I actually loved the mature looks so much! I don’t consider them older or anything negative! First off they look classy, they’re very pretty and elegant. I also feel that if you buy classic like a jumbo that’s expensive and constantly try to make it look younger and too casual, it can almost become tacky. I love the granny looks! In real life people often mistake me for my 10 yr old sons sister so I think it just depends who you are. If I dress in my casual ripped jeans and converse I am immediately looked at as a "teenage" mother or something so for some of us the mature looks work (and is needed!) especially when doing the school run LOL

Eleanor Grant When you're young you can dress in potentially frumpy clothes and look gorgeous. I used to wear old ladyish clothes and they looked kind of ironic and fun. Before you know it you really are older and believe me it's no longer a fun look. 😉

I have this bag and I love it. The medium flap is way too small and the jumbo fits a good amount of stuff. I don’t really think about how I wear it and what outfits I wear it with, because I love it and will want to use it with any outfit. I paid a ton of money for this bag so I’m gonna get the wear out of it regardless of how I look!

Before I owned a black Jumbo, I used to think it looked mature for ladies. But when I tried it on at the boutique wearing a maxi dress, I was swooned! My husband thought no bag in the world made the pairing looked perfect yet effortless. So, I got the bag with GHW in an instant and have been wearing it with dresses or simple preppy outfits. I can never carry the small or medium for its shorter strap for my height and built.

As I am definitely of mature age now the jumbo suits me down to the ground. I find it goes with so much and can be easily dressed up or down. The problem with the smaller sizes is that they hold very little and I have found that the older I get the bigger the list of essentials gets, so my small bags have all had to go over the past 10 years or so. The beauty with the jumbo is that you may have to think carefully about styling it when you are young but it's a bag that will still look great when you are 80, so it really is a bag for life, not just right now.

That’s some very strong opinions u have towards the rock studs w the classics flap. I say as long as the person wearing it is happy in it than go for it. I would recommend to the person asking this question, if you get a colored classic flap if instantly makes if youthful. Also if u already don’t dressed “older” than wearing it w ur current wardrobe won’t look like it. I live in LA and tons of people have it. You can wear it edgy clothing or street wear and it looks very good! Good luck on deciding.

Imo, this is over thinking...ANY chanel bag looks good, jumbo, medium, WOC, own your look and move on. Make sure your clothes are tailored impeccably tweed jacket or otherwise and the look with the bag will be over the moon. I totally disagree - your neck looks amazing in the round collar jacket. I’m 5ft and I own the Chanel Jumbo in patent, I wore it for my 50th with a white beautiful Spring cotton dress. I later looked at pictures and I think it looked overwhelming for my size. I never used it again. Since then I purchased the medium, mini, and several wallets & love the look much more.

Hey Sophie! I'm so glad you mentioned the point of making the bag look like it isn't your own, more like something that has been handed down because the bag is quite "serious" looking. In my humble opinion, this thought process can be applied to any other truly classic bag, for example, the Hermes Kelly and Birkin, the Lady Dior but also the LV Capucines, all in black leather with either gold or silver hardware. I think that the "seriousness" can be mitigated if these "serious" bags were done in a color other than black or nude. By the way, I love your videos, you're so genuine, insightful and personable!

I prefer the maxi to the jumbo - the proportions are better and if you’re going to get a big bag to hold everything, then just get the bigger version. You can fit items in a lot more comfortably. My Maxi is black caviar with silver hardware. I’ve actually wore the jumbo kind of like the Gabrielle bag with one strap around the neck and one on the shoulder - I’m 5’6”. Now that I’m older, I prefer the medium size for a smaller bag. I personally see the maxi and jumbo as more fall winter bags - mainly because they are heavy looking and also the straps are longer to accommodate bulky coats. How can one style the Valentino rockstuds? I’ve got the 100 mm heels and the kitten heels in both the black and neutral colours.

