I have had mine for 4 years now. I really love it. There are only 2 things I don't like about it. 1.) there is no 75ohm cable hook up for your FM roof antenna. Instead it comes with a cheap coiled up wire antenna. 2.) The speaker hook ups in the back should all be Banana plug types. These are really minor. I use mine in a 5.1.2 setup with Klipsch speakers. The sound is awesome. I also like the 4K pass through. All my components go to this receiver and only one HDMI to my 4K TV. I am more than happy with this receiver. Doesn't bother me at all it has no internet access.

@@xuimod at this point it’s better to just route to the TV and use eARC (which this receiver has) TV tech outpaces AVR tech. There’s not much different from a top end receiver from ~2017 to now, besides possibly Dirac on lower end models, eARC, and maybe DTSX Pro

Just watched the review, and I don't know if you'll see this. I have the A80J, and I'm planning on buying this receiver to control the audio. Do you have an HDMI 2.1 compatible TV? I'd personally buy a receiver and let that control the audio, and connect your PS5 directly to the TV. HDMI 2.1 receivers are pretty expensive. I think the cheapest one is $600. Good luck!

The Sony STR-DH790 is a 7.2 receiver meaning you can connect a total of 7 speakers and 2 subs. It sounds like you have 7 speakers and 2 subs, so yes that would work!

I put porch speakers up and hooked them up to the extra ports( back height). How can i have the speakers play only in the porch and not have to have the surround speakers still playing inside the house?

With the STR-DH790 receiver, you'll first need to use the receiver's amp assignment settings to configure those back surround channel outputs to act as "Front B" channels for the outdoor speakers. You can then use the receiver's front panel "Speakers" button to select which speakers are playing. You'll hit the button until the display reads "SPK B" if you only want those porch speakers playing. (outlined on page 46 of the manual). I was going to get the 5.1 receiver but the rep took a few $$ off and I picked up this one instead. What I notice is the "speaker" button will only let me select "off" or " speaker A". It won't acknowledge the A&B speaker options. I am using my Yamaha speakers/wires from 10+ years that I have and works well. I'm sure once I get a sub, I'll be even more impressed with the sound. Wish when using the tuner, it would also use the center channel speaker. Just gotta figure out why it still lags watching bluray.

I have two svs subs and two svs book shelf speakers. Using the 5.1.2 set up. Originally everything worked fine. Until yesterday turned the system on watched youtube tv worked great. Switched to prime video and I get sound through the subs and back ground noise from the bookshelf but no verbal audio?

I have 6 speakers to hook up to my Sony str-dh790. It's going outside for music and also surround sound for the TV. What's the best way to do this? Will I need extra amp to do this? I would like to run all speakers at once. Wiring is in the ceiling and can't get to them anymore.

If you are only connecting a 5.1ch speaker system or less for the main room, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height amp channels as a Speaker B output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Speaker B can be played at the same time of Speaker A, or by itself. Speaker B uses the same volume control and source input as Speaker A. Keep in mind, your speakers will need to have at least a 6-ohm impedance.

A TV is needed to see the on-screen menu system so you can get into the [Sound Effect] - [Equalizer] menu to choose the speakers that you want to adjust the bass and treble levels.

A receiver needs to have zone 2 or speaker B amp channels to allow speakers in other areas to play by themselves when listening to something in stereo. Does your receiver have either of those amp channels?

The Bose Acoustimass module must be used with their Acoustimass speakers. We have not tried using a different subwoofer in the system, but we do anticipate that some of the bass meant for the main channels will be lost if you attempt this setup with a different subwoofer.

This receiver can be used to power in-ceiling speakers that have 6-8 ohm impedance and can work with 90 watts RMS or higher power. As for using speakers outside the ceiling, that will help. Audio sounds its best when the speakers are closer to ear level. The more you can switch from being in-ceiling to heights like those found in floor standing speakers, the better the sound will become. This receiver can also power that type of system as well.

So I plug my Xbox into the receiver into the GAME input, and then the TV HDMI into the eARC OUT from the receiver My Xbox settings tell me that many features are not supported anymore for HDR, 4k 60hz although when my Xbox is plugged into the TV directly all of those features are fine like HDR 4K 60 Hz and games in HDR etc…. We do not have any experience with that system and cannot give an accurate comparison. Typically, the all-in-one box systems focused more on that aspect and less on overall sound quality. This as well as being able to mix/match gear (i.e. choose your favorite speaker brand) and getting a subwoofer to perform to your specific goals are just a few audio differences that would be possible just by starting with a receiver like this Sony model.

I have 8 speaker system...all SONY..... 4 back surround sound speaker at 145 watts each..... 2 Front Bookshelf speakers at 100 watts each.... 1 front speaker at 145 watts … and 1 Floor subwoofer at 115 watts.....for a total of 1040....I am considering adding an amplifier to this system and set up I have. Hi Ronald, sorry to hear your receiver setup isn't going easier. Your best bet is to verify you have the Surround Back/Front Height channels combined with the front A channels for the bi-amp. Hi, I've bought Sony STR-DH790 + 7.1 speakers. I can use 7.1 sound from my TV without problems. And I don't know how to use 7.1 with a PC (Win 11). I thought it's easy - just put 3 RCA from PC to the receiver - but it doesn't work (don't hear anything). I also can't do it through PC - TV - receiver => there is only 2.0 sound, even if I set eARC with in TV output settings. Who knows how to help? Thanks

Klipsch speakers are super efficient and do not need a lot of power to play well. You can connect all floor standing models that can handle at least 90 watts RMS to every channel of this receiver!

Hi Marc, the Sony STR-DH790 has a built-in Bluetooth receiver but, it does not have the Bluetooth transmitter needed to send audio out to your ear buds.

They are using a 24 bit 192kHz DAC in their receivers. This does work well but there are receivers that use brand name DACs too. Do you have a preference on which DAC is being used? Or have preferences on the bit rate being supported by the DAC?

I have a 5.1.2 klipsch set un on this receiver and it works great, but when I play Xbox 1 all speakers are not running at the same time, would you happen to know as to why that is? Sometimes I get them to work and other times they don't.
