Very honnest review , but the true 4k resolution make it one of the best gaming projector , it is so sharp and you can turn the hdr off if i remember , it will remove the banding issue, but im not 100% sure of it. Great chanelle im subbing.

i"have exchanged mine for a JVC 590r, gain in contrast , but ive lost so much resolution (sharpness) especially in game you see a lot of difference, not much for movies . Im waiting for CEDIA 2018 to see if Sony will lunch a new model that support 18gbps if not i might exchange it back to the sony i miss the sharpness of the 4k resolution.

Hey RAF, ok so you were very excited about the UHD65 (everyone affirms it has stellar picture, sharpness, colour and very good blacks). Being higher native rez than the other 1080P x4 pixel shifters which achieve 4 million pixels, the UHD65 achieves 8.3 million. Granted that is still less than the 8.8 million of the True 4K Sony, but still very impressive. The “TV Specialsts” on You Tube have done multiple side by side comparisons of the UHD65 vs other 4K, including the Sony 365ES which retails for $7900. They agreed the Sony had deeper blacks and in some instances better colour, but were amazed at how well the UHD65 held its own against a Projo that costs more than $5K more. I realize you said you were able to get the Sony 285ES for a really good deal. Though no doubt still considerably more than the UHD65. So my question is this; IF someone was to pay full price for the Sony, is the difference in picture quality actually a $3K difference? Meaning even if the Sony is better, is it THAT much better to justify such a higher price point? Luv to hear your answer. I am looking hard at the UHD65 and while I can afford the Sony if I so chose, I have difficulty accepting it’s THAT much better to justify such a vast difference in price. If it were $500 difference? Ok. But $3000?

melodicplayer Great question. It comes down for me. I felt like I "cheated" when I settled for the UHD65 to get 4K. I always knew In the back of my mind that It Isn't a true 4K Image. If your a gamer, the UHD65 Is better for the 4K 60hz HDR. If not I feel the Sony wins In picture quality, for better HDR performance, color, blacks, motion handleing, better picture and lens control and no rainbow effects. Three year warranty Included. Yes worth the difference. 👍🏽😊

I disagree wholeheartedly. I've compared your 285ES 4K demo video to your UHD65 demo and I counted at least 4 different scenes where the Optoma had a better, more natural picture than the Sony! The Sony did have some scenes where it was brighter and more saturated than the Optoma but for a 3k increase in price it should been far better in EVERY scene. Some of the scenes were over saturated (especially during the frog in the rain forest scene) and looked absolutely natural on the Optoma. As TV Specialists have noted, all projectors will excel in some scenes in a given picture and not so well in other scenes (even within the same picture). So for an extra $3000.00 I think you've been had. And your argument regarding true 4K again doesn't hold up (in actual movie viewing) but on paper. The human eye couldn't care less since it's resolving both UHD and "true" 4K as pure sharpness. I agree with Melodicplayer, for $500 extra maybe, but $3000+ that borderlines obsession over specs.

I did see this projector in action at a showroom. I have to say, it was impressive. I think I'll be purchasing the model above this one (385ES) for better contrast, and the other features the 285 lacks. Can you tell the distance between your projector and your 135" screen? By the way, congrats on your new "NATIVE 4K " projector.

Hey Raf, happy for you with the true native 4K hope you're still overjoyed with it. Just found something on ebay to change my plans for my cinema a little at least for a year or so. Found a brand new 120" fixed aluminum frame screen for $99.99. So, with that gonna put off the triple tower front setup and audio transparent screen for a while go with equipment on hand and use professional screen. Amazed to find it at half the lowest price I've seen anywhere. This should make it go easier and faster now. What do you think of my bargain hunting skills son........ I'm stoked. hee hee hee ha ha

I"m almost scared to get started with the actual setup of the cinema. I'm running out of things to "have to get before I start" so now I guess I gotta start cleaning out the spare bedroom/junk storage room to use it for my cinema. With the current plan the only procrastination item I can think of is getting a couple more rolls of mesh insulation cover tubing for the speaker wires to make them tougher and look cooler. and seating.

The HDMI limitation is why I passed on this projector and went with a JVC X790. I demoed the Sony at Bestbuy and I liked it it but ultimately decided to give up some resolution because I didn’t want the banding.

THE RAFCAVE - Thanks for the reply. Very much appreciated. Yes it is very hard, and after watching your video it makes it even more painful 😂 Hmmm! Interesting information about the screen. I find that funny because I’ve been looking into Elite Screens but I’ve been told by several screen dealers that Elite Screens are not suited for true 4K and I won’t get as good a picture as I would with one of the more expensive brands, like SI ,StewartScreen or even Da-Lite. Guess they’re just trying to sucker me into spending more 💵 You’ve just made my decision a whole lot easier. Thank you again 👍🏾😊

Hey Raf, i just picked up this projector & it should be here on Friday, i was super stoked after watching your videos until i realized the 13.5gbps limitation, have you ran into any issues playing 4k HDR content other than the color banding you showed on your videos from the video game? i do not plan to game but i'm really big into movies & its the main reason i purchased this for my theater room. I bought a 4k tv when they first came out (like 3 years ago) & my current Samsung doesn't support HDR. So for the last year I've been struggling to get 4k HDR content to even play (NVIDIA shield gets by this limitation so i rip my movies & use Plex). I bought 3 different 4k players & returned them all before i realized what was going on. This projector supports HDR but not at 60fps... I'm worried that the appleTv 4k which is so sensitive will have issues. For example, my AppleTV 4k will not play those same 4k HDR movies from my Plex Server (but the NVIDIA shield will). And i've been reading issues with Oppo & the sequence of when items are powered on where it will play the movie in HDR or drop down to 1080. Ive been dealing with this nightmare for almost a year now & i'm worried that i just dropped $5k on this projector & i'm going to have issues all over again... especially when movies are recorded in 60fps. I was hoping this was going to be a long term investment for that kind of money. Is it literally just as simple as dropping the AppleTV down to 24fps for Netflix/Vudu etc... or is it going to be depend on what the show was recorded in? Brandon Culler Hey congrats on the Sony! The banding only shows up on 60fps HDR content. If you set the frame rate to 24hz or fps you won't see It. Or turn hdr off and enjoy 4k 60hz content fine. I don't plan on gaming so movies In 4K HDR 24hz will be fine. For streaming 4K 60hz Hdr content just force 24hz for them. 👌🏽

Hi Raf, What will you prefer 75" Sony 4k TV or Sony VPL VW290ES projector? People are giving me else else advices. I am confused now. People are also suggesting me to go for 4k laser projectors from brands like Optoma. But I am not interested in Pixel shifting stuff. My purpose is to watch movies, no gaming. I am planning to setup movie theater with 7.1 sound system. 110" screen will fit on my wall, not bigger than that. Thanks :) Wishes from India.
