I have owned the Sony STR-DH790 for over a year. Best feature I love is being able to play my music via Bluetooth. Just found this receiver at my local goodwill for $98.00! Grabbed it immediately, seemed odd to have something so new there but all ports work with no issue, just no remote or calibration mic. I programed my harmony remote for the receiver and it is working well. Will integrate atmos speakers soon, but just wanted to say how nice this receiver is. Sound is very clear.

I own two of these recievers and I strongly suggest you contact the manufacturer to get a replacement remote for this model for calibration. I don't use the mic but the very basic on screen menu is complimented strongly by the display menu of the reciever itself and navigating is much easier with remote. Make sure you enable the hdmi as your input to enable full bandwidth to your channels or you won't be getting the real sound this unit can produce. Good luck

Dude so glad a saw this video I was hesitant on pulling the plug on the $899 deal, had it in my cart several times and never got around to complete the transaction. Then saw them for $799 and decided to to buy them and match them with my Sony STR DH790 I bought 3 months prior. So I replaced my 6.1 Bose Accustimass with these Klipsch and boy I’m glad I did. These are amazing and go perfect with the Klipsch R-12 Subwoofer, that I got on sale for $149 at Costo as well. I got this exact set up per your recommendation. One of the satellites acquired a buzzing sound after a week when it hit a certain frequency. Wrote to Klipsch and they said "the Sony STR-DH790 outputs 145W per channel at 6 ohms, which translates to roughly 108W per channel when driving an 8 ohm speaker. The satellites in the Reference Theater Pack are only rated at 50W continuous, so they are being overdriven by a significant amount. We generally recommend staying within + or - 20% of the rated power handling, so a max of 60W on these in particular." Thankfully they are sending me another satellite for free but they also told me not to crank my sound too loud which I don't anyway but would be nice to know in future. Buyer beware.

I now Have phenomenal sound thanks to you, I pretty much got every bit of discount that you talked about in the video, with speaker wires + tools everything included this cost me a little over $750 over the holidays, I have to say for the space I have, speakers completely fill the space up with sound, and it's so loud and powerful that I often wonder why my neighbors aren't complaining. A few things buyers should be aware of is that the sony str-dh790 can't be controlled via an app or anything, in fact it can't be connected to the internet for software updates etc, and a lot of configuration is buried deep inside the AMP menu on the receiver so it's a bit difficult to get to and configure properly, in hindsight I would have gone with a DN1080, which pretty much covers the gap, but I have figured out and learned a lot about this stuff that I don't need that upgrade anymore. Also, the Journey to Atmos Audio is not easy, it takes some time to understand what's going on. So be patient and stick to it.

Now I need to buckle down and find the bookshelf speakers for my front left and right channel and finally find a receiver (between Covid and bills getting a decent receiver has alluded me thus far).

Could you make a 5.1.4 by going with 2 sets of the R-41M for the L/R front and rears, keeping the center, using the 4 satellites as the overheads, and the Denon AVR-X3700H 9.2-receiver? I feel the Denon is more future-proof and I could upgrade the speakers down the road.

Hey Ealan, did you ever review the Klipsch Reference Cinema? I enjoyed your unboxing video of it. I've got the Sony DH790 and just picked up the Reference Cinema version of the HTIB speakers from Klipsch. I got it open box for $250. I think it was a good deal but hoping I didn't make a mistake. It should get here next week. Considering I'm coming from a 5.1 system that consists of Dayton b652 airs and a monoprice 8-in sub, I think it'll be a decent upgrade. And it doesn't break the bank.

Great video and very informative. Is the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack 5.1 that you mention Dolby Atmos compatible? I don't see it referenced anywhere on the specs or manual. Another set of more expensive Klipsch speakers does mention Dolby Atmos. Am I missing something or does it even matter? Thanks!
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
Great question! It doesn't really matter which speakers you use, it matters how many. You need at least 7 speakers for a Dolby Atmos system. The Reference theater pack comes with 5 speakers and a sub, so that's not considered a Dolby Atmos-ready setup, numbers-wise. That's why in this video I suggest getting the R-41M bookshelf speakers ALSO, since that will give you a total of 7 speakers, which you can then use in a Dolby Atmos speaker configuration, as long as you get an AV receiver that can decode Dolby Atmos.

hello could you help me with this question, I bought the Klipsch R-41M 50W(pair) and the center R-52C 100W, and I have for the surround the pack 5.1 reference. I wanted to buy a YAMAHA tsr-700 receiver but its output is 100w per channel, I have read on the internet that it is better that the receiver has more power than the speakers, but the center R-52C needs 100w, it is not bad that the receiver only has 100w or there will be no problem?
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
You’ll be just fine, actually. It’s rated to be 100 watts when 2 channels are driven at once. But in a home theater setting, with all 7 channels playing simultaneously, it’s more like 60 watts per channel? That TSR-700 will work great with those speakers. 👍 The 100w rating just means it can handle 100w continuously, which is nice, since that means it won’t come close to blowing out those speakers, especially since the R-52c can handle a spike of up to 400w and still be okay. Lastly, it’s good to know that the R-52c can be used with any upgrades you make in the future, like maybe if you want to power your front 3 speakers with an external amp. That R-52c will still be able to handle that power, too.

