Yep.Great review. Will most likely get the 24-70GM II. Waiting for an updated 85mm GM but will hopefully be a 1.2 and not a 1.4. But am tempted to go for the 50/1.2 GM instead. I sometimes feel I came to the Sony Alpha system to early (Feb 2014) as the lenses were not quite there in terms of ultimate quality and definitely size and weight to match the compact nature of the cameras. But after 6-7 years, they are finally getting there and it means me slowly getting rid of my past lens purchases and updating one by one!

I had the old version and now I have the new version so I’ll have to disagree with you on it being only a little sharper. It’s definitely sharper at 2.8 and the much closer focusing is a big improvement as well and I notice that it’s faster at focusing but not by a huge amount but it’s noticeable.

Great video as always. I do have a standard zoom the Tamron 28-75 but find myself using it less and less at weddings preferring my sigma 85 f1.4 art and Sony 35 f1.8. So I'm thinking of getting the 24 gm and the 35 gm instead of this 24-70, which was my original plan when I moved to Sony. Maybe I will wait for your Zoom vs Prime video. The new lenses from Sony are outstanding

Can you help me decide which one should I buy sony 16-35 gm2 or 24-70 gm2. I m just a hobbyist photographer n like to shoot portrait of family n travel photographs. I don't like to keep changing lens n want to travel light with light setup. Please suggest. Just for info I have the following but I don't like to switch n want to have one lens on my camera Sony 11mm f1.8 Sony 50mm f2.8 Sony 90mm f2.8 Sigma 30mm f1.4 Sony 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens (I usually use this most as I don't have to switch)

No need for a new 85mm 1.4. The Sigma DG DN REALY does the trick (despite having to activate the distortion compensation -for the finder)! (..It even has a perfect perture ring! lol) I guess only a GM f1.2 could justify the expense. (I have the GM 50mm f1.2 : no question my best ever 50. But then again I prefer the DGDN 35 f1.2 to the perfect GM 1.4 35mm II.)

The Sigma DGDN f1.4 will be difficult to beat. Hence f1.2 with 10 linear motors will be necessary to "justify" the price for a new GM 85 version ;-)

I'd love to see a comparison between this gm ii vs prime lenses. That's really what I'm afraid of when looking at lenses. So I usually get a prime since they are usually always better.

You continue to make me poorer and poorer. Nice video and thoughts on comparing with the first version. Regarding the 85gm, I'm scared.. it has its own unique rendering look that other primes does not offer, but we know a new version of the lens will be sharper, size and weight will make me want to upgrade like these new lens. I keep saying I'm done and then new versions come out.. zzz zzz

Good content, but why the hell doesn't he use at least the rear lens caps when shuffling that GM glass on the table? It's painful to watch, hard to believe he's treating his own lenses this way.... Why would anybody be putting a bare mount with exposed rear element on any surface?

Fair enough! I'm not into zooms myself. It would be great to see f/2 zoom from Sony, although I personally know I would hate the size and weight of it :P

To be honest this new GM II doesn't really blow you away. It is really comparable to the new Tamron G2 and I really don't see how it is more worth it. The Tamron G2 offers pretty much 95% of that new GM lens.

@@BroBrown357 There is no need for speculation. There are many many reviews and comparisons out there. For example, the new 70-200mm GM, which I own, is really a big improvement over the previous model and it doesn't have very good alternatives on the market but the new 24-70mm GM has a lot of stellar alternatives that you can get and save your money, it's just not worth it that much. Also that 82mm filter size looks so ugly. And like many reviews have said the new 24-70mm GM isn't a huge improvement over the previous model. The cheap Sigma and the even cheaper Tamrons, the old 28-75mm, and now the new 28-75mm G2 offer arguably the same optical performance as this new 24-70 GM lens. It's kinda underwhelming actually, I guess the old 24-70mm GM is just too good.
