My Thoughts on the Sony a7C Before Launch

Just throwing my two cents before the launch of the Sony a7C and whether I would consider getting it with the current rumored specifications.

There is no chance to see this camera for 1500$. It has the same specs as the A7 III which costs yet 1800$ but this one is smaller and newer... The price of this thing is too high and will only drop to 1500 if Sony releases a A7 IV

I speculate, that the pricing is set high, but get lower very soon, like the Sony 6100. That are my wishes. Something around 1600$ would be nice and realistic.

I'm in the target, I wanna buy something like that. But simply a smaller version of the a7 iii for more than $2000 almost 3 years later is honestly too much. You also have to consider that FE lenses are even more expensive... It doesn't seem like a good switch for APS-C owners like me

Pretty much what Alessandro said. If it's going to basically be the A7III for about the same price with the only difference is the flip screen and new menus, I won't even consider it. Feels like 10 bit is a must at $2000 in the year 2020 and forward. For the love of god not another 4k30p 8 bit 100mbs camera Sony.

Agreed. I’d like to move up from my a6000. This camera will decide whether it’s up to full frame or the a6400 (which to me isn’t that much of an upgrade for me re: landscape and travel photography).

Brian Whitmore I don’t know for sure but isnt the a6000 and the a6400 pretty much the same when it comes to photo specs? Better AF on the a6400 but maybe thats not important for landscape?

I think the target for this camera may be the average customer (I am thinking of the majority of people watching youtube videos rather than uploading them). Basically people who take pictures and occasional video for personal record, sharing them with family and a few friends. Personally, I think the a7iii is a compelling option, however, when we look at the competition, the lack of modern features (good touch interface on an articulating screen, better IBIS etc.) holds it back. I think the cut on custom buttons/joystick also indicates that the target market is probably not the professional photographer or film-maker but the casual photographers who take pictures for themselves. The ones who want to be able to hand the camera out to someone for the occasional 'I was here' kind of picture . Personally, I am kind of interested. I also think its a smart move from Sony as they have already established their credentials in the professional arena and they are now in a great position to attract the bigger market and possibly charge a premium for the brand value.

I'm excited for it. From my understanding, Sony has commonly been fair with pricing to features offered. The A7S 3 is arguably the best camera out of the R5 and S1H and its more affordable than both. If they price it at over 2k, im sure it will be noticeably better than the A73. I would be interested in picking up an A7c for the size as well as the A74 when it comes out.

Why it makes sense to put a full frame Sensor into the A6600 housing?🤔 I expect a new APS-C sensor and a new A7000.

If just 10bit is in there, it’s a good one. Super small to travel with anywhere while getting full frame and Sony focus. APSC lenses were always a drawback for them and. IQ yii can put on a FE 50mm 1.8 for $250-$1000 and go to town. Their lenses are lighter at full frame than Fuji APSC are.

With a new mount I would probably buy a Canon R6. That glass is nice and it'd be a different mount just like a Sony new mount.

I do mostly outdoor adventure photography/video and size and weight is extremely important to me which is why I mostly shot apsc. So this camera could be a good mix for me with the Tamron lenses.

I've been eager to retire my a6000 for years and jump to full frame for 1K-1.5K body only, might put more but i prioritize lenses. I mainly use my camera as a hobby, essentially stills and travel (always 2 lenses; a fast prime and a telephoto). I already struggles with the size/weight of the a6000+lens+accessories to fit in carry-ons so this form factor is definitely for me. But not at 2k thought... but I might get it on sale next year. Edit: a lot of people see this A7C as a downgrade because they are used to other A7 cameras already. Think of all APS-C users (A6xxx)... I don't think they miss features they don't have (joystick and stuffs)

i´ve been dreaming for this design for years, its for my big nose being free and not squeezed against the monitor, especially touch screen is a nightmare on the a7 serie, - my only still missing wish, is the will make it possible to use the exposure compensation wheel for other functions, but yes i its looks great

9:25 I'm not sure the "expensive FF lens" arguments makes sense there, considering you just talked about the 16-55mm APS-C lens, which costs 1300 usd, the equivalent on FF would be a 24-82.5 f4, and even the superior Sigma 24-70 f2.8 only costs 1100 usd. So, if anything, FF has a lot more cheap options than APS-C, because of third party ... also have a look at what Samyang is bringing. Still, I think it's about resource management, R&D. It's more efficient for a company to focus on one system instead of multiple systems. Each time an APS-C lens is released, it's a FF lens that was not released instead, simply because they have limited resources.

As someone who uses a 6300, I like the idea of a smaller full-frame camera. However, for the specs and price point it just doesn't make any sense.

I wanted a full frame in the APS-C body but the A7000 never appeared, Or maybe it has now. But the pricing is either wrong or it has some of those bits from the a7siii and the CFexpress, even then the price is bit steep. C is for Convenient.

