are. It just depends, if you need the extra megapixels get the a7rii, if not, get the a7iii.

Hey Mike, love the comparison video. I'm wondering if you can confirm how is the auto focus on the a7rII with 3rd party lenses?
@mikesphotography2 жыл бұрын
I'd avoid the a7rii if you rely on autofocusing with third party lenses. I did a couple of corporate photoshoots with the Canon 70-200 f2.8 mkii and the sigma MC-11 and it was hard work ... I basically had to go back to manual focussing ... and hitting the eye for that made it a very hard days work.

Hey mike great video i just subscribed... which one is better for cityscapes. I love heights so I climb towers..and I will like to pictures up there
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
They’d both be great for that. If you want higher megapixels, go for the a7rii, if you need a fraction better low light and great battery life, go for the a7iii...to be honest you wouldn’t go far wrong with either camera.

@@mikesphotography thanks mike im kinda leaning towards the a7iii because like you said its better all around. 2 questions.. do you really think the extra megapixel makes a difference? And what's a good lens to start with for night cityscapes
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
The extra megapixel doesn’t really make that much difference. I’ve printed images from both cameras and they’ve come out great. 👍

And for a lens for night cityscapes...I have the batis 25mm which is fantastic quality...if you need wider, I’d suggest the 15mm Laowa. If you’re on a budget, the 14mm samyang is good.

Hi Mike. Great video and pleased to subscribe. Currently debating between the two. I only use a Galaxy Tab A tablet for editing using Photoshop Express to download raw files. Do you think that I would have any issues in downloading the 42mp raw images please?
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
No worries David, and thanks for subscribing! That's a good question...I don't know how the galaxy would handle them, the best bet is to download the files I have in the link in the description and see how it handles them. 👍

I've been shooting with a nikon d3300 and have started to hit my limits and would really like a system with better glass available. I just don't know which one, I shoot fine art portraits and I also shoot street so I'm really stuck between the two. I could use the higher mp but I could also very well use the low light and better auto focus. What's your opinion?
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
I’d say go with the a7iii, it’s a much newer camera and the focussing is much better. To be honest, you would enjoy both, but with the changes the a7iii has the advantage. 👍

I am a owner of an SLT-A77 camera and want to upgrade it by getting a full frame. But all these cameras doesn't have GPS anymore! Is this a joke or what? I found a new A7R II (1400 EUR), but the no-GPS capability and the low FPS (5/sec) demoralized me.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi, So I'm guessing there hasn't been much of a demand for GPS in cameras and that is why it hasn't been continued...I think there is a way of doing it by linking the camera to your phone, but that seems a little too long winded to be connecting it up every time you take a shot. The low burst rate in the A7rii is quite poor compared to other cameras that are about today. I always grab my A7iii when shooting sports or fast moving subjects. Thanks for watching. 👍

Hi Mike, thanks for the comparisons between the two, But I want ask for between Sony A7rii and Canon 90D whic one batter ? I should choose Sony A7rii or Canon 90D right? Thank you so much!
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
No worries. It all depends on what you want it for...if you're a hobbyist photographer just getting into photography and want relatively cheap lenses, the 90D is probably the way to go. If you're into landscape photography and/or portraits and want to make big prints form them, the A7rii would be a better bet... On the video side of things, if you want to shoot great quality videos of other people, the A7rii would be better whereas if you're going to shoot vlog style videos for youtube the 90D would be better with its flippy screen. I hope that helps. 👍