Hello Sophie ! I think that before buying a luxury bag , I would go through my entire wardrobe . I mean if you prefer pastel colours , a Chanel in black would create too much contrast and if you enjoy beige-y nuances , well with a Chanel in nude the overall look would be a little bit dull. The Chanel classic flap ( no matter in which size ) is elegant in a very minimalist way . I would rather choose it in dark green or blue or grey to style it better ( dress up or down) with my own wardrobe . I am one of those persons who dont' like black and beige . I like your tips . Hi Sophie, hi everyone! I totally get this question. I've had the Chanel Jumbo for little over a year now and I honestly love this bag, even though it is quite heavy. During summer I love wearing it with classic high waisted light blue jeans and an oversized white shirt or a pair of denim shorts and a simple silk shirt. During winter it looks great with leather leggings, chunky boots (love to wear the Balenciaga ceinture ones) and an oversized Acne sweater, like the Raya one. Btw, I scrrrrreamed when you put the bag next to the Louboutins. It's such a 2010 look. 😅

I have the small double flap lambskin quilted black with silver hardware handbag, and I'm 62. It is actually the most expensive bag, because of the size. I had the medium, and didn't like the extra inch on the sides. The small is so ladylike and beautiful for any outing...Ha! If we ever get out of quarantine. Ok...Lovely for tea at home....I am size 2 and 5'4". Personally for me I own the classic Jumbo in red caviar leather with silver hardware and it works as a crossbody bag ... which I love ... for some reason the chain is a bit longer than the Reissue ... it’s size is perfect for me and I don’t feel like I have to dress it up or down. The best compliment I ever got was at a Chanel boutique here in NYC ... I was wearing my jumbo and had placed it on the glass case as I was purchasing another Chanel item. A lady customer walked in and picked up my bag and wanted to buy it ! The Sales Associate was pretty impressed at the condition it was in ... saying she’d be able to sell that bag in a flash. I don’t wear my Chanel’s to please others or to show that I have one ... to this day it is my most versatile bag and I’ve had it now for close to 12 years.

I think that if I wanted to purchase a jumbo, I would go vintage single flap. It just is a cooler vibe then the stiff double flap. I think that the broken in, lambskin with gold hardware in the single flap vintage looks great with jeans and t-shirts.

I also loved the more youthful outfits, especially with the jeans. Great info for anyone thinking of getting the bag or who already owns it. Now that I don't work and I don't have small kids to attend meetings or meet teachers, I find myself dressing more casual. So, I too am having a hard time finding bags that would go with my everyday outfits. The highlight of my week is usually food shopping. So, I have been handing things down to my daughter from when I used to work. But she thinks they are too fancy for her and she has to explain that they were handdowns to her co-workers, so my things makes her uncomfortable in work setting. She just started working this year. I guess when I die they will just throw my stuff out.

In my opinion the larger Chanel classic flap bags are an ‘old lady’ bag and I think the reason is that, once upon a time, you had to be a lady of a certain age to be able to afford it. This only began to change around ten years ago. These days many people wear luxe items as everyday items. It’s as if luxe is the new normal. I personally loved all your older style outfits but probably because I am older, haha. Same with a string of pearls - they are expensive so again, usually bought by the older generation, but they also reflect light back onto the face which is very flattering as you age. You did well with the more youthful outfits, very nice.

In my opinion... this bag is such a statement bag and it can looks cheap really quick so here are my tips: - No textured fabric (knitted, tweed or sequin), any kinds patterns even monogram or bright colors. - No oversized clothing, no ruched, puff, ruffle or frill. Minimal to none button or studded. - No logo brand accessories, color block or eye catching (patent, glitter or embellished) - simple accessories: plain belt, watch or shoes. - wear plain colors, neutral colors, monochromatic or contrasting (neutral) colors. - wear clean cut clothing, plain, simple, minimalist, symmetrical or straight lines, tailored fit or bodycon fit.

The mini and maxi are the most "modern" sizes IMO. The small is OK, though quite safe (which is OK as it will stay relevant). Jumbo feels dated to ME. Esp if it's classic black vs sthg unexpected like tweed.

I say if you like the bag buy it and wear it with whatever you want. That is just way too much thinking and thought process to carrying a handbag. I don’t care if it is Chanel because I personally think that the bag looks old lady anyway. Get dressed, grab the bag, and go. There are days when I carry a ladylike bag with ripped jeans and a Prince t-shirt. Sometimes, I carry my Balenciaga City with black trousers and a blouse. To be honest, I only “match” the bag with my outfit unless I go to church or to an after-five event. I carry whatever bag that I either want to carry that day or what my needs are for the day. Carrying a handbag shouldn’t be this hard. Have FUN and enjoy your purchase.

