I actually think the resale market is a bit overpriced at the moment too, although I haven't tried to negotiate recently. None of my Chanel flaps have been bought new (I have bought other designs new), partly because I much prefer the single to the double flap which means you have to go pre-loved. But the quality of the 90's is also a world away from the new bags. Love your necklace, Sophie. It looks very elegant on. you.

And this effect of price increase also pushed the prices of vintage, ive seen so many horrible conditioned old chanels selling for a daylight robbery type price... 🤦♀️ the trouble with vintage Chanel is that the old bags are all flattened. The quilting is no longer supple and sad looking. You want your chanel to be puffy

I have seriously gone off Chanel bags at moment, I feel like they want to charge you Hermes prices for medium quality. I bought pre loved vintage Lady Dior in black leather with silver hardware and honestly I love the bargain,I paid 800 for something that would have cost me around 3,000 in shop. It has few marks but nothing that I can't fix or hide and lady I got it from in Paris sent me 2 straps with it. Original, chain and houndstooth twilly for handle that has some marks on it, my purchase felt appreciated. I am getting little obsessed with it.

I think there’s such a gap between the new prices and quality. I’m not a big Hermès fan as I don’t like those kinds of games but their quality is as good as it ever was. That is not true of Chanel or LV in my opinion. I’m more confident saying that for LV than Chanel since I have a Speedy in that I bought 3 years ago and my aunt has one that she bought over 10 years ago. Hers is definitely higher quality. The canvas is thicker, the glazing on the leather is more even and the zipper is smoother. I had been considering my first Chanel bag but I think now I’d rather save a bit more and buy the Hermès Evelyn or Constance.

I’ve owned several Chanel bags; some were bought new and some were preloved. I must say that I’ve been happiest with my preloved bags. Besides the money saved, most of them are in “like new” condition and were in better condition than some of my store bought ones. For the past two years I’ve only bought preloved Chanel bags due to the insane price increase and I just cannot justify buying them new when I can get preloved ones which look as good as new but with significant amount of money saved. Also bear in mind that those bought in store aren’t necessarily new as they might have been sold, used and returned by the customer.

Once fashion houses became part of corporations and the stock market, most lost their exclusivity and ability to focus on craftsmanship - Just not economically sustainable if the bottom line is the bottom line. Supposedly, certain brands like LV and Hermès were exceptions, but things shift in hyper-competitive environments, so I don’t know how they resist.... I am definitely addicted to preloved. You are spot on about the mini bags being more expensive preloved because they are trendy, for now. I don’t go for mini bags because larger ones suit my lifestyle better but due to the mini craze there are some great deals to be had on the larger sizes, which suits me down to the ground as you pay more for them in the stores, so it actually pays to buy preloved right now. There are also some brands that go down dramatically from new to preloved, like Dior and Prada, but then they tend to keep that preloved price for a long time, so it really pays to buy them preloved too as you are unlikely to lose your money in the foreseeable future. I also really enjoy the months, sometimes years, of research and the thrill of the chase in hunting down “my bag.” It’s a much more satisfying experience than just walking into a store and buying something. Plus it’s a great feeling to be giving something old that has a history a new lease of life. And the quality of old bags tends to be noticeably better and the savings can be amazing. If you pay less you can afford to have more and who doesn’t want to have more? There are rules I follow strictly. I live in Australia and we have very strict laws against and penalties for selling fakes, as does Japan. I am confident buying from them but no other countries unless I use one of the big resellers like Fashionphile, and I always get them authenticated no matter where I buy them from. And always use PayPal goods and services, never friends and family or any other form of payment. This offers you protection if something goes wrong.

Hi Sophie! Can you do a video explaining the quality of Chanel bags? We always hear people say the quality is worth the money, but with Chanel bags I’m always shocked about how poor the quality feels. The caviar leather feels like plastic, and for the seasonal bags they use this cheap fabric for the lining that is SHOCKING. I was in love with the Chanel 19, but the lining was this scratchy, fake denim material I could never imagine paying good money for it, let alone US$4,500. Anyway, it would be helpful if you did a deep dive into what we’re paying for. I mean these Chanel bags are so heavy, the chain strap digs into your shoulders, and if you’re petite like me, the chain length for a crossbody is too long. Not to mention that it’s not even real Gold anymore! What are you paying for?!? What a mess! I stick to Celine, Balenciaga and Bottega.

The Lady Dior has signs of use, especially around the opening, but absolutely flawless everywhere else. I actually prefer pre-loved for the LD because the opening has had a chance to 'warm-up' and so its easy for me to put things in and out of the bag. :) I'm now eyeing off some Chanel 2.25 bags as I'm seeing some on the pre-loved market selling for as low as $2500! Sometimes it's because I am looking for a specific color/hardware combination that 's not available right now, but I've also started feeling like I simply don't want to spend as much money on designer handbags anymore. I'm also editing down how many bags I have by selling on TheRealReal (great deals for buyers, not so great for the seller). Whether Hermes is better quality than Chanel is debatable. I find that the leather on H bags wears down much more easily, so I end up not carrying them as much in order to preserve them... which is ridiculous, because why own a beautiful bag if you're rarely going to carry it?!? Great video! I always appreciate your perspective on new vs preloved. I do buy preloved depends on the item. I like a mixture of new and vintage in my handbag collection.

