From Wikipedia:
The final section (of Gates of Delirium, Soon), in which the drive of the previous sixteen minutes is replaced by a gentle melody and a lyrical prayer for peace, was released as a U.S. single under the title "Soon" in early 1975.
"Sound Chaser" is a mostly instrumental piece that echoes the then-popular jazz fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever. "To Be Over" features complex, melodic arrangements of guitar and electric sitar (at one point quoting a theme from Tales from Topographic Oceans), and relatively straightforward lyrics.
A special promotional only, white label, "banded for airplay" version of the LP was available to U.S. radio stations in 1974. It has the track "The Gates of Delirium" broken into three segments: the opening vocal section, the instrumental "battle" middle section, and the "Soon" final section, with slight fades between each to aid with on-air segues. This was done to try to increase Relayer's radio exposure, as most radio stations would provide only limited, if any, air time to a 22-minute song. The edit of "Soon" resulting from this treatment was subsequently released as a single in the U.S.
The critical reaction to Relayer, coming after a predecessor that many critics felt was pretentious and long-winded, was mixed. However, it was still a commercial success, with many observers later considering it vastly underrated.
Lyrics:
Soon, oh soon the light,
Pass within and soothe this endless night
And wait here for you,
Our reason to be here.
Soon, oh soon the time,
All we move to gain will reach and calm;
Our heart is open,
Our reason to be here.
Long ago, set into rhyme.
Soon, oh soon the light,
Ours to shape for all time,
Ours the right;
The sun will lead us,
Our reason to be here.
Soon, oh soon the light,
Ours to shape for all time,
Ours the right;
The sun will lead us,
Our reason to be here.

one can't really appreciate this song standing alone...it has so much more to say when you hear it when it was intended to be heard: as the "conclusion" of Gates of Delirium....and as I get older I appreciate Relayer more than I did as a teenager back in the 70's. Seeing Yes in concert (back then) was pure unadulterated surround sound : )

When I listen to Gates (which is still multiple times a week after 45 years), there is something so magical about the gong, which is the transition from the battle to the prayer; that brief moment in time I feel that I am connected, oneness, with all of creation. I have always loved the YES of Jon and Chris and I always will. Their music will stand the test of time as it is with all the great composers of history. YES was the greatest progressive rock band ever. Jon Anderson and Chris Squire created the most amazing music. Jon was the soul of YES! They could never be the same without Jon and Chris together. I had hoped for a reunion but sadly that never happened.

I used to ditch school and play this album over 'n over on the big Grundig stereo set we had. I could crank it up and NO one would ever bother me as I immersed myself in the lush enveloping world of sounds. That was '74... And when YES came to Anaheim Stadium in '76, I had to work. I've kicked myself ever since then for missing that. After work, I drove over to the stadium parking lot and sat on the hood awhile to listen. Today, it's a bit like a prized bottle of wine: I take it out, have some to enjoy it, then carefully put it back so as not to get too used to hearing it. I want it to be special each time. I'm sooo glad my generation produced such remarkable music. I hope younger generations keep it alive long after I'm gone!

That final chord progression at the very end is genius. I'm a fan since probably 1971, and I can't understand how anyone doesn't get Yes. Incredible musicianship (in every iteration), incredible songwriting, influences from classical, fusion and rock, and a fearlessness about what they wrote and played. I don't care about the arguments about the members - everything they did was superb (except Heaven and Earth - their worst record ever.) But not a bad track record for a band who recorded so much. My favorite band ever, in any genre.