I think this was sound advice for any timeless classic bag. The juxtaposition of classic with cool,, edgy,,,whatever, is what keeps the look fresh while also elevated. I don’t think it’s a “nay” at all. PS I love Jumbo size-it doesn’t fit everything I normally carry-but it is practical enough to get thru a full day or certainly an event.

Hello Sophie, You might call me a "lurker" because I have followed you for a very long time but hardly ever comment. I really liked this. What I took away from this video was try to make the entire outfit, whether it's dressing up or down the purse or the rest of the clothes, so that the overall vibe of your entire outfit doesn't look so intensely "mature" or "immature/ cheap". It moderates the message and looks more comfortable, thereby being more appealing to others that see it. Great video!

Oh god. How exhausting. Just wear the bag however you see fit. It’s all personal style which people seem to be lacking nowadays. They try too hard to look a certain way and for what? Focus on making yourself happy with the image and person you see in the mirror vs. looking a certain way in front of others. Buy things that make you unique and fit your personal style instead of looking like a run of the mill instagram influencer or a Pinterest photo.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! I got my first Chanel classic flap M/L a couple of months ago and I have been having the same styling dilemma. I am 36 so I don’t want to look older but I also don’t want to pretend I am 18 either. Work- style clothes seemed aging but too casual is too far. The outfit with the coat and sneakers nailed it for me. Overall your suggestions were so polished and youthful and it really put me in the right frame of mind. The video I didn’t realise I needed honestly!

wow. This was a really helpful video. I own a jumbo (with gold chain...) and have been thinking about this problem especially since nowadays small bags are more in. I absolutely love your suggestions and pairings. I will look through my closet to see what I can pair with. I think it would be gorgeous with a big satin shirt or more blousey look under a jacket- leather.. big sleeves, an open neck.plunging Long strings of pearls or other.. above ankle - no skinny jeans!!!- a little kick in the hem, a little flare to feminise the leg. It needs movement in the items you wear with it to bring it alive...:) Or a chain in the waistband to twin to the Chanel strap:) Big sunglasses, hair up- messy bun or slick short:) Big earrings- hoops,drop . Ballet pump or t-bar, my preferred ‘look’ ... white or black satin.

I've been going back and forth on a jumbo or medium for a while and honestly can't choose. I'm also really into smaller bags with long straps to wear just casually on my shoulder hanging down so more recently I've been strongly considering a rectangular mini. Anyway, the issue I have with jumbo vs. medium is, one, that sometimes the jumbo looks too big, especially on my frame, and too casual, while the medium, a better size imo both on me and given how little I typically carry, to me looks more "fancy." Like less everyday, wear out shopping at the mall or Target and more bringing it to a nice dinner. Two, another issue I have, is that the jumbo's strap is really too long to go crossbody or just wear long down on my shoulder, while the medium's works well for the latter but not as well for crossbody because it's not quite long enough, even for a shorty like me. Every time I try these bags on (which is often) I have something to complain about and it makes it harder to pull the trigger. The classic flap is GORGEOUS, my holy grail, but imo honestly kind of difficult, and they're so expensive that for many, having more than one and having options of casual or dressier, etc., is basically not an option. And that's my complaint about the classic flaps... lol.

I agree. I wear the hijab and I find it so difficult to style larger bags because I believe hijab tends to make you look more mature and older. I thankfully have the smaller black chanel flap and it looks quite nice but jumbo would be a lot more difficult for me to style 🧐

I feel that if your style doesn't suit that bag/chanel's vibe and you'd be either dressing outside your comfort zone or feeling that it forces you to look more put together than you believe you usually are, it's not the bag for you. It's not bad that a bag (even a popular/classic one!) doesn't fit your aesthetic. If you're unsure, think of spending money on the item. Do you feel compelled to also buy OTHER things you'll "need" to go get in order to make it "work"? Don't buy it. It's not a bad thing to seek out a bag (perhaps the Boy Bag! It's casual and structured, with larger hardware and a masculine energy that doesn't read matronly) that already works with your lifestyle AND personal style. Don't feel pressured to tick a box with a bag. Find YOUR bag!

I do own large black lamb skin Chanel with gold hardware. I am older. But OMG take a bag which you love and wear it with whatever. If you have to think if a bag makes you look younger or older it’s the wrong bag for you. It’s a bag!! Nothing more. A bag. I love my bags and that’s why I bought them.
