F55 is still my favorite cinema/video camera from Sony. You just can't beat the filmic motion rendering of global shutter. It's 14 stops of dynamic range is not as good as the Arri Alexas, but I'll gladly give up a stop of dynamic range for global shutter. The FX9 is a good b cam to go along with the F55, but given the choice I will choose the F55 over any other camera out there right now.

@@MrCJHamill The motion rendering of global shutter may seem trivial to many that claim the fast sensor read out of the Alexas and Reds are "good enough".. But I assure you the subtle difference between a rolling shutter with fast sensor read out and global shutter is subconsciously appreciable. That's why some big budget action films still use film cameras. Just look at the motion rendering on the F55 on Vimeo.

I’ve had my hands on the FX9 twice and talked to a Sony guy about it. I’ll wait using/buying the FX9 until the first updates are coming next summer. The FS7 mk-I has 4K DCI and the 2K Center Image mode are both important features I use and would miss with the FX9. What I wonder is why some smaller adjustments and improvements are missing that makes a difference when working with the camera. I assume many of us work with different cameras of diverse camera manufacturers and could tell Sony about some easy to implement features. Is Sony asking anyone for this input? What about buttons that can be backlit when working in darker areas as a teater where it is not popular to use a torch? Buttons that can be switched off completely in the menu (as for example the «Full Auto» button at the FS7 MK-I, the Iso/Gain, Wht bal, Shutter buttons..) I don’t usw them and it is just irritating when I touch them by accident. It is mentioned that the Thumbnail button is such a candidate to. The LCD monitor cable that is weak and cannot be easily when it is broken (and that is happening). The bad plastic that is used at the Viewfinder and is broken at my camera. Sony wants 400.-€ for fixing this. A part that costs some cents. Good I could fix it with gaffer tape and super glue. The microphone adapter that breaks quite often, good this hasn’t been changed! Placement of buttons at the operator side that should easily be founded when working handheld/on shoulder. Why is the camera gray and not black. Black is better when thinking of reflections on windows etc. Why is there no recording lamp on the LCD when turning of all display info by pushing the Display button? Beta Sp cameras had this light... The record button of the new handle: why is it replaced? It makes more sense to have it next to the thumb as it was on the FS7 instead of «hiding» it between the other buttons. Sometimes recording must happen instantly. The menu is a mess. It doesn’t seem to be really improved. Without the User menu I would hate using the FS7. Menu bugs haven’t been fixed at least until v4.0. Why is it when using the Sony zoom 18-110 at Video>Monitor LUT ONLY possible to turn the MLUT for for SDI1&Internal «Off» and the other 3 settings «On» when the setting at System>Lens is «OFf» for Distirtion Comp. ?? You can find out in which case this is an issue:) Is it possible to transfer my settings for the FS7 to the FX9? I assume not. I’m sure there are more issues I don’t remember right noe. But of course the FS7 is a money maker and a work horse and I have my workarounds, but all this issues are why I would instantly switch to another camera if there would be a real competitor on the marked for my kind of work.
@axeldietrich33475 жыл бұрын
Sony guy said the LCD screen is actually a touch screen and will be activated later. He didn’t know when.
@axeldietrich33475 жыл бұрын
My hope is that Sony sees this:) A good camera but these details make me wait and see if there is coming a better camera or if these issues are going to be improved later by Sony. At the moment it is a camera made by engineers. Why should I buy an uncompleted camera lacking standard features as 4K DCI?
@axeldietrich33475 жыл бұрын
Another question I have is why the FS7/FX9 is labelled as very good for handheld work. In comparison the shoulder cameras as DigiBeta etc where much more balanced. FS7/FX9 is much more shaky (but still much better than it’s competors nowadays)

@javierdepablosvelez36025 жыл бұрын
Hi Jake, Thanks for the response! 1. Good to know- kind of a shame DPAF isn’t as good but that’s great news for Sony owners. 2. Footage in general from the tests you shot as far as the over sharpened look and then the crushed comment was regarding the footage from the hockey game. It’s not that it’s bad, just not my preference for out of the box look. 3. The FX9 has so many positives and I can see why it has true potential to dominate its market. Better colors, great AF, much better price, and same form everyone already loved from the FS7. My concern is most of the work I do is Canon based and I’m focusing more on cine work atm. The FX9 seems to have the better compressed format while just being an absolute pain when it comes to RAW (not as streamlined as the c500mk 2). My biggest concern is what you found regarding the dynamic range in the over/under test with the C500.

Great review, the FX9 absolutely trounced the C500 MkII on the dynamic range test...all the people who said the C500 II was better because of specs, this is why I kept saying wait until we see footage side by side.

