I share my thoughts on the rumored Sony a9X. Rumored to have more than 50Mpx, 8k30p, and an announcement around Q1 2021.

I shoot an A9 now. Good camera. Takes great pictures. I don’t care about more mega pickles 😂 or 8k video. What I want are menus that don’t make my eyes bleed (partly accomplished) and vastly better modern network connectivity. Not some crappy ftp upload or a terrible app. I want to have it easier than my smartphone to put my pictures wherever I want them without touching an SD card and without having to push any buttons or use any apps. Wired and wireless. Improve the workflow. Make it painless. THEN I will have mental space to care about lots of pixels and 8k video which I mostly won’t use anyway.

The a7 series is the hybrid series, I think sony separates their cameras perfectly. 9 series for sports pros, R for photo, S for video and 7 for hybrid. The c is a compact a7iii.

I figured this is to compete with the upcoming Canon R1x and not the R5. So a $5,000 price point would be about right.

I personally don’t care about the video specs (I take photos only), but I’ve been hoping Sony would come out with a higher megapixel A9. Fast, silent, good low-light capabilities, and 50 MP (with the option to use fewer)? Sounds pretty perfect!

I am in the same camp as Mimi. Don't care about video, just a higher megapixel a9 so I can do high resolution action wildlife and BIF. Who would have thought that Canon was going to answer my prayers with the R5. So glad Sony was forced to respond. Can't wait. If Sony had done it earlier, it would have killed Canon for good, so I think they messed up.

On my wishlist: A camera only for photography, but with more options like focus stacking, RAW stacking (for astrophotography), Pixel shift-RAWs calculated inside the camera, lossless compressed RAW, better back screen, the new menu system etc. The videographers have their A7SIII, it would be nice to have a camera for landscape/astro-shooters.

I shoot high resolution action wildlife and birds in flight (BIF) so I have been wishing for a camera with the A7R4 resolution (40MP or more) with the A9 fast focus, tracking and 20 FPS. The Canon R5 came along and was everything I would want (on top of video too?).. I am thrilled that Sony is coming out with this A9x. They need to!! The A9 performance has been out now for 3 years. If they had come out with this before the R5, they would have put the nail on the coffin for Canon. Prefer one camera to have it all vs. having to carry so many specialized cameras.

It will never happen. End Users will NEVER EVER be happy with anything. It will always be something. Technology will always evolve and end users will always just buy shit anyways. If you want the perfect camera then develop it yourself. What is "all" that you want? 1000 megapixels. 12k 120fps with a workable codec 40 stops of dynamic range, 50 mp stills, This is how these companies stay in business and continue to evolve. In 2 years it will be the A7R5 or 6 with 90mp who knows. Like just get a friggin camera and shoot with it.

@@RainBowBaLLerHD Yeah I mean I hear ya. I think we will def get it though when the Sony A7iv comes out or even the A7R5. The A7siii is fantastic but someone who wants the best of both worlds you are really only optioned to Canon R5, unless you have deep pockets and roll with the Fuji GFX100 which well only really does 4k30, but still what a beast. I think end of this year and Q1 2021 will be a large jump forward for other companies gunning for Canon or Sony spotlight. I think Fuji will come out with XT5 / XH2 and it will be 4k120p with options up to 6k30 or shoot even 60, and a new 32mp sensor that I think sony is working on. one can dream.

Totally agree! Perfecting the Hybrid is the way to go!!! Triple “!” People are looking for a kit to fit into a single bag and have a smaller footprint. They want to use the camera in their hand for what ever they are looking to do! If they work on perfecting maybe a 32mp stacked backlight sensor, true 10-14 shutter per sec, no buffer so I can switch from video to stills and back without lag. Then I would buy at least two so I don’t have to change my lens during the wedding. The Perfect Hybrid! Lastly, why 32mp.....sharper, cleaner, still a manageable size, should be able to have clean 6k, and with a stacked sensor slightly larger body and larger grip would also be a happy acceptable result. One can dream....hopefully Sony will make the dream come true!

My dream list will be 1) 50 or ideally more MP which will allow me to shoot the camera in APS-C crop mode with enough resolution for cropping in, 2) must improve the animal eye AF and tracking to match the R5 or to better it to reclaim the throne, 3) very fast frame rate, much faster than the A7R IV while still allowing me to enjoy the benefits of the high res sensor, 4) must cut down on the buffer drastically, perhaps by using two CFExpress Type A cards for max write speed, 5) better IBIS, 6) bigger body with a bigger and much more high res LCD screen.