I’ll never grasp the idea of such a compact FF body. The A7 series is already unbalanced enough as it is (although it’s gotten better in every new iterations) shrinking it even more is ergonomically just a bad idea. The great FE-mount lenses is often just as big (sometimes longer due to flang distance) and heavy as DSLR counterpart putting any of those lenses onto such a small body would be a nightmare in terms of use. I’m sure Sony is gonna launch some cheaper, lighter plastic lenses to counter that specific issue, but it’s seems mostly as compromise and what gain would you get by the FF if you just toss a cheap, light average lens on it, if you want to get the fullest out of a FF you need proper glass.

You are totally right about prices. There will not be a better and cheaper a7iii. If it's better you pay more. A crazy exemple is the rx100 mark 1. You can still have the same first camera for about the same price. It's crazy.

I like the idea of the more compact size, but the size and flip-out screen aren’t enough to justify spending more on it than the a7iii, in my opinion. I’m looking to upgrade to FF from APS-C in the near future, but I’d rather wait to see what Sony does with the a7iv. At that point, I’ll either go a7iv if the specs fit my use better, or the a7iii might drop a bit in price at that point. I want to like the a7c, but it sounds like I’ll pass, if these specs are accurate.

If you're on a budget for a full frame Sony the A7RII might be an option? It has eye autofocus, not as fast as the A7III but still very decent. I'm using a Sony A7RII recently and it's surprisingly good (I was a Nikon user before, only thing is that the Nikon colors were much better).

At this point if you need small size, that is what APS-C is for. A small FF, for over $2000 - doesn't make much sense! I have the Sony a7iii and a7riii and perfectly happy. I will be looking at the a7IV when it hits as a maybe, but a flip up screen (yes, I would rather have up than to the side - weird I know, but I have the ZV-1 and I always feel like I am going to break it off).

People assume it´s a newer cam it should cost more. Not really, it has the same specs as the a7III but 2 years later, meaning all tech is cheaper to make (prob also the sensor). This cam should be well below 2000USD, maybe not at 1500, but soemwhere 1799 USD, and then we get a streetprice of about 1650ish. Still i would welcome the opposite, APS-C in a a7III body... for the same price.

I very much prefer the EVF on the side like the a6600. The center mounted EVF is a throwback to DSLRs and there is no place for my nose.

I do not think it is technically possible to put full-frame 4K 60 FPS uncropped in a weather-sealed frame that small. Lumix S5 has cropped 4K 60 FPS and still overheats.

If it is a A73 spec with the new AF and stabalisation - plus catalyst browse software compatibility I'd say £2200 is to much. They'll sell some at £1800, they'd sell a lot a £1500.

Sony likes to complicate things for vlogging. Instead of starting off with a FF sensor, they could have just released a "A6700" under $1500 which is basically A6600 with 4k60, a flip-out screen, lower still fps, better IBIS (with the smaller sensor), new touch menu, and a true vlogging 12-40 lens.

Exactly this. Why does it feel like the camera manufacturers only give us at best 75% of the cameras we want? Either it's lacking the flip screen or the lenses are wierd or the prices doesn't makes sense. If they just listen I think there's a lot of money to be made. And even if they loose some money in the short term, I think it's good to get people into their ecosystem like with the Playstation where they actually lost money on every sold console but made it back in games n stuff.

Good for a first camera. Not really an upgrade if you own an A6500/A6600. Less video capabilities, less custom buttons, what is this? I'd rather get the A7III for that matter at the same or lower price. If it has 10bit at 4k 60fps ... then I'll eat my words.

I bought both the 16-55 2,8 G and the 70-350 G for APS-C. If Sont tries to force me into full frame I will buy only Tamron and Sigma lenses, so Sony will not make any money on lenses from me.

Don't see a reason even considering this camera for buying, while I still have my a6300 and A7III. Not every new product must be a hit. It still may find a nieche, I don't see a reason why though. Feels like a filler between A7IIIs and A7IV anouncments, something to talk about before we'll meet next big product.

No... if you gonna use a FF camera you are ending up with bigger and heavier lenses, bigger lenses on a smaller body is just giving more discomfort as you end up with a very unbalanced and nose heavy camera with a worse grip or less quality lenses with distortion issues. If you want a lighter set up that you would be able to tuck into a pocket or small bag you should avoid FF format cameras exactly of those reason, with a crop you also have the benefit of smaller lenses but getting the same reach making you less noticeable, easier to walk around in public transport and in crowded areas but at the price of being restricted in low light situations. The best street photography set is still APS-C unless you shoot low light.

Hey, I've heard rumours this camera is going to only 8bit 8bit for $2100 which is £1660 British pounds for body only!. If the specs I've heard rumoured are correct sony has lost their minds!. Absolutely ridiculous surely sony knows releasing a camera in 2020 for $2100 body only without 10bit is unacceptable!. If this camera had 4k 24,30 full frame 10bit 4.2.2 and 4k 60p 10bot 4.2.2 even at a crop like the S5 + 1080p 10bit 24.30.60.120.240p I'd buy it immediately even at £1660 UK! Because the form factors perfect but sorry 8bit no way deal breaker I'll immediately rule it out!.