I first got into preloved as it was the only way to buy certain seasonal styles/colors that were no longer available in stores. You do get addicted - I now also regularly check the vintage items. There are great bargains out there but you might have to wait a few months for the right item to come up, especially if you’re picky when it comes to the condition of the item.

I'm a huge lover of pre-loved bags and accessories. My only Gucci and Louis Vuitton bags (one of each) are both pre-loved, bought from reputable resale stores (they're actually a franchise with stores around the country). They both look great, and I love them. A large portion of my designer bags are pre-loved.

As someone new to preloved, when I first purchased second hand off Vestiaire Collective, I never thought to ask the seller about any scents the bag might have. Mine arrived with a smokey cigarette scent even though the bag was described as "basically brand new, hardly ever worn" and there were brown crumbs stuck to the bottom lining of the interior! The care card was also covered in some sticky oil stain which was pretty gross lol. I absolutely detest cigarette smells but luckily was able to remove most of the smell. My first experience was a little off-putting but at least the bag was still in good condition. I'm glad you mentioned something about scents which some first time buyers wouldn't think of!

I am always obsessed with preloved simply because I love a good deal and the ability to negotiate. It's so satisfying to have something that is lower than MSRP. I also like knowing it's a bit worn in and I don't have to fuss with it so much.

The leather alone on vintage bags, in my opinion, is better quality than the leather used on the newer bags. I’ve noticed this with other designers as well. I’m not sure if it’s the actual leather itself or how they’re choosing to treat it during process, but it’s not nearly as solid and buttery.

I love pre-loved, more so on Brands like Fendi, Dior, Bvlgari, Alexander Mcqueen.. basically ones that you can find at 30% or more off their retail price. I usually am looking for specific items from collections that are a few years old, too. It's amazing what pops up in new condition. Definitely addictive. I haven't bought Chanel pre-loved yet but I would like to get a vintage classic flap one day. I've been loving the new items and colors from Chanel but I'm sad to hear about the quality and of course they ask for way too much. It has to be a super special peice to buy new and resellers hike up the prices like crazy!

I buy Chanel in boutique and will continue to buy Chanel for these reasons: 1. I love some of their seasonal classic pieces such as the iridescent ivory classic or the so black coco handle. 2. My SA is the most loving and helpful ever and she always manage to find the pieces i am looking for 3. I am Spanish but China resident so when i visit my family in Barcelona i claim tax free for all my shopping. With this said, i love preloved bags too and i have some, specially brands such as Fendi, Celine, Loewe are worth to search on preloved market but for Chanel i think it depends on the bag you are looking for. For instance, i pre orderedin Chanel the light blue medium large in the cruise collection. Those pieces would be difficult to find preloved for less than retail unless you wait several years and light blue bags are not popular anymore. I agree that NOW jumbos or maxi sre worth it in preloved but in several years mini bags may be over and then those will become more affordable in preloved market.

It seems Chanel has increased their prices to the point many feel if they are going to spend the money, they are better off holding out for Hermes. While I have considered a Chanel Classic Flap or WOC, I am not sure they are worth it for me in the long haul. It's difficult to deny Hermes quality, and I've personally had better customer service while browsing in Hermes vs. Chanel. I possibly could be in the hold out for Hermes camp. I definitely agree Chanel is probably a smarter purchase on the secondhand market. While smaller bags may be more current, it is only a matter of time before larger bags are on trend again. Fashion is cyclical, and with Chanel I'd probably go for a Jumbo Classic Flap if purchasing secondhand.

I have bought all the bags in my small collection preloved except one. For some reason, I feel less anxious using them as they are not new. It takes some of the stress away for me. And I’m not willing to buy them at full price as well. Another great video thanks 😊

I love this video. Thank you for creating content on this topic. Funny, I watched this after I bought my first vintage Chanel 1986 model bag with the large CC 24K gold. They stopped making the 24K around 2008. The vintage bags I’ve seen are so much sturdier. I’ve seen newer/younger preloved Chanel bags that look so bad. 🤗 💕. I’ve purchased both preloved and new. Preloved because the special edition bags are selling at a much affordable price and I try to practice sustainability.

