Hey everyone! Important note: I have been able to confirm that engaging VRR does disable local dimming. This is intentional. More on that soon, trust me, LOL. Also, peak brightness measurements with peak luminance set to high were higher but not by a magical amount. Peak specular highlights did come up super bright, though. Lots more to test on this TV, didn’t have time for black frame insertion or input lag tests, for instance. Stay tuned for the next one! Anyone interested in the LG C2 by chance?

Hey Folks! For the last 16 years, we have been using a 60” Pioneer Kuro Elite Plasma TV for client demonstrations. It has been and still is an incredibly color accurate screen! In our business, it’s all about the color rendition and presentation. Off angle viewing is critical. For example, what you see on a 30x40 print, is identical to what’s on screen. This year, we have decided to seriously consider a Sony QD-OLED. Sony has Adobe RGB and P3 profiling. The Pioneer will get a new home for live, broadcast TV sports watching. They're both going to be bad because of the MediaTek chip and Sony's terrible XR motion processing with its BS marketing. I'd get either the LG C1 as its usually pretty easy to find it on sale for $1299 -$1399 for the 50 or 55 inches, if you have the budget you can get the G1 but it'll cost more because its a bigger and brighter panel but does not include a stand as its intended use is to be wall-mounted. LG is the best TV manufacturer right now as I've had two x90j and one x85j and all were problematic and defective. Sony does have the edge in OS as it's easier to manage and is calibrated out of the box which is great but, everything else as a TV for that amount of money is just a bad deal all around. not to mention the number of customers who had to wait for almost 2 years to get VRR on the 2020 models and the 2021 models up till recently just got it like a couple weeks ago. I wouldn't buy from a brand that treats its customers like that.

Some thoughts for future tests: "Gaming" is not the same as "Monitor". For use as a 4k monitor, text quality is vital. My 55 inch x90J has excellent text quality when in Graphics mode. Viewing distance is about 3 feet; normal desktop range. However, the default Cinema and Standard modes produce fuzzy text. Therefore, text quality should be the FIRST test of a TV as a monitor. Refresh rate and latency only matter if the text quality is excellent. I'm concerned that a 65" TV can do it. My 55" TV is terrific, but I'm not sure that larger would work at all for text. It MUST be tested. 43 inches is perhaps optimal for use as a monitor. At 4k, that's like having four 21-inch 1920x1080 displays. The pixel density is perfect. Larger is not necessarily better, because the pixel density decreases.
@billb57322 жыл бұрын
The actual test is simple: 1) Connect monitor to PC. 2) Display text. Wikipedia works well. 3) Is the text perfectly sharp at normal viewing range of about three feet (1 meter)?

That said, Sony needs to stop putting the eARC functionality on one of their two 2.1 ports. Since you saw both in the same room, what did you think of the X95K vs A95K? Other than higher brightness of the Mini-LED, i see the higher BT2020 color of the QD-OLED (90% vs 72%) plus the off-angle viewing as the true advantages. But how good is the X95K color?
@oppa13192 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the lines really begin to blur when you remember that the sony A95K is pushing 1000 nits which is actually pretty damn bright plus the higher nit color which lcd once had an advantage. With the better color spectrum I say the sony A95K wins and is "only" losing out on 500 nits of specular highlights. This was a harder decision when we used to compare a 1400 nit lcd to a 700 nit OLED. It appears dark to dim lighting the A95K is king, medium it is a smaller win with x95K slightly winning out in a bright environment.
@loki762 жыл бұрын
@@oppa1319 Don't forget Caleb tested the nits on the X95K at "medium" peak luminance and "medium" Local diming and "Advanced contrast enhancer" off. At least that is what it showed in the video.. So that 1400 Nits could be 1800 Nits.. The QD-OLED is awesome, I want one.. But there is still "brightness" advantage to something like an X95K and if you are in a lit/light controlled room and NOT total dark room. The X95K is likely to be equally or even better than A95K.. People go nuts about perfect black. But to your eyes the X95K will look just as black in a lit room. It's eye perception.
@loki762 жыл бұрын
QD-OLED wins with the BT2020. But in reality movies are not coded to BT2020, but DCI-P3 color. In HDR it switches to BT2020, but it's still limited to the DCI-P3 color levels. For the most part. The X95K being able to reach much higher peak nits it will make up for it as well. In a darker room QD-OLED is god-mode, even dimly lit room. In a bright room and SDR and even HDR the X95K will rival it and even beat it in some ways.