Well, if they want to charge US$2K more than the R5, then they will have to give me: 1) a high res sensor, 50 MP is only 5 MP more than the R5, give me more, I shoot birds I need more resolution for cropping in. 2) Frame rate, it will have to be faster than the R5. At least 14 mechanical and may be around 25 electronic minimum. 3) Even more importantly is the AF. The word is R5's AF has already surpassed Sony especially with regards to animal eye AF and tracking. The R5's overlay appears from much farther away than the Sonys, Sony will have to retake the lead in this department. And don't forget, the Canon R1 will be launching in 2021 too. The question then becomes if the A9 is truly Sony's ultimate flagship series, shouldn't it compete with the R1 as opposed to R5? The R1 will have some pretty innovative features, so the A9X better have something different to offer too.

Would consider buying it, if it had: Low resolution mode without crop (to mimic A7/A7S); something like "Internal Electronic ND filter"; Internal GPS for location tags (hard to use current technology by sharing coordinates from phone while using 2x camera bodies); Full flip screen (from Sony A7C); top part of camera with silver frame design (from Sony A7C); improved joystick control of AF; Video mode 4k@120fps without recording limit and overheating; Customizable color of AF point on screen; Assignable button for very fast switch from human to animal AF :)

Totally get what you mean with slimming down the FF product line and I guess it would increase economies of scale and reduce costs. But: Imagine a cross shape, in the middle you have the original A7 series for the best all around capabilities. If you tend to be a photographer, go to the right (A7r) If you do video, go to the left (A7s) If you are willing to spend more, go up (A9) if you want to save, go down (A7c?) 😂 Sure, the last series‘s release was questionabl(y late) but adding a camera to the top right, that pushes the original A9 a little to the left would be interesting for people with more money available to boost their current A7R3/4 into video capabilities too.

The general idea sounds nice, just like the canon, but I'm not sure if this is a camera for the A9 series - but I don't know where to fit it else in Sony's line up. The A9 so far was focused at sports and maximum AF and shutter speed performance - especially with the no blackout stacked sensor. A lot of the people using it are using it for it's still relatively small 24mp (especially press) and it's high capabilities in general speed and size. I'm not saying the A9x would be a bad idea, the opposite, but I think Sony should find its own name for it. The Alpha X without a 9 maybe. But something I'm actually worried about is the body. Sony fixed a lot of issues with their software with the A7sIII, but to keep the heat and feel of this controlled, I want Sony to finally mix up their bodies formula a little bit. Their grip is still way to close to the lens (can't wear gloves in winter) and the rear screens are the smallest of today's FF competition. The bodies are also not really as well weather sealed as other manufacturers - tho that makes heat a problem again. So I think it's necessary for Sony to change a decent amount of the body design to actually make this camera. Sony needs this camera, a true hybrid again. Maybe even let it be the A7rV and make the series skip the A7IV to make a lower Res version of the A9x but actually name it A7V