Hooked up everything except the 2 spare speakers from the theater pack. I can't get the feel. Especially the center channel is overshadowed by r41m. Any suggestion dolbydoc?
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
Haha, thanks for the compliments! And yeah...getting that balance is an art form, since room space, furniture and ceilings are all different for everyone. For starters, make sure that sub is set to 120 Hz crossover, so makes up for what the little Theater Pack speakers can’t do. I’m not positive, since I don’t own the s750h, but I’m pretty sure you can also set the crossover frequencies for each individual speaker. So even though the r-41m’s frequency response can go lower than 110Hz, set the crossover to 120Hz so they match what the Theater Pack satellites can output. And also, it’ll take a couple weeks to “break in” the speakers in any given space. I wasn’t all too impressed either when first hooked up. Then down the road, it just dawned on me, “Hey...these sound better.” 😄 In the end, these are still budget speakers. So they’re not the best of the best. But I still think they’re the best for the price, compared to other systems in its class. 👍

16 gauge wire works great too.
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
True! Although one thing to remember, the longer you need to make your speaker wire runs, the thicker (lower) the gauge needs to be. Since I run my wires through my attic, some runs are 50+ feet, so I used 14 gauge, since it’s the thickest the Theater Pack speakers can handle. If your speaker runs only need anything up to 50 feet? 16 gauge should be fine. 👍

Hey Ealan, between the Denon AVR-S750H or the Sony DN1080, which one would you recommend? Also, regarding speakers and their sound quality to go with the Sony DN1080, would you recommend the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack with the R-41M Bookshelf Speakers, or the Sony Complete Speaker System (with SSCS3, SSCS5, SSCS8, SACS9, and SS-CSE speakers)? Thank you!!
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
Sony tends to be a more musical receiver than the Denon typically, so if you want the versatility of good home theater and music listening experience, go with Sony. And that Sony complete speaker system is def more expensive than the Klipsch Theater Pack, but it gives you those Atmos upward-firing speakers. So if you can afford it, go for it! 👍 The Denon is still a great receiver tho.

@@ealanosborne Thank you again for replying! It seems that all the Sony System Speakers are on sale in Bestbuy for a total of $550 for all those speakers (Two SSCS3, SSCS5, SSCS8, SACS9, and SS-CSE). However, if the sound quality of those Klipsch are better than the Sony System, I'd go for it.. although it seems that the Sony would sound better since the speakers are bigger lol

At what position to you personally recommend mounting the height channels, if using the Klipsch satellite speakers? Should I put them up front near/on the ceiling or should I move them back, overhead and a few feet in front of the couch position? It would seem to me that if you put them up by the TV on the ceiling the Atmos effect would be less pronounced than if it were closer to the listener and more above their head. Both positions are possible for me, but I am undecided which would be best.
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Well, mounting them above the TV near the ceiling gives you the “Wall of Sound,” which does this really cool effect that makes your TV seem gigantic. But yes, for a more significant spatial effect, mounting them on the ceiling is best, pointed down towards your couch. 👍
@PhoggHawk3 жыл бұрын
Great! Thanks for the reply! I am actually using a projector screen instead of a TV and the screen hangs from the ceiling about 2.5 feet from the wall (there's a basement window on the wall). If I were to put the height speakers in the upper corner this would be behind the screen. I do not have an acoustically transparent screen so it may slightly reflect the sound back onto the wall. Unfortunately my front L/R channels will be slightly behind the screen on bookshelves. While the speakers are physically positioned slightly to the right and left of the screen back there, they are pointed at the couch directly in front of the screen so there may also be a slight sound deflection. I'll have to see how it goes. Do you think if I mounted the height channels back there it would be an issue? I'm digging that Wall of Sound concept! The center channel will be under the screen so that's no issue. I just ordered my gear and it's on the way. I just have a soundbar for the time being so I'm pretty excited about the upgrade!
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
@@PhoggHawk Oh I see, now that you've described your setup. But yes, it would cause some issues if the height channels were behind a non-acoustically transparent projector screen, given that most of what comes out of the height channels are mid to high frequencies, which are very directional, meaning they need to be pointed right at the listening position to be heard the best. Subwoofers can go anywhere, since they are both heard AND felt

If you like your music just as much as the TV, I strongly recommend considering the Sony over Denon especially when playing music! ( 2-channel ) Sony receivers have a far more richer sound as opposed to Denon receivers also when listening to music Sony receivers has more clarity at low volume then to Denon receivers do! With denon receivers one tends here the components, Transformers, processing etc Humming Away in the background! The SONY STR-DN 1080 uses a solid frame and beam chassis for vibration resistance and a lowest sound distortion possible it also uses specially selected components fitted with es grade solder for class-leading sound quality, the Sony STR 1080 7.2 receiver is a more expensive model then the DH790. But hey I've auditioned this very receiver as well as 2 Denon receivers (denon 9.2 3600h plus denon 9.2 6500h) I am writing this comment because I should have heeded these words myself.... How is your center speaker holding up against R-41M? I'm thinking about doing the exact same thing but I've heard that the home theater system set was lacking in mid range. I was wondering if adding the R-41M helped or it overpowered the center speaker now. Also, my setup is for a small living room. Thanks for your help in advance!
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
I actually don’t personally have this setup. I was merely giving an example of how to make a complete Dolby Atmos setup from scratch. BUT...it is a great question. Since the R-41M speakers’ frequency response goes down to 68Hz, it can reproduce much better in the midrange. But the Sony receiver does allow you to set the crossover frequency for each speaker. So even tho the R-41M can handle down to 68Hz, if you’re concerned about them overpowering the center speaker, set the crossover frequency to 110 Hz, to give all the speakers a more balanced output. The subwoofer can then handle all the frequencies below 110Hz. 👍 Just an idea. Or just experiment with which crossover frequency makes the system sound the best. Your home theater should sound however you like it best. 🙌

Take a look for the Yamaha Rx-V6A, Video at 4K 120hz and 8k 60hz, 7.1, Dolby Atmos and DTS X. But unfortunately PS5 Games does not work with Dolby or DTS technology (that sucks)... it only works for movies in blue ray disc in your PS5...
