Honestly I am a little off these luxury brands these days. I used to buy quite a bit, but it's all so mass oriented now with prices that really have gone up to an absurd level; the fun has gone for me. I don't want to stand in line for an hour to be 'lucky' to go in. Luxury really has lost it's luster and has become the object of greedy shareholders.

Preach It!!!!! TRAVEL AND EXPERIENCES #1!!! This has been my thinking for decades. I traded travel for handbags during the pandemic. Back to traveling now!!! The luxury world pricing does not seem to understand that their competition is travel and retirement savings not mortgage and utilities. Also, my safety is MOST important; luxury companies are exposing us to danger because of their new and pre-loved prices. Approximately (not on sale) $300 to $2,000 luxury handbags and especially local Italian bags have great craftsmanship and great leather without the high prices endangering our lives and competing with travel cost. Love that you’re honest about maybe purchasing in the future. Love your for you being you and being a great person. Seeing the world and experience life, Priceless ❤❤❤

Hi Sophie, I think this is my first time commenting! I haven't bought a bag from a high-end brand since about 2019! In 2020 - 2021, I didn't really see a point in buying and I wasn't spending enough time outside to justify adding another expensive bag to my collection. Like you, I have been putting things into perspective and thinking about what else I can do with my money i.e visiting new countries. I also have thought about the amount I have spent on bags and compared it to the costs of my holidays. Recently I went to on a 6-day city break in Europe and flights and accom cost about £300! I find that going on holiday and having enriching experiences like these are a better way to spend my money. Regarding bags, I still have a wish-list and my number 1 bag retails for £1200, but I don't think it will give me the same satisfaction as visiting other countries. Also, the bag I reach for the most these days is my £14.99 Uni Qlo bag so I *cannot* justify spending £1.2k on a bag I'll probably 2-3 times a year. Living in London, I am especially wary of the thieves and being targeted so I do prefer to keep it lowkey a lot of the time.

I’ve definitely slowed down with shopping. The prices are out of control. My last purchase was an Aspinal Midi Mayfair and I love it. People rave about it because it's beautiful but also because it's original and not so easily available in the US. So in a way it's an Hermes / Chanel in the states due to its not immediate and low availability - the very thing said brands do to make their bags more desirable. The scarcity factor always works.

Agreed Sophie! Ridiculously expensive prices to the point of greed, poor quality and boring designs are why I checked out of any new products from luxury brands. I still have bags in amazing condition from the late 90's and early 2000's. All Gucci and Fendi. My vintage Chanel bag ( auth card has date of 89-91) is built like a tank lol. It will last forever! I use them all everday. Luxury brands are so creatively bankrupt that they keep doing bag reissues like the Prada nylon and Dior Saddle bag. Rather buy an original version. And excellent point, I love what I already have and these days, I'm shopping my own closet. 😎

Thank you so much for this very interesting video ❤ What I read several times in "serious" newspapers / articles was that luxury brands actually made more money during covid than ever before - mainly because people did not travel and had more money for other forms of "escapism". I also read that this year, Hermes is the ONLY fashion house that made more money than the previous years - all the others are selling less! The numerous price increases, the fear of theft and the quality issues are the reasons I hear the most often. Take care 💕

I’m at the stage where I couldn’t be bothered with designer luxury anymore (probably because I’m happy with what I already have). Of course there are items I would like at some unknown point in the future, but there are so many other items & experiences that are far more important to me. I didn't mind "wasting" some money on some purses I may not wear too much but now it's like.. mmm no I can go have way more fun with that money because they doubled it all. I love the bag but I almost wish that I had my husband spend that extra money towards a slightly better ring and or another piece of jewelry that I was looking at. But I still love the bag. I think I'm done buying luxury pieces until they slow down on raising prices. For the most part I am content with my designer bag collection. Although I would love to get a medium sized bag into my collection. I have either decent sized bags or small bags/clutches. It would be nice to have something in between. For now though we are planning on saving for a big trip next summer and also we are in the middle of renovation plans for our kitchen. More important things.