Really great videos BTW. Thanks! I am looking forward to the A9’s successor. Before considering that R5, let me share a few important things that have translated into enjoying the art of photography a lot more, while significantly increasing associated revenues. I felt the same way about not having two cameras, but in 1 year of doing it I found something out that really surprised me. After shooting with some successful photogs of some renown who have done this for years, I tried their recommendation of always keeping a zoom on one and an appropriate prime on the other. Street vs wildlife vs sports are different combos. All I can say is that I shoot much more relaxed, with better creative focus and cleaner sensors than needing to change lenses last minute or having to make do by cropping and losing resolution and/or DOF- and more importantly, nailing a lot more great (often lucrative) photos- some of of them that paid for the other body several times over. Now I almost always go out with two cameras ready to go. I used to travel with a 1DXII plus lenses and batteries, etc, so it still is easier and lighter than before. Now, to the R5.... We use a range of Canon, Blackmagic, Sony and Panasonic cameras, and purchased two R5’s last month. We have a lot of EF glass as well. All I can say related to our R5 experience is, SO MANY PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS... We love Canon for solid, dependable performance. Used their DSLR and Cinema lines for many years. But the R5 has all of the low-light focus, stabilization, metering, overheating and other issues that many have found, and more. The 30 minute limitation because Canon did not want it to compete with their cinema line sucks but is acceptable, as we knew about that going in when we ordered them. However, first, the overheating is real- and not just with video. If you shoot any high quality video, it starts the count down that limits subsequent stills shooting. It happened with both R5’s the same way, in that we did a little b-roll for a minute here or there, some stills, continued to walk and look for more B-roll, and then... with the cameras not being used for most of the following hour other than a still shot here or there, the first then the second R5 shut down for hours and were unusable. Same thing happened again and a third time- even putting them in plastic bags in the cooler bags for 20-25 minutes before the third time. So, for Wednesday, we brought a Blackmagic and Sony and used them most of the day. Then when we got done shooting, the editing format problems reared their nasty head. We shoot a lot of 4K, 6K, 6.5K and 8K, but even on our high end edit and VFX bays the R5 was a very poor edit. You have to transcode it, which takes 3:1 at best, and 18:1 at worst, depending on the format. 2010 dual XEON with Titan X, a $29K 2020 Mac Pro or similarly decked-out dual 2080Ti i9 PC’s didn’t matter. Canon has real format issues. The lens was great and a step in the right direction, but even the new C70 that Canon had said is the pro entry level camera for cinema video is an S35, which doesn’t even compete with the Blackmagic 6K in many respects. So in a wide range of use cases, based on our and many others’ experiences, we need to forget about thinking the R5 is a pro video camera; even for B-roll- at least if your time and shooting schedule are valuable commodities. So, simply stated, we we all very saddened by the R5’s limitations and problems. However, we did get to try out the new Sony A7SIII. Now THAT is one amazing pro caliber video camera, which will eliminate our need to rent the ARRI’s anymore, once they come in next week. And it has amazing focus, tracking, exposure, low-light, grade-ability, actual dual redundant card recording. We found out the hard way on “Alice” (one of the R5’s), that the R5 is sequential proxy- not a dual redundant system, which resulted in 2 corrupted SD cards when the first one got bad writes that were proxied to the second. That was beyond the final straw for us on the R5. However, if you just want to use it for stills, other than some metering and low light focus/tracking issues, it was great. So, that may be a good reason to get one, especially with the new lenses- although if I wanted a better stills camera for sports/wildlife or landscape respectively and was considering buying new lenses anyway, I would go with an A9 or A7RIV respectively, and avoid all those R5 issues until the A9X arrives, while getting better performance envelopes and very usable video capabilities that do not cause all the R5 issues. For cine or serious pro video, it would now be the A7SIII without a doubt. That is if you need ARRI-level capabilities, or low-light creative an other abilities far beyond any ARRI or related alternatives. Heck, we have two died in the wool Canon aficionados who’ve hated Sony and called them “toys” for years, who are getting the A7SIII, so that said a lot to me.

I think the others were $4500 at release right? That seems fair. I personally think 36MP would be best. When I had a D800, that was impressive compared to other cameras at the time and I haven't been impressed like that with any increases. That way you could maintain high MP but hopefully keep a massive buffer with the new cards. Buffer is more important than MP to me. A7siii video features are fine though I'm not someone that sits around grading stuff (though I've tried) 8k is neat but unnecessary but if they can pull it off without overheating that'd definitely make Canon look bad.

Are there to many options? Sure there is, if money is not an issue for you. The problem is that Sony would loose allot of customers if they only offered a A7 and A9. That’s why the specialised A7R and the A7S makes perfect sense because it allows people with restraint to get their specific needs covered without having to a premium for something they might have no need for. Honestly what Sony is doing is no less confusing than what Canon (R5, R6, R, RP) and Nikon (Z6, z7, z5 and the rumoured S versions of these and z8/9) is doing, however I think their naming at least make it somewhat easier to understand. That said the A7C is really not needed and it only muddies the picture. Would I get the A9x no, as I have no need for it, I don’t do videos so I’ll settle with the newest A7R and then use the A7 as a backup camera. I completely agree that the pricing should come close to that of Canon and it should have 24fps or more and Global shutter would make it desirable for many.

Yes, we are all used to the 4500 dollar flagship Sony concept, but sincerely, paying 500 dollars extra for a lot more features that combines from two 3500 dollar cameras is a big steal.

Stop with the megapixel wars already! Very, very few people need or take advantage of such high megapixel images. They slow everything down and fill hard drives needlessly

Pre pandemic I think people might purchase this camera. Post pandemic not a shot. Theirs so many people not even paying their rent because they can't afford it right now and sony wants to release this camera and charge over $5000? People need to get their priorities straight.

Your price point is funny to Sony. They pricing new cameras like it break through, look at crappy a7c or ZV1

I just got my a7siii two days ago, and that’s all I need for video. I already did 4 paid jobs with it and it’s a beast! I also think $5,500 is perfect for the a9x.

It’s better the have specific cameras with specific purposes. I for one could careless about low light, video or speed. I prefer I higher megapixel with high resolution. @bobbyfingers

Sony will never never improve mechanic shutter. With stack sensor, sony will eventually kill mechanical shutter and replace it with global electronic shutter

Why would Sony want to make an all-in-one camera when people like YOU are outright admitting that you will buy two separate cameras to fill those needs if left with no other choice?

I really dislike your imperative tone in the video. It's of course fine to voice your opinion, but yelling at a company to obey your opinion is a bit much venturing. In the end, there are surely other photographers with different opinions. A “please” can change a lot.
