Sony FX3/FX30, FX6 FIRMWARE UPDATE Roadmap

It's baffling how Sony doesn't offer Open Gate and Full Height anamorphic modes when Lumix, Fuji and Blackmagic all do. There's nothing about the FX3/6 and Burano hardware that prevents it, and it could be done with Firmware upgrades. Fuji released an 800 dollar camera that shoots 6.2k open gate 10bit, and Sony still acts like that's a premium feature you need to pay for a Venice to get

@@gabrielmachadobsb is actually really annoying me that they don't have it. I had a shoot the other week and the client asked me after I'd finishing the edit for a vertical version. I cropped it, and it looked rubbish. So the next shoot we, looked on the day making it a little wider so we could crop it again, but ultimately it felt like a compromise on both aspect ratios, so we just shot it both in landscape and vertical. I honestly think if we had open gate we could have made it look really nice with both

Oh man this is so awesome! I don't own a videoassist right now but since the update is coming in september, I'll have more than enough time to get one. FX30 is my first proper "cinema" camera, and frankly the first fairly high end camera I purchased and I definitely don't regret a thing. I LOVE sony's new found commitment to providing firmware updates.

Is the update affecting the perform ve of the third party crop lenses from sigma / viltrox/ tamaron ?

@harshbhavsaar2283 I'm guessing you mean the previous update that added shutter angle. Yeah, the AF stopped working with my Samyang lenses. But updating the firmwares of the lenses fixed the issue. Not only did it fix the issue, it actually improved several other things about the lenses.

If Panasonic releases a new s5 or S1H model with even more improved autofocus and full frame 4k 60 with literally the same features they already have, none of this will matter. Lot of people are fine with moving to the s5iix already. They need to get these firmwares out way faster. One thing I’m jealous of that Panasonic doesn’t have though is a great working app like monitor+ to monitor, touch focus, etc with not using a monitor setup with batteries and bulkiness

As someone who uses DaVinci for all his works and has dreamed of BRAW being in Sony cameras, this software update has come one year too late. Lumix won me over with the amazing Lumix S5IIX. Phenomenal camera that has had BRAW plus all of these features such as anamorphic desqueeze from day one. Congrats to the Sony boys who have stuck around, but Sony could have saved many of us from switching had they done this much sooner. Too little too late.

Yeah, that's the thing. Sony needs us to buy a new camera every now and then. Lumix needs us to grow market share so we get cheatcodes enabled from launch.

The s5ii sales are really bad and barely took any marketshare sadly, I really wish the s1h ii will be a success and give lumix the funds to compete but right now these influencers camera are just not appealing to pros...gimmicks after gimmicks with thesame sensor for 5 years now and horrible hdmi delay :(

Sony’s methodical approach to updates is both fascinating and infuriating, not to mention they have blown up most of my thinking about hardware updates (not) coming in the months ahead. I think there’s still an FX9 category replacement which is likely to show up in the first half of next year, but Sony apparently has no plans to change to FX6 anytime soon. I’m okay with that I guess. The FX3/6 sensor is still exceptional for many uses. At the same time, the product cycle pace has stalled and it may be time to consider alternatives to the FX line next year. For the moment, I will be fine.

FX30 deserves RAW from the FULL 6K (open gate) sensor - that has to be easy to implement (RAW requires NO processing - just a 'dumb' pipe) - but Sony is probably too worried that giving that to the FX30 would destroy a lot of FX3 sales (except for people who like to shoot in very dark locations). Right now the crop on the FX30 for 'RAW' is unacceptable and I am sure unnecessary except for marketing/sales reasons!

Not gonna happen it’s a super 35 you can’t just change the frame. IT would make sense if they release it for only full frame cinema cameras or hybrid with a fan but that would make it very difficult for users to choose from

The s5iix is awesome and has a lot of features, but its not as snappy and fun to use as the FX3. The boot up time is 5 seconds, the OS sometimes stops responding, and it offers a lot of options but somehow always has some limitation that makes it uggh

Well now that i see what the big 6 menu looks like i do like it, im hoping there will be a fewture to turn it off and on cause when im run and gunning with no monitor o need my rear screen to see what im shooting. The braw thing is awesome but will it be an additional crop similar to shooting with a ninja v ? Also the fact thst only the Venice is getting el zone pisses me off. Why give all the camwras the big 6 menu and not el zone???

Sony makes it sound like they’re using a very old school software process where every device is using a completely unique code base, which makes it hard to get anything done quickly. Imagine if Apple had to ship feature updates to each iPhone variant individually, rather than just having a single OS that runs on all of their (supported) iPhones.

Is just de squeeze or also shooting the footage in the right aspect ratio for anamorphic as well ??? Like a 1.8x anamorphic on 4:3 aspect ratio footage or shooting 6:5 with a 2x anamorphic , 1.5x with 3:2 footage or is just applying a 1.5x desqueeze on a 16:9 footage ?

I just hope they give open gate option on their cinema cameras since it's should function as a cinema camera. Since fx3 and fx30 dont have internal nd then they should atleast give the best update. Unlock the camera's strength. If they do the open gate for sure the fx30 will win over fx3 on the image quality dues to 6k sensor.

I don't really know how I feel about investing $600+ dollars in a blackmagic video assist monitor to record BRAW to an SD card...lol. I have a Ninja V with a 1TB SSD, at least the storage speed is going to be a lot faster than an SD card. It would be nice if Blackmagic would support ProRes RAW in DaVinci Resolve instead but who knows if that will ever happen...lol.

That's a hardware limitation of the sensor. The most it could do without a crop is 114 fps due to the sensor readout speed

I have still not update my FX30 to the latest bc I was not sure of something and maybe someone can chime in. If I am in Shutter angle can I just spin my dial to drop down to something euqilvant to 1/15th or something similar to get the blurry "effect" just like I can now? I like doing that everything once in a while but do not want to have to fiddle through the menus to change that. As it is now I can just spin my shutter speed down easily and back , but not sure if that is possible with the shutter angle triggered? Thanks if anybody could help me out with that question before I update.

You can still use shutter speed after the update. Shutter angle is added as an additional option. When using shutter angle, yes, you can roll the shutter to different degrees quickly with the wheel/dial. Higher number = more motion blur 🤙

How can it take a year for Sony to add these features? For a company so embedded in cinema, they are really bad at updating cameras. Also, I hope they don’t brick more people’s cameras and refuse to pay for the repairs. We don’t need new cameras. Updates are all that is needed unless you need internal ND filters on your camera bodies. Then again there cameras you can buy. Sony cameras are already great cameras. No need to keep making new cameras.