I never thought I would but I have bought two Chanel bags pre-loved now. I’ve had them authenticated and I saved a lot of money. I don’t need the boutique experience and I feel happier knowing how much I saved and that I haven’t ‘validated’ the price increases if that makes sense lol 🤔

Can’t do pre loved... (ATM!) It’s the whole experience of going to the shop & choosing it. I’m a Chanel girl and there are no Chanel shops in Adelaide South Australia. That means, when I travel, buying something from Chanel is a fabulous experience in itself! Each to his own of course, but I would just rather save up and then have the experience in the shop! (I’ve bought four Chanel bags from SAKS on four visits to NY -& I loved every minute of it, I think we had Champagne and it was wonderful!) -the other reason though, is I’m too scared to have it in the post! I live in an apartment in the city (without a godforsaken concierge!!) so having things delivered is a real P.I.T.A! However, never say never, so maybe one day.. .!

I recently came into some money and contemplated buying the small flap bag. But I don't like the current available colours in Australia. Also I would never buy these in Australia due to the high price and lack of tax back; I'd buy it in Europe but current predictions are that we (Aussies) will not be able to travel to the US and UK until 2022 because of covid. We have low covid rates and the rates in europe, UK and the US are high and currently we need to apply for permission to leave the country. So I'm gonna push the cash into my mortgage...! Beside, I don't dress up anymore and though I go out, I'm always alone and so I don't go anywhere fancy or can dress up so getting a bag that I'll not use seems a bit frivolous. But I was thinking of you when I contemplated Chanel as I know you own a few. I do prefer the older bags and I don't like the big ones as I'm short and don't like a lot of weight!

Such a GREAT TOPIC... i have been buying preloved for years... I’m always the one that’s late to get the item at the store or I was unsure if i really wanted..... most of the time I save hundreds if not thousands on pre-love in great excellent condition, there’s a few time that item is a very popular hot item and I would pay slightly over retail.... I just don’t believe in paying so much over the retail amount.... i love the hunt too

Great video as always! I bought my first preloved luxury bag during lockdown. I decided to go on the hunt for a vintage LV Noe (GM) to refurbish as a project and I scored a bag from 1995 for $400USD that now looks amazing. I have started looking at vintage Fendi and Gucci for my next purchase. In general, I am finding that the quality of vintage bags is superior to current stock and the prices are a (relative) bargain.

Hi Sophie, I’m in NY and stopped watching for a minute to check prices on The Real Real. Some of the Chanels that you show in this video are there, but selling for just $100 less than the retail price! Isn’t that crazy? If I were going to spend around $5000 on a bag, I would buy it retail, as you just said, rather than risk something being wrong with it to save only $100.

I love your videos Sophie! Always lovely & engaging ;) Your necklace is adorable! Did you craft that one yourself as well?! Here's my (more than 2 cents worth) lol on what you discussed......I agree with you that Chanel is getting out of control with pricing in regards to their quality. I've been a seller and buyer on the preloved market for over 20 years and I've worked in luxury retail for brands such as Chanel & YSL. Unless it was a crazy rare bag, I wouldn't DREAM of buying new. I, also like you, LOVE my fast luxury cars and rarely have bought one new as well. One just needs to have great connections and DO THEIR HOMEWORK! I just bought two Chanel Coco Handle bags on the preloved market to test out as they are also returnable!!! A chevron vintage lambskin black small size with the aged gold (no card, etc) $3,500. And the one I had a feeling I would keep as I've been eyeing it for some time, the So Black Mini chevron in caviar, (with card & all accessories, nearly new) $4500. I was not impressed with the first bag, definitely realized I didn't want gold or that leather, but the size is very practical. The so black however was TO DIE FOR!!!! The Caviar literally sparkles on the bag, even though it's not iridescent! And the black hardware gives it such an edge, makes it easier to style & gives a bit more low key effect. I'm fully aware that I paid over retail for that bag, but not by much actually and it literally cannot be bought by any other means but preloved these days. I wouldn't buy the black in the beginning with all the chipping drama, but it seems they have alleviated that problem with the later models. My only cons on the Coco Handle is the short strap that doesn't work cross body for most and frankly, the quality just isn't there even compared to newer bags such as the Trendy. Would I buy another though? Probably as I adore the style, but I will have to see how it holds up & who knows what they will continue to do with top handle styles. I'd recently decided to sell my other Chanel bags (wallet on chain & a vintage clutch with chain) and be very practical with only one Chanel for now as I don't have a very fancy dress up life. I thought the mini coco would make a beautiful evening bag as well. I have other luxury bags and also another top handle that I love in a small (close to the coco handle small) size, the Gucci Bamboo Handle Solid Black Leather Dionysus, so I really wanted to go for the mini cooc handle & I don't regret it! I mostly tend to buy the more classic pieces from the fashion houses. I think they hold in style for longer.

I've never warmed to second hand goods. Something in me resisted it. I'd rather buy new.

I agree I am the same with that I buy my handbags new. I did buy 3 bags second hand in the past and sold all of them literally in 5 months or less because the bags never truly felt like they belonged to me and I couldn’t get over that in my head so for me if I can’t afford to buy a bag directly from the store new I choose to not have the bag at all it’s just not that important to me and not meant to be.