@@loki76 ok, that's interesting. I haven't heard anyone say this so far.. So, do you still feel the same way after the release and reviews of Samsung S95B? @loki762 жыл бұрын
@@bravedave90 Honestly I do not think the X95K will be able to match the color output. I don't think anything will. Brightness yes the X95K I have a feeling will be hitting pretty high up there. But question is how it will do it with colors and blooming. I have always been an LCD guy or plasma in earlier years. But now with S95B and that it's proven to be so impressive I am going with that TV. I would have gone with A95K Sony version. But I cannot justify that huge price gap. Unless they cut that price difference in half. The QD-OLED still won't be as bright as MiniLED. But in my viewing condition of light controlled room and not bright room I feel the QD-OLED will be enough. Old LG WRGB I don't find is enough, but the QD just have better APL and appearance of brightness and colors. And no doubt pure blacks is awesome. The one thing missing from MiniLED. Still think X95K will look good. But what is a real turn off for me now with that TV that I was initially wanting is the VRR. In 2022 and they have VRR but zero local dimming. I can't justify that and it's price tag.

Hey Caleb - Sony confirmed to me that the Z9K, much like the Z9J will not support local dimming with a raw 8K input. On picture modes where local dimming is activated, it will down sample the signal from 8K to 4K and then process it with their picture algorithm to enable local dimming. So yeah - do you mind calling them out on that once you do do the Z9K video? A lot of Z9J owners feel a bit ripped because it’s advertised as an 8K TV when it naturally can’t play any video content or even take in an external 8K video signal and process it accordingly. I don’t want Z9K owners going through the same thing due to reviewers missing this, or echoing Sony’s misleading marketing statement.

The z8h is easy two levels higher. It es 3times nore Dimmingzones and is round about 800nits brighter, on top it has 5% more colourgammut and higher color volume. The only two adventages is that the x95j has tv-led dolby vision and the xr prozessor, but its not enough to close the gap. You can compare the z8h more with the zj9

For those like me who have several vintage TV series and movies which they often watch but which will likely never be issued on anything better than the DVDs they have, will this OLED-in the 48" size and viewed at least 8 feet away-make their well commercially produced and pressed TV shows and movies look any better than Sony's top model OLED from last year, played on something like my Oppo 95? Also, has anyone used software scalers, like Jinc-built in to JRiver or madVR? If yes, which setting on which scaler made your best DVDs look their best?

So is it the best miniled tv this year? Is blooming a thing of the past? Can sony redeem LCDs this year? Thats what we need to hear
@loki762 жыл бұрын
Blooming is not a thing of the past and no MiniLED has overcome that. Some do a little more than others but then suffer from black crush and highlight dimming.. Like Caleb said, it's a preference thing. Sony doesn't suppress highlights to overly dim the TV to suppress blooming. So a tiny bit will show, more in dark room. In a lit room likely won't see it at all except absolute worst case scenario.

@loki762 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the peak nits might be higher than what you tested? It seems like you kept peak luminance at medium and local dimming was on medium and advanced contrast enhancer was off. In HDR Peak Luminance supposed to be on high/max. Literally what is needed for HDR. Advanced contrast enhancer can be skipped because it could cause clipping. But in order to know the real peak of Nits that one should be on to max as well. If that was the case and you got up to 1400 nits. There could be a lot more with those settings cranked to the max. I am just curious to see how far it can go. I bet the TV can go beyond 1800 Nits, maybe even 2,000 nits in standard with above mentioned settings. So a normal HDR in that is likely 1500 Nits sustained. Also have a feeling you didn't do the zone count because not allowed or it's too touchy with Sony. Because it can't take that long? Just the little white box, dark room and high exposure iso on camera and then count vertical and horizontal. Biggest problem with this TV is the VRR. If I am to get this TV I will have to basically ignore VRR and pretend it doesn't exist. Now I don't know how ugly it will look in VRR, but I have to imagine some local dimming is working even if you cannot change it. Because without it, these types of TVs look pretty horrendous in black level and could be cloudy and milky as well.

