We review the Sony VPL-VW270ES native 4K projector which is also marketed as the VPL-VW295ES in the USA.
Features include SXRD panel technology with true 4K (4096x2160) resolution, Reality Creation video processing engine, TRILUMINOS colours, HDR10 & HLG compatibility, and motorised lens zoom and shift.
Upgrades over last year's VPL-VW260ES (or VPL-VW285ES in the States) include two full-bandwidth 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 inputs for 4K/60p support and 4K Motionflow.
Many thanks to Richer Sounds Manchester for sponsoring this video. If you're thinking about buying a new projector, even if it's not the Sony VW270, please support this channel by considering buying from them. Call 0333 900 0086, mention HDTVTest, and you'll receive great price and service.

I am of the thinking as resolutions go up, display sizes should too. Otherwise you get people buying 55 inch 4k TVs sitting 10 feet away and cant tell the difference. I believe projectors are the future and this bad boy will be the first projector I buy. Sitting 11 feet away from the wall I need a 110 inch to get the thx recommendation viewing angle and it passes the 90 inches you need to even see the difference.

I'm beginning to think that posterisation is a feature or limitation of all SXRD projectors from Sony. It happens on my 40ES too and now you confirmed it happens on 270ES and 570ES... maybe the SXRD panels inside are only 8bit or something, and Sony just doesn't want to admit it. To me it looks like colour gradients are like what you see when there is only 6-bit colour ability on panels.

Hey Vincent great reviews as always - my question is: I have a JVC X790r (4k pixel shifter) with my xbox one x as my 4k blu ray player. The new panasonic 4k blu ray players have the adjustable settings to help with HDR on projectors. I talked to a local retailer who was of the opinion that I should not buy the panasonic because it is much better to allow the projector to do the tone mapping - your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

@@vismantasbagdonas4699 the only difference between N5 and N7 is native contrast, which, on N7 is significantly higher, but you need a dark room to take advantage of that. Again, something was wrong there, either from source or the projector was faulty.

Ive had this unit for a while now. I love is so far. although movies look fine, to me this is a projector for gamers. reality creation brings out detail and the input lag very respectable. my biggest problem with this projector is it may not be bright enough for a screen beyond 100" or an ALR screen. If you do zero gaming, and on a budget, you might be better off with a last gen jvc. It will be brighter, cheaper, and better contrast. Bro, can you explain to me why UHD Blu Ray movies look so dark?? I just bought this Big Lebowski 4kBR, and regular blu ray looks fine - colors being bright and so on. But 4kUHD blu ray is so dark, its like tvs backlight been turned down ( even tho it wasn't)/ Like am looking in a dark cave. I get that HDR is not about making everything brighter + all this talk about deeper blacks, but maaan, wtf? i feel my eye sight being diminished watching this picture. Is it just me or what? I have a number of films on both 4kUHD and regular BluRay format, and in all cases regular blu ray is brighter/
@MyReviews_karkan
@MyReviews_karkan 5 жыл бұрын
VOLT14 that all depends on how many nits the movie was mastered to and the peak brightness of your tv. If you have a movie that was mastered to, let’s say, 4 thousand nits and your tv is one of those cheaper 4K “HDR” TVs with a peak brightness of 400 nits, then your movie would look very dark because it can’t reach a good level of the brightness the movie was mastered to. Try a Samsung Q9 or a Sony Z9 or an OLED (Oled can handle bright mastered movies even with its lower brightness because of the individual pixels being able to turn on and off individually, the issue is on dim lcd led TVs) and you’ll see how the details show no problem. Even though the oled would still look darker, but it would still give very good details. Hope that explains it.

@@VOLT14 I have the same TV and it is only dark on HDR and I'm fine with it because I know my TV isnt able to pull that high brightness. @MyReviews_karkan
@MyReviews_karkan 5 жыл бұрын
@@VOLT14 read the article Vincent put the link for. increased luminance range is a major thing. Led TVs try so hard to dim the dark areas of the HDR movie and brighten up the bright areas without blowing out the details (but have not enough brightness to do so) which results in a dim movie. I guarantee you that if you watch an hdr movie on a samaung Q9 or a Z9D Sony you won't experience that dimness. I've seen it with my own eyes.

Native 4k alone won't make this projector a good value. HDR performance is disappointing, potential banding is unacceptable for the price, contrast performance etc are should be better for 5000.... Epson TW9400 (hopefully you will review this one too) is almost half of this price and almost can match this picture quality. Not to mention what JVC can offer now with the X7900 with the reduced price. Picture quality is more important than the resolution alone, this Sony would be a much better deal for 3500-4000 euros
@hdtvtest
@hdtvtest 5 жыл бұрын
Besides native 4K resolution, the Sony VW270 also offers excellent picture quality attributes of deep blacks (second only to the JVCs), highly accurate colours after calibration, superb motion handling and low input lag. "Disappointing" HDR performance: If you judge it by TV standards, even the £35,000 JVC Z1 delivers "disappointing" HDR. 4K HDR game banding: yes, we will feed this back to Sony, and hope it's just something wrong with our setup. Re Epson TW9400: we can't speculate on a projector without having tested it ourselves. Re JVC X7900: That's a one-year-old model that's not true 4K, with a retail price above £6000 at launch. Just like TVs, there is no perfect projector... every one has its own pros and cons. It's always easy to take pot shots at our reviews if you have not seen the projector(s) yourselves, especially if you're just going by what other people say. We always try to be fair and honest in our reviews, but thanks for your feedback.
@unknownuser0006
@unknownuser0006 5 жыл бұрын
@@hdtvtest It was not against your review or the projector, of course it's a good projector but this is now the 5th (?) gen 4k Sony projector, first was like 5 years ago and you would expect such a projector under 4000 by now, 5000 is a little bit steep for what it can offer, the 4K "tax" is too much, if someone can have 5000 then can have 6000 for projector too and the JVC N5 has more to offer than this Sony. I meant the HDR performance against others, Sony at this point should have similar Tone Mapping option like the JVC N series. And to quote you: " I would always choose contrast, colors over purely resolution", also you always choose by the current price, so the reduced price matters for the X7900 (although many stores still have the old price). So the e-shift models with better HDR performance and contrast for a cheaper price are better value. Sorry if my original post seemed like an attack, it wasn't, I'm one of the earliest subscriber here and fan of the website since 2007, I wasn't attacking you :)

@@hdtvtest Hey Vincent, what's the shortest distance recommended for projecting this model onto a 100" screen with a 2.35:1 cinema scope ? I'm wondering if 9 feet would be okay without a messy picture, thanks in advance👍