Bare in mind this is XAVC-I VS XF-AVC. The C500MKII does much better with CRM but comparing XAVC to CRM would have been unfair. I would like to test the RAW out of the FX9 next to CRM and see how they compare. Thanks for watching, Jake

@@CVPTV did you go farther than 6 over and under? the FX9 seems to perform scarily close to the a7iii with an external recorder. Which is to say very close to the Venice from our tests, but I would love to see if how the FX9 and venice do at 7 over and under

I didn’t go any further than +/- 6 but I can in future! Maybe this is an experiment when I get my hands on the FX9 again. A full frame Sony comparison video?

@@CVPTV We will be doing one as well when ours comes in. We are hoping there will be very little need for an external recorder other than on the highest of high end jobs with the FX9. We will be looking at Veince x-ocn vs the internal xavc on it and the FX9 and then throwing the a7iii in just to see how awful it will be if we have to use it on a gimbal. Here is a video I directed recently on the a7iii with recorder. It can get very close to an venice, but the 8 bit can put you in scary places. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYW2hpeQba5jgdU

@@CVPTV Also did you you all account for the 1/3rd stop difference in sensitivity of the venice and fx9? that may account for some of the difference in the over exposer as the venice would be under by about a 3rd on the overs.

@35:25 "[c500ii] is better than the FS7, which completely falls apart at +4 stops" What? Did we watch the same footage? I think the FS7 did a much better job than the c500ii in this particular test. The c500ii is really bad at +4 stops, while the FS7 is really bad at +5 stops. c500ii also starts to loose its color much earlier than the fs7. Which is ridiculous! How can this be? The c500ii is brand new and top of the line! Did you guys mix up the footage? Probably not... Is the XF-AVC a joke? If this is correct, I think this is the BIG take-away. Anyone who is considering buying this camera should be warned. "Hi! Wanna buy this one million dollar camera? Great. Oh! Just a tip - the XF-AVC is unusable. A gimmick. Was perhaps great in 2015. Stick with the storage inefficient CRM. Okay, love ur money. Bye, tatt ta!"

Does the autofocus features on the FX9 work with canon EF Lenses (with metabones or without)?

I need to test it with some newer firmware metabones adapters. Jake

FX9 beat c500ii on every aspect. AF, Color, Dynamic range, sharpness, noise reduct, better sensor, ND Filter, Audio I/O, One operator control, and more. Sony lack just one thing, internal RAW. but FX9 does not think to be a cinema camera but for broadcast.

@@MrlegendOr They each have their pros and cons. The Sony does hold its own, especially for it being the cheaper the camera. But the Canon beats it when it's being shot in RAW (which was not shown in this video). The Canon has true anamorphic, interchangeable mounts, touchscreen autofocus control (much better than Sony's joystick), larger LCD, optional viewfinder, electronic image stabilization, true 6K at 60fps. I also like the form factor of the C500 II so much better than the awkward Sony. I still don't understand what they're doing with that form factor. It's front heavy and doesn't sit on the shoulder well and yet you can't really hold it in front of you with the grip being on that extender arm and whatnot. Out of the box, I'm not really sure how Sony wants you to hold it. It seems like you either need and additional shoulder mount or an Easy Rig. All in all, they are both great cameras. I think the Sony might be the better buy though. I love the new Venice Cinetone color. It looks really great.

@@dcd6115 FX9's 4k downsample from 6k look better( more sharp, less noise, better dynamic range) than canon's 6k With 0 downsampling You don't get any benefice to shoot with 6k sensors who lack dynamic range and soft your image. (make side by side test Downsample 6k will blow your mind) When sony will put out 6K, it will be a 6k downsample from 8K. Overall FX9 beat c500ii on most important camera aspects. better AF, now better Color, better Dynamic range, sharpness, noise reduct, better sensor, ND Filter, Audio I/O, One operator control (this is why everyone loves the FS7), and more. For me, the form factor is not a big deal. The Design is awkward for you I can understand that. but not for me and for most of the people. I can easily balance my camera with a big/small lens and Fx9 is not the heaviest Camera of the market. Yeah you cant use it on gimbale but who use a gimbal on films or commercials today? Yes, FX9 lacks RAW aspect but this is compensated by a huge dynamic range. don't forget that Canon's RAW is very heavy better use XAVC or PRORES you gain 3-5 stops of Dynamic Range and space. FX9 does not think to be a real cinema camera, but a broadcast, video clip, short films, Commercial and Doc Camera. Don't take me wrong. C500MKII is not a bad Camera. Canon needs to improve one thing for me its Camera sensors. Sony is more advanced in this department.
