Thanks for another Tori Holub reaction. I'm with you in being awed by her abilities. In this arrangement, the piano opening sounds "Desperado-like." "Desperado" is a song the Carpenters covered in a different way than the Eagles did it, and yet this piano opening is more similar to the Eagles' recording than the Carpenters cover. I don't know what to make of this. For me, by making me think of the Eagles at the beginning, it served as a very quick way to signal that Tori and Chris May were going to do something different than was famously done by Ray Charles. However, the song seems to gather some "soul momentum" by the end. It's a fascinating cover, and I enjoy what they did.

Hi Maria, I wish I knew all the terminology, I learn more every day with this one. There are so many words to describe her voice, I just use magical. Chris May was the producer magician and pianist who put this together. You’ll be experiencing (or have experienced) his piano work again on her “It’s Christmas Time” video which I see is upcoming. I met Chris at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary and got him to sign his book for me. He cowrote the book, Carpenters: The Musical Legacy, with Mike Cidoni Lennox and Richard Carpenter. Richard was also at the 55th and was interviewed by Chris. That video is on Chris’ channel, sadly Mike was ill and couldn’t make the trip, he’s better now. That’s where Tori met Richard, in person. 😊 Wonderful reaction and I’m glad to keep you in awe, I go through this every day. See you on the next one! Joe

Maria, I forgot to tell you. I saw Ray Charles live in 1992. It was at the Comdex Computer Convention, in Vegas. WordPerfect hosted a dinner after the show at a giant ballroom at Caesars Palace. There was a riser stage in the center. After the buffet style dinner Ray was the guest performer. He the Raylettes and the band were up on the stage, I was about 20’ off Ray’s left shoulder with a clear line of sight. When he sang Georgia, I melted. One of the concerts of my life and it was free. We got passes to the event. Still can picture it in my head.

She doesn't attempt to channel Ray Charles here. And while there is a similarity to Karen, it strikes me more as Julie London, or one of the other great female crooners of the 40's and fifties. The very folks who may have influenced Karen. But utimately i think that this is largely Tori.
