At the end of the day, Disney/Marvel Studios probably didn't even have to pay a single cent to be able to use Spidey in the movies. 5% of the first dollar gross by definition only refers to the film's first day of release and we don't know what kind of arrangements they really have when it comes to profit sharing but of course it's safe to assume Sony gets the bigger half since it's their property but even then, Disney has full merchandising rights which in itself, is already a huge moneymaker. Heck other movies are made for the sole purpose of selling merch so I'll leave it to you to assume the math. What Disney wants: 50/50 co-financing, full merchandising rights, creative control, with discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe (i.e. Venom, Morbius, etc.) Now, that sounds crazy. Sure, they're willing to give 50% of production costs moving forward but a 50/50 split on revenue all while retaining the perks of full merch and creative control over a property they do not own that possibly extends to other related properties? Disney is asking for way too much. And people are acting like Sony is the asshole for saying no??? Seriously, we need to take off our Mickey Mouse blinders. As much as we love the MCU and as much as Disney has been a part of our formative years, we can't just pretend like they can do no wrong.

Upon first glance it seems like Disney is being greedy and Sony is simply trying not to be taken advantage of. They helped Sony reinvigorate spiderman but it benefited Marvel as well who uses spiderman in their own films (of which sony gets 0% profit from). Sounds like Disney/Marvel were being well compensated for their work with Spiderman but once they saw how much money Sony was making they decided they wanted to split spidey movie profit down the middle...For a movie and character series they don't own...seems preposterous to me. Even if Disney agrees to cover half the finance cost that's nothing compared to the profit they stand to make. I'm wouldn't blame Sony if they decide to part with MCU.

Paul shockley Marvel/Disney didn’t do all the work or most of the work. Sony 100% financed Homecoming and FFH. Marvel Studios helped on those films in exchange to use Spider-man in a few of their films. Disney earned 5% off the 2 Spider-Man films while Sony earned $0 from Civil War and the 2 Avengers films.

What money they did make were from the films itself, and if you own a right like that you're not going to just throw away half of all the money from it. Disney already got a sweet deal. The get all the merch money, can use spidey in mcu movies for free, can use spidey in their theme parks for free and has 5% of the stand alone movies. He’s been personally involved in or associated with almost all of failed super hero films where as it’s generally agreed upon that Feige is the entire reason why Marvel is a) still around and b) continues to be what it is. This is on Disney. Sony wanted to extend the current deal where they keep the Spider-man movie money(except 5%) but fully fund it. Disney get to use the character in all their other films (like the big role he had in IW). Disney wanted 50% from everything related to Spider-man (I guess so they couldn't keep doing films like venom) and so Sony said no. Numbers wise Sony made more then that from the "failed" amazing Spider-man films. Sony isn't going to sell Spider-man. I don't see them doing it anyway. Universal own HULK as well. I never liked like how the Tom Holland Spider-Man films are so dependent upon the connection to the MCU. It contributes to them not standing on their own that well unless you watch the other movies.