Nit nerds want to know the max nits not the "medium peak luminance" nits the rest of the video was a great look into it and has me even more excited. But, I thought that choice was odd & not the best one no buddy buys a super bright led to hey yeah I am going to run this at a lower brightness. Coming from a guy who returned the QN90A amazing brightness no highlights & got the C1 which is amazing for depth & good highlights but no impactful brightness.... hoping this is the perfect in-between. Going to returning the C1 aswell phenomenon picture quality I see why people scream OLED but, just wanting more out it (brightness)
@loki762 жыл бұрын
I agree. Also the local dimming was medium and advanced contrast enhancer was off. If all of them were maxed out. I bet the Nits would peak way higher. Wouldn't be surprised over 1800 nits. Advanced contrast enhancer can brighten up the image a lot. It just would have been fun to see what it can do fully cranked.
@loki762 жыл бұрын
When you were testing the TV and talk about blooming. Did you keep the local dimming at medium setting, which we see that you did when doing the Nits? Sony local dimming on high is best to mitigate blooming. I feel you didn't use optimal settings in this test. Were you in a rush and just skimmed through it?
@sorooshafzali84052 жыл бұрын
Would it be at same price as x95j at launch? It was 3400$ for 75". If it is, it is an OLED price, LG C2 with evo panel and highest ever brightness for an OLED TV is more attractive. The trade off is sound quality but LG C2 is better in all other aspects, from super contrast, to dead dark blacks and 4 x 48 GB HDMI 2.1.

Hey Caleb, I'm a bit confused here regarding some information shared in this video. I'm wondering if perhaps you got your x95k & a95k data crossed or did Sony so a switcheroo at the last min. In the section of Design & Remote you show the front fact of the remote that comes with the tv (model number RMF-TX800u) however then you flip the remote and show a the "Finder" speaker. This option is not on the RX800u but on the RMF-TX900u. This also means the x95k remote does not come with backlit functions either. I just reached out to Sony, of which they confirmed the x95k does not come with a backlit remote, as well as Sony's own KZbin video called "2022 Bravia TV Remotes Product Overview", it lists the only 2022 tv's getting the premium remote is the a90j, a98k & z9k. Also, I do not see a connection bay on the back of my x95k for a Bravia cam and when I go to look at the Bravia Cam for the x95k, it looks to be a usb connection to the back of the tv as just sits ontop of the bezel

I have a Sony X900E too. It is my first modern flat panel TV upgrading from a Sony XBR910 CRT. I use it in my living room which is generally well lit with natural day light, except at night. In some scenarios blooming is an issue. I use it primarily as a gaming display and the blooming is apparent in certain instances, like menus or loading screens. But in game it really cannot be perceived at all. The other short comming is degrading image quality when viewing at an angle. You really need to be eye level, front and center for best viewing. But what the TV presents for overall picture quality is really very good. Motion, colors, contrast, brightness all very good. No banding, even when I look for it.

Less bright, less blooming... When you care enough to watch these TV reviews, you're undoubtedly the type that's going to see blooming and then be constantly distracted by it while watching content. It's literally the only reason I went OLED this time around. I'm sure if I compared my TV side-by-side with one of these, I'd think my picture looks dim by comparison, but in my room, just watching the single TV, I think it looks fantastic... When I watch content on my old Sony 900E 5 years old by now and I don't see ANY blooming when watching a movie or TV show in my lit room. I have a floor lamp on either side of the TV. And blooming isn't perceptible unless in a game menu or overlay of some kind. Blacks look deep.. I only notice it if I am in the room with lights off. So that is the key to the whole thing. If you have a lit up room. Blooming is not really a thing. The black bars are bad on my 900E in a dark room though. They are greyblack.. So with X95K or any MiniLED if the black bars get pretty black in a dark room. That is good enough.. Because watching a normal movie blooming is not much of a thing. Just in small cases. But since I watch any content 90% in a lit room, well it's no problem.

Was just looking at this TV side by side with LG G2 today. It was in a brightly lit Best Buy. To my inexpert eye the X95k compared very favorably. The image really seemed to pop a little more due to brightness. I couldn't detect any blooming. Also the X95K at 85" was $1500 cheaper than the LG G2. The salesperson there was a serious LG fan and tried pointing out that the X95K doesn't support local dimming when VRR is enabled, but I had just read that this was addressed in a firmware update and was now supported. So he switched to "Yeah, but the G2 supports VRR natively!" Like I should care about that? If the Sony support VRR and local dimming with the current firmware that will auto download when I set it up what difference does it make? I do like the slim wall mount style of the G2, but with the picture quality for me being pretty much a wash I'm not convinced that's worth the extra $1500.