Value is only what someone else is willing to pay for something; be it a bag or a house. So, as long as someone is willing to pay the asking price, that is considered its value. Should an item run out of buyers at the asking price however, that value begins to decrease until it is at a price that someone will pay. I think as quality decreases across the "luxury" (or not so luxury anymore) sector, people willing to pay exorbitant prices may dwindle and we may see a growth stall in the market. The Covid period has perpetuated an artificial inflation of this sector which is unsustainable as both service and product quality decline. It will certainly be interesting to observe over the coming months and years, but I am also allocating funds towards experiences now as opposed to bags and other luxury accompaniments to life . Thanks for the video Sophie, your ideas are always so on point and excellent conversation starters!

Hi Sophie, I'm writing to you from NYC. I flew here two days ago for some medical appointments. I love in Georgia (USA). In between appointments, I did some window shopping on/around Madison Avenue where all the very high end shops are: Hermes, Brunello Cuccinelli, Chanel, etc. NO ONE was in those shops (and during the Christmas holidays!) The staff looked so bored. Staff members were either sitting in chairs and on their phones or just staring off into space. I did pop into Hermes and it was full of people, but very few were actually trying on things. The rest seemed to be there just to look. There was a lot of commotion, like a typical old school department store. It didn't feel elevated to be there - more like a circus. Something is amiss for sure , but of course, retailers are not going to disclose that they are hurting for sales.

Though I can't take any extended vacations at this time (due to an aged furry child who I don't want to leave at home), there is the most beautiful Lady Dior that I love so much. However, it costs $10,000!! 😱 As much as I love it, for numerous sentimental reasons, I just cannot justify spending that kind of money. I think that luxury is for the people with too much money, not for the average or even higher middle class. None of those bags are really worth that money, they are just a status simbol, nothing more. Of course, those bags can be beautifully designed, but you can always find a great quality dupes, if you want. I have to admit that I love bags and shoes too much, but I always buy good quality no name or dupes because I love to spend my money on travelling the world, trying nice food and wine, buying a nice vintage art...I do not need to justify myself by walking arround with the 5 to 20 thousend pound bags. They are simply not worth it.

Im also in the same stage with you, Sophie! I feel like there are something more valuable out there, such as building my business, education, traveling and experience! I'm also felt the same for buying luxury bag in the moment and it probably stay like this now, and also felt I already have "the bag" and dent want anything unless the quality and design is worthy. For me, I also think I kind of graduate from Dior but recently very into Burberry for the quality, quilt luxury feel, and the price as well! Nowadays. I felt if I wanted to buy anything that is for that kind of money but in luxury world, I would rather buying watch such as the timeless design of Tank Louis from Cartier or their jewellery. Daks or other classic brand's blazers or coats and some ice quality dress shoes or loafers that can be wear for many year but never go out of the stye.

Interesting video and thoughtful reasons to pause adding more luxury bags. I truly haven’t worn my Chanel bags in a year and have some guilt and plan to take out over the holiday season to some special theater performances and dinners. I always love having them on those occasions. I am in Chicago, IL and our neighborhood has become a refuge for migrants from Venezuela. I am face to face with more poverty and homelessness than ever before and in light of it I feel more comfort carrying a lululemon bum bag , a coach heart bag I recently added in or a plain Jane canvas tote. It’s not so much a fear of theft but a desire to not flaunt wealth to others especially those who are in such need. I think luxury can become a way to mask our own desire to be seen as successful and lately I maybe have wanted my bag to blend in and not be a source of attention. Stay well and stay safe

14:07 mmm what am I doing with my money? Buying groceries and paying my power bill that tripe from last year 😅😂

Couldn't agree more! I've been put off by the lack of quality and price they are charging for these items. I was in Spain on a work trip last year and purchased a few incredible pieces at unbelievable prices. The quality for the bags and shoes was far superior than current luxury items.

Hi Sophie I am actually the same I slowed down buying luxury bags I am glad I am not the only one. I am still buying ready to wear from Sandro and claudie pierlot, especially when they are on sale. Thank you for sharing this video x

I totally agree with you Sophie thanks for sharing. I'm quite possibly selling four of my bags, three of them quite nice quality but honestly don't fit what I need. Have a great day.

