the first full frame camera with a global shutter was the Contax N, way back in 2002 (it was developed in 2000, but it took awhile to come to market). The first camera with a global shutter, in theory, was developed by Kodak in the 1970’s. You see, CCD sensors, which were common before CMOS, were technically global shutter sensors. They became outdated before advancements in camera technology allowed photographers to take advantage of that aspect of them, but, technically speaking, global shutters are far from new, they’re only new to CMOS. Actually, Panasonic made a global shutter CMOS sensor back in 2018; however, the technology is newly coming to the market just now.

I’ve heard everyone talk about it but, it’s not quite clear. Everyone says you are shooting and if you want to go to 120 fps, go to function button. To be clear, is that then the shutter button or do you have to hold that AND the shutter or it that function just to 120fps on or off? I’m just not quite clear. It seems every time I hear someone talk about, it sounds different. Do you know the answer to clear this up? Thanks
@BucNasty32

So you should add say 20 frames a second, and then you press the C5 button and that’s automatically burst it up to 120 frames for the second so then when you’re shooting, you can switch to fast mode and then back to normal. It just is a much better option so you’re not just spamming 120 frames every time you shoot
@BucNasty32
@BucNasty32 6 ай бұрын
So it’s like a boost button, so when you press the shadow while holding the boost button, but the C5 it then speeds it up to 120 and then when you release pressing the C5, but I still pressing the shutter it goes back to say you know 20 frames a second
@michaelsurratt9593

@@BucNasty32 so basically a “toggle”? Whatever you are shooting at 10, 20, 30, 60, tap it to toggle into 120. Then when you are ready tap it again to “toggle” back to whatever you were at? That is what makes the most sense. Far be it from me to tell anyone “you don’t “need” _______ “ but, that would fill those cards FAST.
@TheCameraStoreTV

It's more of a power boost button. You press it at the same time as the shutter. It's in a good position so it feels quite natural to do that. When you release it, it will go back to the slower frame rate you were shooting before. @@michaelsurratt9593

I can't wait until this technology filters down to less expensive cameras. I am not sure how Nikon or Canon can release a new camera without global shutter now. It sounds like 24 MP is the limit of this technology currently. The Olympics is this summer, so if the other brands have anything in the works we ought to see them soon. As for the A9iii, I don't need 120 fps and base ISO of 250 is a deal breaker. How would you ever shoot a panning blur without ND filters?

Rumors say that the R52 and R1 will NOT have Global shutter. Main reason I think is because they will be at least 45 megapixels. I could imagine the next generation of R3 will have it. Can’t wait for the tech to trickle down as well!
@alphajam1

To be fair, there isn't a rolling shutter in the Z8 or Z9 and it will autofocus, calculate exposure and color balance while shooting . If your shooting inside why do you need a high shutter with powerful Pro Photo strobes? I heard that it takes 11-60 seconds to clear the shutter after shooting 120 frames a second and that's including pre-release. As a sports photographer or journalist for newswire why do you need 120 fps in raw? Birders will still want 45 megapixels so they can crop.

Nope. The Z9 has a 5ms readout time top to bottom, so yes, even the Z9 has rolling shutter. Mast mechanical shutters are 1-2ms, so they also have a small amount of rolling shutter

I'm sorry that you have emotional issues when someone has legitimate questions on the new tech. Remember Sony is a media company, Sony Global Entertainment, and is a consumer electronics company. They know how to hype things and market their products. I hear their marketing packets all o er KZbin the past couple of days. The past thirty years I've had Sony products. And their customer service sucks. And I never believed anything that I hear and only half of what I see. Let me know when your Sony camera breaks and you call them for service.

I suppose for pros, 120 frames per second could be attractive. Good if you want to capture liquid splash photos. But honestly, how much difference is there in two images of a basketball player taking a shot which are taken 1/120 second apart? Not that much, and you'll have an awful lot of images to sort through and select.

All of this is answered in Sony’s release video. 1. You’ll be able to play back the files as a video clip for easy extraction of the frames you want 2. They added a new custom button so you can easily go from a lower frame rate, to 120 fps without taking your finger off the shutter 3. 120fps is for those crucial moments (think the moment a baseball hits a bat or when a football touches a receivers gloves, etc.) that you don’t want to miss. It’s not about the differences between frames 1/120 and 2/120. It’s about not missing the perfect shot. That being said, this camera is absolutely for professional sports shooters, and even then it’s for the professionals who KNOW they need it. 20fps is even well beyond what most people need

Seriously. I feel like all these “influencers” live in some sort of weird camera tech bubble. I get that it’s useful, but how useful is it for the majority of people? How many people do constant wildlife or sports photography? I jumped off the tech bandwagon years ago and focused on taking photos. I’ve never been more satisfied and fulfilled with my output. I occasionally take a peak into what the current state of the art is and a global shutter and extremely high speed flash sync is “game changing”? It’s cool and I’m not downplaying the tech, but the actual application for everyone seems relatively limited. It’s really bizarre how breathless everyone is.

It’s a $6,000 camera marketed at people who shoot professionally in sports and commercial scenarios. It isn’t meant for “most people” Why get offended that something exists and gets media coverage just because its not something that you personally need?
@perilthecat
@perilthecat 6 ай бұрын
It’s a game changer because it allows for things that were never possible before. Unless you’re a professional photographer it’s not going to be something that you need, but anyone who does flash in places with high amounts of ambient light is immediately seeing the value here, with unlimited sync speeds. Anyone who does video with high movement and fast action is immediately seeing the value here. This is a working pro’s camera, not a camera for hobby photographers.

@@perilthecat No one's arguing that. The issue is that literally every single camera reviewer is frothing at the mouth over this stuff, when the big announcements (global shutter, high speed sync) are all things we knew we'd eventually see. It also (by your own admission) has little effect on the mainstream crowd or even pro-sumers. Is it great? Yes. But it's evolutionary, not revolutionary. It really goes to show you how out of touch the photography "influencer" types are.

@perilthecat
@perilthecat 6 ай бұрын
You’re maybe misunderstanding the point of sync at this speed. It allows you to control ambient light. The camera tells the flash when to fire. Sony makes two flashes that speak with the camera automatically to fire at the optimal moment, third party brands you’ll have to dial in manually to get the peak in the right spot if they’re off a bit. Light travels at 299,792,458 m/s, it’ll have no trouble making it to your subject and reflecting to the camera in 1/80,000 of a second. Your main focus at that point is providing enough output, ie: buying a powerful flash. Shouldn’t be a problem for anyone with USD$6k to spend on a camera.

Impressive 24M camera, the flash synchronization is also impressive. No rolling shutter, which is truly remarkable. (The XT-5 has 40M and a shutter speed of up to 180,000 seconds). For sports photographers it is the ultimate camera with outstanding video capabilities - maybe also for wedding photographers. But for fashion / wildlife photography ? @@stanislasflipo7214 It's called a cripple hammer. That's fine if it's the Pinnacle of the tech, but again the poor rollout of firmware updates in the past just means we're stuck. No doubt this is cool tech but it's just a rolling shutter. However, the latest on the R5ii is that it will have internal filters which means it will not have a rolling shutter, which then means Sony has a real opportunity here. I'm a Sony guy, but only because they make the best sensors and allow 3rd party lenses. Prices are way high and the $2000.00 awesome cameras are way gone now. I vote with my wallet and I'll wait until someone irons out the issues with global shutter tech before upgrading, and it may or may not be with Sony.