Thanks for a very interesting video 🎉 I have sold most of my bags that were only shelf warmers…some of the money I’ve spent on jewelry as the value keeps up. I’m afraid that the market will be flooded with bags and secondhand value will deteriorate I rather enjoy it as jewelry and the rest is invested 😊 Should I buy a bag…Hermes it is 😊

I think we all feel it now.. been there done that. I force myself to scroll through the luxury brands and i want NOTHING. it literally does not excite me anymore. The bags looks repetitive, boring, carried by everyone for the exorbitant price tags which i am not keen to shell out anymore. I am slightly regretting my Van cleef and arpels obsession 😅/collection at some pt. But i am just going to enjoy what I have and i now prefer to buy fine jewellry but from quality non luxury brands❤

Thank you for making this video. It is very true for all you have mentioned. I have stopped buying brand new. I look for prelove because it is more value for the money. The price inceease does not justify the quality. I have used my money for holidays with family, great meals with family and giving back to the community. If I find something worth the money I will buy it. In this fragile times, I feel spending time with loves ones, family, experience is more important.

Wow you’re spot on with luxury bags. I went to Louis Vuitton the other day and couldn’t believe the quality compared to my vintage Louis. Prices are insane and quality is crap! Sophie you will always have the memories from an experience with David 🩷

I totally agree with everything you said, I have always been careful where I shop,I never wanted the jumbo till this year, you wouldn't believe I found a jumbo at amazing price. I feel like I have all I need, before price increase I got a med Lady Dior in the beige colour so like you said I could have an amazing trip. When we get older you have different things to go to,different things for the house,we have a employee al, year round that works on our house,he only works on early homes, mines nog old according to the homes in England, like the wall paint we use we can only buy in U.K. things certainly are not cheap, great video, your home looks beautiful!❤❤❤

I went to Paris with my mom in August. It was a last minute Trip. I've seen people going to Chanel but I went to Pólene for a bucket bag I had on my bucket list for over a year. I had a bucket bag but I wore it out so this trip was perfect and Polene boutiques are pretty nonexistent here in the States anyways and I saved $200 on top of the tax free which was a win win.
@sarizonana11 ай бұрын
on my first trip to Paris I also got myself a “mid range” bag and I put the put the apostrophes because my Zadig bag I got is still quite expensive, especially that most of my bags are in the 200 dollars mark at most so a Zadig moon rock was a luxury for me and I’m really happy with that bag. I don’t know why Zadig is not popular in social media but it’s a pretty nice brand, it’s more an equivalent to Saint Laurent asthetic than the classic luxury brands but I love it. You picked something more sophisticated elegant I want something more glamorous rock. Nice choice with Pólene, I might go with that one if I go back to Paris. Zadig is more cool is more in the lines of Saint Laurent Jackemous and Balenciaga than Celine, LV or Goyard. Polene is more sophisticated and classic more heritage.

Honestly, I don't buy High end bags new anymore. I rarely buy any. After looking at my Health lately I feel that's it's not important to me. I thought I would always be into the bags no matter what, but I guess things change. You can't buy the important things in life. Also, the economy and everything going on in the world changed my mind. THEFT was a huge reason also. I have noticed that I'm much more aware of my surroundings and can't really even enjoy taking my handbags in stores. I feel I need to keep it locked up hidden from the public. People are struggling and would do anything for money. Great video Soph :-) Hugs.

I'm a middle class person who's struggling. I gave up buying luxury bags years ago. Not that I have very much to begin with. I can't travel right now due to health and other reasons. This year I've been buying handmade full grain leather bags from companies I never heard of (until this year) and they remind me of Coach back in the 80s and 90s (except more rustic). I have a low key casual lifestyle so they work out great.

Sophie, i COMPLETELY agree with you. Once you buy a few of these bags... spending that kind of money is beyond stressful and makes me, personally, think what is wrong with me to spend that kind of money on a handbag. Because at the end of the day, it's still a bag. I will say my two Bvlgari serpenti bags and my ysl sunset medium were worth the money for me. Esp the Bvlgari because that looks and feels substantial. I've slowed down massive. I have a good collection, but I've stopped purchasing luxury bags specifically. My dream bag is a very rare version of a chanel 19 but that bag is 7-8k!!! I just can't.... i could take my family on vacation for a long while for that money. An experience that you can't put a price on.

Next bag I buy will be a vintage crocodile from 1940s or 50s ... so gorgeous and well made, you won't see anyone else walking around with same bag, and very economical. I'm uncomfortable using my YSL bag ... fear of theft not to mention a bit ostentatious in these turbulent times. Been a victim of theft this year, so a bit paranoid I guess. Thx Sophie, enjoy your videos very much.
